"None of that would have done anything..." Elaine said, really thinking. Then she paused. "Wait. You had the TV on in the background. Do you remember hearing something about StarkExpo on the news?"
"I... yes? Kind of?" Kae blinked. "I don't remember what the news report was about, but yes. I do remember hearing something about StarkExpo."
"Maybe that's the connecting detail? We can ask Howard what's going on in regards to that," Elaine said. "I mean, it's a stretch, but maybe I had StarkExpo in the back of my mind and that's what the magic latched on to."
"That could be. We'll ask him at dinner." Kae shrugged. "For now maybe take a nap? I know you're tired, and if you nap now you likely won't get a migraine."
Elaine nodded, though a little reluctant, and settled in. Kae was right, a nap would only help.
Kae didn't leave the room, instead settling down in a chair with a book, just passing the time for now. Even though she wanted to get home as soon as possible, she wanted Elaine to stay safe and healthy the whole time, too.
Elaine slept a little longer and deeper than she really intended, not waking up for a few hours. When she did wake up, she blinked and looked around.
"Sorry," she muttered, "didn't mean to sleep so long." |
"No problem. You needed the rest." Kae smiled a bit. "Although Jarvis came by a bit ago and said dinner would be ready soon, so whenever you're ready to go."
"Great," Elaine said, getting up. She quickly magicked the wrinkles out of her clothes and slipped her shoes back on.
Kae grinned a bit and waited for her to be finished before she headed back towards the dining room so they could get some dinner.
Elaine followed her friend.
"Howard's got taste, at least," she said as she looked around. "Though Tony's still got the whole future-tech thing going for him." |
"Yeah, but he also has a lot more tech, period," Kae said quietly. She nodded to Jarvis as he pulled out two seats for them.
"Mister Stark should be here shortly." |
It took another ten minutes for Howard to appear, and even then he was making notes on a pad of paper and muttering to himself.
"The resemblance," Elaine murmured to Kae. "It's staggering sometimes." |
"So, so clear," Kae murmured back. She was quiet when food was brought in, looking amused when Howard didn't put down the notes immediately. Just like Tony.
Elaine grinned a bit.
"So I had a question," she said to Howard, trying to get his attention. |
Howard blinked at that and looked up from his notes. "Yes?"
"There's this thing that I've been curious about," Elaine said. "An exposition. Anything like that happening around here?"
"Yes, actually. StarkExpo is next week. Why? Curious?" Howard smirked a bit, looking at them both.
"A little bit, yeah," Elaine said, nodding. "A week, that makes sense, the timing is about the same. That must be the common link here."
"Timing is about the same as what? What common link?" Howard narrowed his eyes a bit at her, clearly curious.
"StarkExpo," Elaine said. "In about a week. That sounds about right, I heard an ad about it just before... all of this. It must have still been in the back of my mind when all of this happened."
"Huh. Okay." Howard looked at her for a few moments. "So is that why you were brought to now when you didn't expect it? Because you'd been thinking about StarkExpo?"
"I guess," Elaine said. "I was considering going to the Expo with S-- with my kids." She almost slipped, but caught herself. "And I know Steve was planning to see it, it would have been the first Expo since he was found."
Howard nodded. Well, that meant that he was likely still around, since he started the Expos, so that pleased him enough that he didn't ask anything else for the moment.
"So maybe the idea of the Expo got connected with the idea of the 40s, and here we are," Elaine said. "I just need to figure out how to reverse it."
