"And we'd be looking for a bomb shelter," Elaine agreed.
"Most definitely. I say we let Steve handle them. He's nigh-on indestructable, and he can't get drunk, so I vote him babysitter."
Elaine couldn't help it, she snickered a little.
"Now, I've been meaning to ask," she said once she'd calmed down again, "and I couldn't ask with them around... It would just be too embarrassing. But... He's blonde and blue-eyed, isn't he?" |
"Um. Yeah, basically. How'd you know that?" Kae blinked.
"I told you my grandfather was a Marine, right?" Elaine asked. "There were some old film reels in the attic, I found them when I was nine. Reels from the war. And there was this one that I know Grandpap liked, because it wasn't dusty or anything, and it turned out to be a Captain America reel. It was in black and white, but you kind of just know what the colors should have been." Her expression turned a bit wistful. "It's a long way back to remember, but... I think I still remember what he looks like. Unless he's changed, but... His voice is the same."
Kae was just quiet for a few moments. "He's probably the same," she said quietly. "Tall, dishy, kind of dark blonde hair, blue eyes... Looks like an all-American ex-football player, or something."
Elaine hummed and nodded. That was pretty much what she could dredge up in her memory.
"Sounds about right," she agreed. "It took me a while to remember. You saw, I was scrambling to figure out where I'd heard his voice before, the first time he came into the library. It took me a week to realize I'd heard it on the old reels." |
"Do you still have the old reels? They might be kind of fun to watch." Kae grinned briefly.
"Grandpap has them," Elaine replied. "I can call and ask for them, though. We'd need the reels and the projector."
"I'm sure we could manage that." Kae shrugged. "It would be interesting. Besides, then I can see him back in the war."
"I'll call my grandfather tomorrow, then," Elaine promised. "I'll ask him."
Kae nodded. "Good enough. We don't have much else to do until tomorrow, or until Tony calls again."
Elaine paused for a moment.
"We can ask Tony if he has video clips of the reels," she said. "Hell, he's practically got the world at his digital fingertips. He might have them somewhere." |
"And if he doesn't, I bet he can find them. That's a good idea." Kae grinned. "Think if I ask nicely he'll go looking for us?"
"No, but I bet if you mention it would be a chance to see Steve in black and white and an old costume, he might," Elaine replied. "And dancing girls, I remember dancing girls in the background."
Kae snorted. "That would probably actually be the best way to get his attention. The dancing girls."
Elaine snorted.
"No kidding," she replied. "Unfortunately, I don't remember what they looked like. Just that they were there. It's kind of fuzzy." |
"Eh, that's okay. I'm sure we could ask Steve. Or Tony would probably be more than happy to do the necessary research."
"I'm sure," Elaine replied. She stretched a bit and sprawled out on the couch. "Go back to stumbling around on your new leg, you should keep practicing. Watch for the dip in the floor by the stairs, there's a loose board there."
"Thanks." Kae huffed and went back to practicing, getting better. Very slowly.
Elaine listened to her for a while longer before getting up and going into the kitchen. She could at least make sandwiches, so Kae didn't have to think about actually cooking for a while.
By the time Elaine was done with the sandwiches, Kae had given up and flopped onto the couch for the moment. She just wanted to rest for a few minutes before she went back to making a fool of herself.
"You're a saint for making food." |
"The sandwiches aren't like tipping over or anything, are they?" Elaine asked as she brought the plate in. "I tried to get them as centered and even as I could."
"No, they're good." Kae smiled. "And... stop. You're at the table now. I know you probably know, but." She shrugged. She couldn't help trying to help out Elaine.
"Thanks," Elaine said as she took one more shuffling step until her legs touched the table. Then she carefully set down the plate. "I'm pretty sure they're ham and cheese. Or turkey. They both smelled about the same."
