I watched him walk away down the hall, still in bare feet and I wanted to cry. Nate looked up at me and huffed.
"Got a thing for the wolf?" I glared down at him as I dragged him inside. "Pft. It could never happen." I said, letting him sit on the floor as I found a comforter and an extra blanket and lay it in the corner of the room on the floor for him. I helped him to the blanket. "I hate you more than ever now... I just want you to know that" I said as I fixed him a glass of water. Nate remained silent as he sipped the water and sat on the floor. The surgeons just finished cleaning her wound and let her relax on the table. She was still shifted as a wolf. "Shes in too much pain to shift back. Be careful with her." The doctor said as he left the room. Yuffie lay still and looked out the window; it was now very dark outside. |
He sat down beside her, waiting for the surgeon to clear the room before leaning back in the chair. "Why'd you go and do something like that Yuf? Were you trying to kill yourself?" He asked shaking his head. "I mean... You're still just a pup!"
|
Jerry had slipped away after everyone was focused on Nate becoming a wolf. He ran as fast as his feet could carry him out of that place. There were some people cleaning up the mess of a hallway but he manged to slip past them. "Need.... to tel... Ebony.... what they did to him...." he huffed, wondering if he should even go back to her after they abandoned them there to die.
Yuffie took a deep sigh and whimpered, looking to Kale, glassy eyed. For being just a pup, she was fully grown and ready for the next moon. Back in the room, Nate fell asleep. I covered him and got dressed and left the room and crept down the hallway and slipped out into the center courtyard. There was a small bench under a dim light and I sat there, bundled in my coat and scarf and wondered what my future may hold for me. |
He ran a hand through her fur before shaking his head. "The moon will heal you... It always will..." He said quietly standing. He paused looking down at her, "I think she is getting back with that f**ker. Even after what he did..." He shook his head again and scratched behind her ear before turning and walking away while saying "Just rest, I will check up on you again tomorrow."
He walked and stopped catching a whiff of Sophie's shampoo and following it. The hallways were dark and quiet. The pack was mourning after their loss. He stopped when he spotted her there on a bench, but didn't approach her any further. "Why are you out here in the cold?" |
Yuffie seemingly nodded and took a deep sigh and closed her eyes, twitching her ears as she heard the door close as he left.
Out on the bench, I leaned back and pulled my scarf off and ran my cold fingers over my scarred neck. My breath made clouds above me in the cold night. I sniffed, then sneezed, keeping my head back, I closed my eyes slowly, tears falling down my cheeks. |
He finally walked over to her to sit beside her. His warmth making that air around them more bearable. "Soph...?" He asked again, moving to wipe away one of her tears.
|
I felt the bench go down and it creaked a bit from his added weight. His warm hand touched my cheek and I looked over at him.
"Do you hate me...?" I asked him simply. |
He shook his head, unsure if she was serious or not. "Why would I hate you...?" He asked.
|
"Because now I'm stuck with caring for Nate until he turns." I sighed, closing my eyes and bringing my head back to it normal position. "And I have nowhere to go with him but your apartment. Or I can try to get him home, and just.. go back home." I thought a moment, then nodded. "Yeah, I think i'll do that tomorrow, so I dont bother you anymore."
|
"Sophie... you can't be serious..." He stood up in front of her. "Listen to yourself. I can handle Nate, if it means you... if it means you stay here..." He said looking at her. "Don't go back to that hell hole..." He said, before kneeling in front of her.
|
I flinched when he suddenly jumped up and my eyes followed his. I watched him kneel down in front of me and I closed my eyes.
"Maybe.. I can talk to Yuffie tomorrow and ask her if me and Nate can stay in her place and she can stay with you. Its what shed love." I said, smiling at him. "It would be good for both of you" I said, nodding. "I... don't want to be with Nate, but this whole thing... this whole ambush tonight is my fault. Everywhere I go... I only bring pain.." I said, looking away and bringing my hands up to hold my forearms. "Im just.. tired of it." I said quietly. My scarf stay in a ball in my lap and my neck was still exposed to the cold air. |
"I don't want Yuffie as my mate, Soph. I told you this, I'm sure..." He said, "And I don't want you alone with him... Especially these next few months..." He said. "And no one blames you... no one. Ebony would have found her way here no matter what... you can't blame yourself." He said. "Stay... Stay with me."
|
Everything he said was right. It was just hard to believe with I was told all my life that its all my fault. I looked down at him into his pleading eyes and weakly smiled, defeated.
"You win. Ill stay. I'll need someone to protect me from him, especially when the full moon comes around. Speaking of that, doesn't that happen, like, tomorrow night?" I asked him. |
He looked down and nodded, unable to look her in the eye when she asked him about the full moon. "You'll have to stay with Nate tomorrow... I don't want you to get hurt... Especially by me." He said pushing some hair out of her face. "Don't let him touch you though..."
|
"You... can't look at me..." I noticed his gaze averted when I asked. "I don't want to leave your side, I know you won't hurt me.... and Nate.. I don't trust him. Back at home, or walls divided us. In your place, theres not many walls to escape him." I said softly, folding my hands in my lap. I blushed slightly when he pushed my hair from my face.
|
"Our entire pack leaves during a full moon to somewhere remote... So as not to hurt the humans. I can't stay here and I can't allow you to come with... I'm not me when the moon is full. I don't see right and wrong and I don't differentiate between foe and friend. It's dangerous, Sophie..." He said shaking his head.
|
"Everyone is leaving? So me and Nate will be here alone?" I shivered; the cold started to get to me. "I don't like that... so what, everyone goes off to mate wildly or something?" I said with all seriousness.
|
He looked up at her, before taking hold of her arms to warm her up. "... Nate and the Hunters... I can ask if Emily will allow for you to stay in her room... So you don't have to be with him..." He said pushing more hair out of her face. "And no... we don't mate... we kill... mercilessly. That's why we call it the beast." He said with a frown, as if remembering something. "And that's why we are hated."
|
I stared at him as he informed me of this. I couldnt believe they blindly killed people. Maybe his wolf pack did kill Ebonys family... I lowered my eyes.
"I wish you didnt have to go... or go through that..." I touched his cheek gently. "I... how long will you be gone?" |
He shook his head, "We won't be gone long... One night at most. You're a tough one, I think you can manage one night on your own yeah?" He said with a smirk, almost leaning into her hand. Why? Why was he being so gentle with her? Maybe... just maybe humans weren't all bad... Especially her.
|
"Youre right... I'll miss you lots but I'll be okay." I said smiling at him. I noticed he had leaned into my hand, like a dog would have and I just smiled.
"We.." I coughed. "Should get back to your room, eh? Im getting cold" I giggled a bit looking to him shyly. |
He looked at her for a couple of seconds as if debating something, before nodding. "Yeah... You're right..." He said standing up and offering a hand to help her up. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders as they walked back inside to help keep her warm. "Since Nate is going to be sleeping over... he can have my room. You're freezing Soph..." He said as a sidenote.
|
I smiled at him and stood up, nodding. I placed my hand in his and stuffed my scarf in my pocket. He put his arms around my shoulders and I could have melted on the spot. I kept my knees from buckling as we went inside, warmed up and went to sleep. I in his bed, he on the couch and Nate dead asleep on the blanket in the corner of the living room.
Tomorrow would be a long night without him. |
Kale had been the first to wake up, his entire body aching as he hunched over any thing he could throw up in. He was darker today and not completely there. He kept his head down for most of the time, quiet.
There was a knock on the door before Emily opened it. "We will be heading out in a matter of minutes. Did you still want Sophie to stay at my place with Dameon... Or will she be fine here with Nate...?" Kale huffed, before walking off past his Alpha "How would I know..." She shook her head before looking at Sophie. "Forgive him... even he is still new to this life. Are you alright here...?" |
I was in the middle of making breakfast. Nate was still asleep while Kale wasn't much for conversation this morning. I waved to her. She seemed to be pretty together, unlike Kale.
I nodded at her. "I'll be alright, I can fend him off if need be" I smiled. "I hope... everyone stays safe." I said, not really knowing if that was the right thing to say to a pack of angry, blind wolves. |
