Physical Fitness! Get Up Off Your Butt
So as much as we all love Menewsha, I'd hope that you guys don't spend your entire day parked in front of a computer. [:P]
What do you do to stay active? What sports and exercises do you keep up with? Share your routines! What motivates you to work out? I have a lot of fun exercising, so I tend to stay pretty active. I've got a bodyweight routine that I go through each night before bed. I also like to bicycle and kayak during the summer, while I stay inside and do pilates during the icy cold winter. I've tried to get into running for years now, but it's not for me. Running is complete torture! Anyone who actually enjoys it has got to be missing a few screws. [lol] |
I'm too busy to rest, let alone exercise. I have two theses like uni subjects as well as two other subjects including law, as well as a full-time and part-time job as well as other major projects. @[email protected] Also have some health issues where I won't be able to exercise for some time. [illgetu]
The most exercise I get is walking 40 minutes 4 times a week when I walk to class while carrying 20% of my total weight and that wears me out due to some breathing+blood problem I have. If, and when I can, I'd like to get back on the Max Capacity Training Program. Max Capacity Training - 12 Week Bodyweight Workout Plan These things are insanely intense and I could not walk after the first day (granted I walked something like 5km with a heavy bag as well that day). I mostly do it to be healthy rather than to lose weight. |
I ride my bike at least 20 miles a day. 10 miles to work and 10 miles or more back depending on if I have somewhere to go after work or not. If I don't ride my legs get really restless so even on my days off I have to go out and ride. I also walk a lot. I hardly ever drive so if I go somewhere I either bike or walk.

I used to walk for 30 minutes every day. I did this for quite a while, but never saw an ounce of results. I got spotty with it, taking it back up for a month, dropping it for a few, trying again... Never had much luck.
Two weeks ago I started college. My second-to-last class is on one side of the campus, and my last class is clear on the other side. It's not that long of a walk, but it's very brisk and my legs are always sore by the time I get there just for how intense the speed is (and I'm a minute or two late as it is). Already my legs are noticeably more toned. Previously, when I'd be sitting and my legs were relaxed, I could grab a hunk of fat from the back of my calves. Today I discovered that's no longer possible. [:o] So much for the Freshman 15, eh! |
I'm not one into physical fitness unfortunately :( I used to do it a lot more before I injured my back. After that injury working out really hurts it D:
BUT I like to think I'm not a total couch potatoe. In college, I walked everywhere...didn't drive. and after I graduated I've held jobs where I'm on my feet all day. I run a bit and get up and down and up and down. So I'm not, at least, sitting around all day XD |
Pa-chinko - Man, I can empathize with being busy. Grad school absolutely killed any desire I had to exercise or even move out of my chair. That's mainly why I'm so invested in fitness right now: I barely did anything for two years, and now I actually have the opportunity, so I might as well enjoy it! But geez, a 40 minute walk is nothing to scoff at. That's quite a bit work, right there.
Mystic - 20 miles is certainly more than I manage to bike! That's a lot to do in one day, which is awesome. Cherry - Haha, I think that's a pretty common thing for college students. I know that my older brother and I both lost weight during college just because we got used to walking everywhere on campus. You'll get used to it in time and I'm sure that your legs will end up getting a lot stronger. It's one of the many perks of rushing to class. [lol] Maria - Aw, I can see how a back injury would turn into such a problem. That's one part of your body that you really don't want to aggravate any further. But it's good that you're at least walking when you can and getting up to do something. Even just a little bit is better than nothing at all. [:)] |
I wander-walk around.
Walk my dogs, do yoga, free-style dance. Lots of dancing on the kinect ^.^ I'm starting a ballet class on friday. I bike occasionally with my cousin. Sometimes I walk to work -30min walk- rather than get a ride -15 min-; that usually depends on my shift, my familys shifts and if I'm running late. I almost always walk to my boyfriends house after work, which only takes 7 minutes, but I still feel good for doing it. |
haha exactly. and I'm really antsy - I can't sit in the same position for long...I need to get up and move. Just sucks because my back REALLY hurts after working out even a little.
|
Yay ballet! Have you ever danced before, Codette?
|
When I was a kid I took a basic hip hop class. But with all the musicals I watch I really want to learn ballet.
|
I'm not really active right now. But in the next 3-4 weeks I'm hoping to purchase a bike.
And hopefully, I will be a little more active then. |
Oh, I have another thing to add! I signed up for a fencing group at my college. They haven't contacted me yet, but hopefully they will soon and their meetings will be at a time that's convenient for me. I've always wanted to fence, and the group is for people of every skill level, including beginners. [eager]

LOL! I am probably one of those who are almost always glued to the computer because of my lifestyle. I plan to try my best to change that.

Wii sports are a surprisingly good workout. My old roommate had a Wii that I'd use every once in a while. I'd get so into the game that I'd be moving around without any thought to working out, just trying to get a high score. By the next morning, I'd definitely feel it in my muscles!
|
I play competitive badminton to stay active. I am on my university varsity team so it keeps me very busy. Aside from playing badminton we also jog, run, weight train, and skip.
Every day I am doing some sort of physical activity. |
I really want to try to tone myself up a bit with more strength training and stuff like that but haven't gotten around to getting a gym membership again yet. I was working out three times a week and biking but stopped going to the gym because I had no one to go with. Yeah, it's a bad excuse, I know this. [:P]

My workout is a thing that I like to call work :D
I work in a buffet that is in one of the many casinos here in Reno, Nevada. And the buffet itself is on two floors. So I will be running up and down the stairs. I move around a LOT to get things done, and depending on what I'm doing, I will usually rush to get things done and up on time. Aside from running all over the place, I also lift things that are pretty heavy (well, that are "heavy" to most of my co-workers, but isn't that heavy for me). My co-workers keep telling me to drop something that they think is "too heavy" for me when I tell them every time that I have it and they shouldn't be concerned about it lol. But I swear, I get a full body work out each day from work by things that I do just to get the job done lol Aside from that, I walk to and from work. Granted it's only a fifteen minute walk, it's still a little more exercise that I get when I'm not at work lol. Also when my roommate and I move to a better neighborhood and apartment, I plan on getting a bike so that way I can ride my bike places. I prefer riding a bike than walking places anyways ;D, it's more fun and it gets me places faster. I also have tried Zumba before, and that is a really great work out :D |
Look at these new babies!
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...o/Img_6836.jpg Maybe this will be a good incentive to actually give running a try. I got a lightweight pair specifically for biking and hiking, but it seems like all women's sneakers are meant for running. It's weird - Every store I went to had about one aisle's worth of women's athletic shoes (all for running or walking) while they had 5-6 aisles of men's athletic shoes (for everything from soccer to basketball to weight training). And by "weird," I really mean that it was horribly annoying. I've tried zumba before, Laila, and it was pretty fun! Except the only classes I took were some free ones offered at my mother's school. I'd be facing one direction and have my mother in front of me, then turn around to see my old kindergarten teacher. That made it much less fun when the instructor kept yelling out "Make it sexy, ladies! Make it sexy!" Knerd did not want to see them sexy... |
Knerd - Those look like really snazzy running shoes :D, I would try to break them in first before actually running about so that way you don't hurt that bad when you return from a run. I actually just had to break in a pair of brand new pair of work shoes... at work, and damn was that a pretty painful week for my feet Dx, at least they don't hurt me anymore. Though at least they are better than my old steel toed boots that made me slip and fall at work.
I do hope that I can get a bike real soon :D, or something like that. I do have a pair of in-line roller blades sitting in my closet that I haven't actually used in like, years. I used to have a blast with those things, and had quite a few falls due to rocks getting caught in the wheels. Worst... stop... ever... I first tried Zumba when I was in Job Corps and they offered the class every Wednesday evening. I had a hard time keeping up with just the basics that were played before it got more extreme. Though I got the hang of it for awhile, and then my back and shoulder decided to give me extreme hell for awhile, and I wasn't able to dance to Zumba for awhile. And I can't believe that your instructor shouted something like that Dx, I think that I would of walked out of that class right after that. That wouldn't of made the class fun anymore. Though if anyone hasn't tried Zumba before, I would suggest it. You work out pretty much every single part of your body all in one fun and extreme work out. |
The title of this thread makes me think of James Brown's "Get Up Offa That Thing" *dances*
Most of my exercise comes from entertaining my daughter. I want and need to exercise more but I hate it. [lol] I don't have time during the day because of my daughter and by the end of the night I'm exhausted. She started school this week though and I'm going to try nd exercise more. I don't really enjoy running so I don't know what I'll do you yet. I was doing an workouts for awhile because my aunt and uncle made fun of my little beer belly but I wasn't seeing any results so I got discouraged. I've tried yoga a couple of times but I think if I am going to do yoga I'll have to do a class. I heard the other day, though, that my school is opening a little day care center in the building where the gym is where I can drop my daughter off for a few hours and they give me a pager. There's one in our library too. I will probably be utilizing those. |
I walk to my classes holding textbooks.
That's about it. I'm really bad about this kind of stuff. |

The wii fit is great too. Especially the hula hoop one. I always imagine that my waist would get smaller if I do it enough but my back would get painful too fast for me to do anymore than 2 rounds XD |
I was doing Tae Kwon Do twice a week and hitting the gym three days a week during the summer. Now that I'm back in Chicago, I don't have ready access to a gym or a dojo. I'm sure I'll figure something out soon. All this sitting is killing me.
|
To be honest, I am not really active. I want to get rid all of my body fat (except for boobs and butt of course) and make my face lean (no visible fat). So In the near future, I would like to become a vegetarian or fish might as well be part of my diet but not in where I live. Maybe when I move to Connecticut or when I go to college outside ^__^
|
I have a machine out on my apt balcony called a Cardio Slide. Basically it's like a bike except you push forward on the petals while you pull back on the handle. So it works abs, legs and arms. I work out on that 2-3 times a week using an ep of my fav show Being Human as a timer and distraction. I have reached the heaviest notch on it just yesterday.
I have also taken to as weird as it sounds running for little bits at a time around my living room and today I did jumping jacks. |
