Smudge just stared at him innocently before making her way up his arm to his shoulder. Elaine came downstairs a few minutes later and couldn't help but laugh a little at the two.
"Come here, darling," she said to the kitten as she reached up to take her back. |
Steve bent down a little to make it easier for Elaine, shaking his head at the cat.
"She's a mischief maker," he said, rubbing the kitty's ears briefly. |
"I think she learned from the best, all things considered," Elaine replied with a grin, setting the kitten on the couch. "I mean, look at who her playmate at the tower belongs to."
"Very true," Steve said with a little grin. He was still amused and stunned that Loki had adopted a cat. And cared for it very well.
"Are you ready to go?" |
Elaine nodded.
"Ready," she replied. She was cautiously optimistic about how the night would go. |
Steve put an arm around her waist and led the way back out to his bike, settling on it and letting her get behind him.
Elaine got onto the bike and wrapped her arms around his waist, holding on tightly.
"Where are we going?" she asked. |
"Someplace new," Steve said, glancing back at her. "Tony endorsed it. I asked Bruce to look it up and he said it has good reviews." He shrugged a little.
"I'll trust Bruce's word over Tony's," Elaine said. "Tony had a habit of throwing house parties that broke his Malibu mansion, so I don't necessarily trust his taste in clubs."
"That's why I asked Bruce." Steve grinned as he drove over to the club. It was actually fairly low-key, and Steve blinked as he looked at the place.
Elaine paused as well.
"It's not a dance club," she said, surprised. "It's a country club." She was quiet for a second. "I guess I shouldn't be surprised, I'm willing to bet Tony's name is at the top of their VIP list." |
"Probably. Tony said we should be able to get in if we mention him." Steve shrugged and let her get off first, offering her his arm as he walked towards the entrance.
"They'd probably let you in on principle," Elaine teased as she took his arm.
Steve snorted but led the way inside. They only stopped the pair briefly, but they were admitted almost immediately. Steve even liked the music, and he led the way over to the little dance area, where a few couples were already dancing.
"Told you," Elaine teased softly as he led her to the small dance floor. She kept hold of his hand as they picked a spot near one edge of the dance floor. "Nobody just refuses Captain America."
Steve flushed. "Yeah, well, we'll see how they feel after I've tried dancing," he muttered, cautiously putting his hands on her waist.
"You'll be fine," Elaine assured him, putting her hands on his shoulders. "Dancing isn't hard." She grinned. "I'm willing to bet fighting Chitauri is harder."
"That was... Okay, it wasn't easy, but it was familiar." Steve shook his head. "This is slightly terrifying."
"Pretend there's nobody else here," Elaine said as they started dancing. "Just you and me."
That helped Steve to relax some, and he danced a little more easily with her.
"So, happier now?" |
"I am," Elaine said, getting a bit closer to him. "I was afraid that... well, that we wouldn't work out."
Steve nodded. "Yeah. I want this to work," he said quietly, looking down at her earnestly.
"So do I," Elaine replied. She rested her head on his shoulder gently. "I missed you the last few days."
"Missed you too." Steve slid his arms around her, holding her close. "I spent a lot of time in the gym."
"Oh dear," Elaine said, grinning a bit. "How many new punching bags will Tony have to restock?"
