"I know. That does not mean that they have to be so paranoid." Kae shook her head. "Honestly, I'm probably as safe here as in the Tower, if not moreso because we're out of the city."
"Then all I can tell you is to humor them," Xavier said. "I'm sure they mean well."
"I know they do." Kae sighed. "Well, we'll see how long I can keep coming over and helping out. Although I did promise Bruce I wouldn't do anything with the X-Men for a while."
"He asked that I have you remain behind if a situation arises," Xavier agreed, nodding. "And I agree."
Kae nodded. "After the baby's born and everything's back to some semblance of normal I'll be able to help again," she said quietly. "Although if I vanish for a few months it's because Tony's locked me in the Tower."
Xavier chuckled.
"I would not be surprised," he said. "Although, if you would prefer not to return once you have the child to care for, I will completely understand. You say now that you'll come back, but it's still possible you'll change your mind later." |
"It's possible," Kae allowed. "But we'll see how things go once I've had the child."
Xavier nodded.
"Of course," he said. |
Kae smiled at him. "Thank you. It helps to talk about things with someone who can be more neutral."
Xavier chuckled.
"Yes, Dr. Banner and Anthony can be rather intense, I've heard," he agreed. "Any time you need a neutral party, I have no objections to listening." |
"That's putting it mildly," Kae muttered. "Anyway, I think I'm going to go settle in and get ready for classes tomorrow."
Xavier nodded again and wheeled backwards a bit, out of her way.
"Of course," he said. "I'm sure you're looking forward to getting some rest." |
"Yeah." Kae grinned briefly. "See you in the morning, Professor."
She headed up to her room and texted Bruce, giving him the option of calling her. I'm here safely and settling in, if you still want to talk. |
Bruce had kept his phone close at hand, waiting for her to get in touch somehow.
I'm still awake. Probably will be for a while, so up to you. |
Kae gave in and called him.
"Told you I'd be fine," she said when he picked up. |
"That doesn't mean I won't worry," Bruce said. "But I am glad you're still alright."
"I also know you and Tony asked the professor to keep an eye on me. Which I don't think is necessary, but if it makes you feel better I'll let it slide." Kae settled back on her bed, one arm absently curling over her stomach.
"It does make me feel better knowing Charles is looking out for you," Bruce admitted. He was quiet for a moment. "Are you still feeling alright?"
"I feel fine," Kae assured him. "And I'll be back in four days. You'll be the first person to know if I start feeling off, okay? I promise."
"Alright," Bruce said. "You know I'm going to worry anyway." He was quiet for a moment. "I'm probably not going to sleep tonight, but I want you to try to get some rest, alright?"
"Bruce..." Kae sighed. "Of course I'll get some rest. You too, okay? Don't spend all night in the lab."
"I can't guarantee I'll get any sleep," Bruce said. "And I may or may not be in the lab. But I'll try not to spend all night down there."
"Good. You know what happens with Tony when he goes a few days without sleep, and I'd rather not have any more gamma-influenced fish in the house." Kae grinned.
Bruce snorted. "No kidding," he said. "I'll sleep if I can, but the Other Guy may not let me." He was quiet for a moment. "He didn't want you to go, either. He's restless now. Uneasy. I don't think he likes you and the baby being away from home."
Kae bit her lower lip. Okay, yeah, she hadn't thought of that. "Do you think he knows?" she asked quietly. "About the baby."
