You Name It, We Watch It [[New Anime Reviews]]

Revitalize the anime section, you say? Ha! Nope, not a chance...or is there? It's deader than a door nail in here most of the time. I'm thinking it needs something new...so here you have it, an attempt to give it a bit of new life!

Welcome to 'you name it, we watch it' a new/seasonal anime review center of sorts. Want to know whether something that's just cropped up is worth a watch, but don't have the time or energy to invest if it isn't? Ask myself or one of my lovely associates to watch it for you and plunk a review here. Of course, you don't have to take our word for it, we'd love to get input from others. So, if you've seen one of the shows that someone has listed, or you disagree with one of our reviews, feel free to post your own for folks to peruse.

Note: We will not be reviewing anything that aired before 2011. We will, however, rec things that have aired prior to 2011 if you ask us to do so.

Coming soon from Seridano: Sukitte Ii Na Yo, Amnesia, No.6, PSYCHO-PASS

Magi: The Labyrinth of MagicX

Score: 10/10

Meet Magi, Magi is fantasy, action, adventure, romance, comedy, what have you. In short, it's a bundle of everything.

When I first saw the summary for Magi, with it's talk of dungeons, treasure hunting, King candidates, and a grandiose battle against fate I though 'oh, someone is playing with cliches again.' then I watched the first episode, noted that it seemed mostly comedic (and therefore of little interest to me), and briefly wrote it off as being 'pointless crack.' I was wrong. Magi is so much more than it's summary suggests, so much more than the first few episodes reveal. It is a tale of the human capacity for both good and evil, the depth of human love, and of doubt, the strength that it takes to overcome our differences, the lasting effects of subjugation, the whole nine yards. In short, Magi is a fantastical tale that is, at it's heart, a story about what it means to be human, what it's like to search for a path, and a purpose, and understanding, what it means to lead, and what it means to follow. While it takes a few episodes to get going, it is well worth the wait, and it provides a nice blend of comedy and gravity, purity and pain. The characters are believable within the contexts of their world, and their faults, flaws, and strengths are gloriously relate-able, despite the fantastical nature of the world itself.

As a nice secondary feather in Magi's proverbial cap, the length of the battle scenes make sense without being overly drawn out (ala Dragon Ball Z), and the abilities / system of magic that the characters invoke/utilize is both interesting and innovative in it's own way. While it isn't wholly original (nothing is these days), it is well thought out and explained, and manages to lend itself well to the overall story (and overarching themes).

... Magi.

You'll recognize me soon. xD

Seridano 01-16-2013 05:40 PM

Baha, already do. <3

Kleine Robotik 01-17-2013 06:29 PM

I'm actually interested in this. I don't have anything to suggest, but that's precisely why. I never really catch new anime now-a-days like I used to.

I just end up rewatching my classic favorites.

Good luck in your endeavour.

Lol i was about to recommend magi xD
i really fell for it for now<3

HappyStarr 02-03-2013 03:48 AM

I just caught up with Magi (minus one episode, I think?). I'd like to recommend Sword Art Online and Shang-Ri La.

Aoi Kazuya 02-04-2013 12:00 AM

I haven't watched Magi but I see commercials for it. I've been watching Amnesia, which came out earlier this year though.

New anime...

For this year I only know of:

~ Amnesia
~Karneval (This hasn't aired yet)
~ Love Live! School Idol Project
~ UtaPri season 2 (hasn't aired yet)
~ Hetalia The Beautiful World

and...mm... those are the only ones i've really paid any attention to/have heard of for this year so far though i've glimpsed some others, i just don't remember them.

But does that leave anything good? /old snob
But really, I haven't been too in tune with these things the past few years. Because there seemed nothing worth tuning into.

Seridano 05-06-2013 04:43 PM

Biggles - I had the exact same thought when I embarked upon this project. In fact, that's why I decided to give this a whirl. New anime rarely gets the credit it deserves. There are some gems out there and, sure, you have to wade through a lot of crap pandering to the masses to find them, but that doesn't mean that they aren't being released.

First review is up, though it is, admittedly, a bit brief. Will probably bulk it up later. Let me know what you guys think / if there's anything I ought to add.

MinakoAxule 05-07-2013 02:30 PM

I am currious if you can review Sword Art Online. I don't have much time to watch anime and I want to know if it's anywhere as good as .hack//sign which I was an avid watcher of. If it's any good I might add it to my list.

I hope we are allowed to ask for reviews.

Aoi Kazuya 05-08-2013 12:32 AM

Amnesia's been finished for a bit now. i have to say while the art is really nice, i was a bit disappointed by the anime adaptation.

i think i'll just leave it at that since I can see that you'll be reviewing it eventually Seridano?

Seridano 05-09-2013 04:24 PM

@Mina - I plan on giving it a watch with the bf at some point, so a review should crop up eventually (by which I mean: yes, request away!). Anywho, I imagine it'll be tought to keep from comparing it to .hack//sign, since it was one of the first anime's to really grab my attention and keep it. Will let you know wat I think of SAO and how compares to .hack//.

@Aoi - I loved the art, though I was a bit disappointed by the overall story (especially where the ending was concerned). There was one moment that made me feel that everything had come together and been worth it, and then they kept going and essentially undid all of their own hard work. In short: concept - great, execution - meh in most cases. Though, as far as otome game adaptations go, it wasn't terrible. Anywho, review coming soon-ish (once I've stopped being lazy).

Aoi Kazuya 05-12-2013 05:30 PM

I actually had a bit of a rage moment when I realized they only gave Kent one episode, haha. But yea i did think they could have done a better job with the execution. the majority of us just wanted to wring the heroine's neck she was so useless >.> But I can understand with this specific otome game the difficulties they probably had considering the different paths and such. it's very different from the Utapri ones.

it'd be nice to see what they could do if they make a second season...though i really don't know how they would make that work :/

onsenmark 05-13-2013 04:57 PM

Attack on Titan.

Zombie Pixie 05-16-2013 08:09 AM

@Aoi Kazuya

Martel Irasia 05-17-2013 03:13 AM

Hey, hey. I found another thread of yours. xD

I'd like to suggest/request, Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss.
While both of them are based off of their game counterparts, the reason I suggest them to be reviewed is because most people have never even heard of the games, and therefore don't know the anime exists.

Both series are already completed, but they were finished sometime last year. Tales of Symphonia have the most recent ending, only seven or so months ago.

Apart from that, I'm here to stick around... chat. And possibly use this to help me get into some more anime.

Seridano 05-17-2013 03:51 PM

Oh, hey, you changed your name!

Anywho, will toss it on my grand master list (which hasn't been posted here, because holy balls is it long), and get to them as soon as a I can. Might be a while though, between the rest of the list and Anime Boston prep. But, yes, do stay and chat, dear. I enjoy having you around. ^.^

Martel Irasia 05-17-2013 04:20 PM

Yes, this is the username I have on every other avatar site I've ever been on.
Crysandrea, Gaia, Ernya, Solia, Roliana (which I haven't done much with)... and now here. It was my mule's name, but I wanted to change it. So now my mule is Stalker Cat, and I'm Martel. ^ ^

And OMG!!! A friend of mine is going to Anime Boston and I wish I could go too, but I have NO MONEY!!! Dx
I couldn't possibly even afford to go for one day. I am broke right now.[cry]

Seridano 05-17-2013 04:48 PM

Could it be that you're a fellow Masshole? O.O

Martel Irasia 05-17-2013 04:50 PM

Rhode Island actually, but I live close to the line that separates RI from Mass. So... yeah.

However, I did live in Swansea, MA for twelve years before my mom and I moved into an apartment complex in RI, so she could be closer to work.

Actually, it was really more like ten-eleven years, but close enough.

Seridano 05-17-2013 05:08 PM

Close enough. I kept looking at the map tracker thing jelly put up and thinking 'where are my fellow Massholes, it lists 8 of us!'
Maybe next year we can gather nearby New Englanders and do a 'Mene hits AB or CTCon' type thing.

Martel Irasia 05-17-2013 05:11 PM

That would be pretty cool. Hopefully next year I'll have saved enough to be able to go. I have yet to go to a con, but I really want to.

Seridano 05-18-2013 12:41 AM

This will be my first year at Anime Boston. In previous years I've hit Connecticon (as it used to be cheaper, though I believe they've raised their prices to match AB this year).
