"Are you sure?" Henry pressed. "Look, it's something magic, right? Maybe we can go see Grandpa Gold, he can probably figure it out and tell us what to do." He reached for Emma's hand. "Please, Mom."
Emma pulled away from Henry. "No." She wasn't sure why, she couldn't put her finger on the reason, but she knew that going to see Gold was a bad idea. "No, I'm not going to see him. I don't need his help."
"What?" Henry asked, blinking. "Mom, he's been teaching us magic. If this is something out of our league, isn't it best to go to someone who knows more?"
"No," Emma snapped. "Not him." She shook her head. "I'll find someone else."
"Then who else?" Henry pressed. He'd flinched just slightly when she snapped at him, but something was obviously wrong so he tried not to take it personally.
"I'll figure it out." Emma shook her head. "Go on back inside. I need some quiet time."
Which was true, but he was also starting to annoy her, which she knew was wrong, but she couldn't put her finger on why. |
"Promise me you'll find someone to help," Henry said, not backing off just yet. "Please, Mom."
"I will," Emma told him. "I will." She would ask for help... If she needed it. Later. Sometime.
"Promise," Henry pressed. "Please. Whatever it is, just get someone to help you."
"I will," Emma said. "Promise." She watched him, holding herself still, even though the magic was thrumming in her veins, now.
Henry watched her for another moment and then nodded once. He knew that was the best he was going to get. But he also knew he was going to mention it to Gold next time he saw his grandfather.
Emma waited until Henry was gone, and then she moved herself somewhere quieter, farther away from everyone. And then, finally, the darkness took over.
Henry could feel the shift, and it genuinely scared him. Something was really, really wrong with Emma, and there was nothing he could do about it. He was in so far over his head, so he did the only thing he could think of: he went to find his other mom. Regina would know what to do.
Regina had felt something strange and magic, but it wasn't coming closer to anyone yet, so she had so far ignored it.
But she was surprised when Henry showed up. "Henry," she said, smiling at him and walking over. |
"Mom!" Henry went over to her. "Something's wrong. Something happened to Mom. I don't know what, or how, and she won't let me help her."
"Calm down," Regina said, putting her hands on his shoulders. "Explain that again, Henry. Slowly."
"I don't even know how," Henry said, still fidgeting. "I don't know what happened. Something happened to Mom, it's changing her, and she won't tell me what it was or how to help, and I'm worried."
Regina sighed. "Alright," she said, pulling him closer. "Alright, I'll go talk to her. But I want you to stay here, alright?" She gave him a stern look.
"But I can help!" Henry protested, ignoring the stern look. He'd been getting them for years. "I know I can."
"Henry, I need to find out what's going on, first," Regina told him. "I can do that better if I know you're somewhere safe. Whatever's happened to Emma sounds serious, and I want to see for myself first, okay?"
Henry didn't like it, but he nodded.
"Okay," he said. "But don't try to keep me out of it? Please? I want to know what's going on." |
"As soon as I know something, I will tell you," Regina said. "I promise." She touched his cheek. "I'll be back soon, okay?"
"Okay," Henry said, nodding. He gave her a quick hug. "Thanks, Mom."
"You're welcome." Regina returned the hug and then gently propelled him towards the house. Then she turned towards the source of the dark magic she felt and magicked herself there.
Emma sensed Regina arrive.
"What do you want?" she asked, not turning around. |
