"Yes, I really mean that. I've got plenty of guest suites, you can have one." Tony shrugged. No big deal to him.
"Just like that?" Maeve asked. "I mean... Last time I was there, it didn't exactly... go well..."
Tony shrugged. "You need a safe place to stay while shit calms down," he said. "I don't mind, nobody else minds and if they do it's my tower. Pepper suggested it, actually, and nobody is stupid enough to go against Pepper."
"Tony, you revoked my codes and kicked me out," Mave pointed out. She was quiet for a moment. "I wasn't sure I was welcome anymore."
"I do things when I'm angry, ask Pepper, she's seen me angry enough times to know what I'm like, I usually take things back when I'm not angry anymore." Tony shrugged. "Besides, it's kind of a moot point now, since SHIELD doesn't exist."
"I don't think it's a moot point, considering I never got any sort of indication that things were okay again," Maeve said.
"Because you were busy trying not to get killed, I figured right then wasn't the best time to let you know hey, I'm not angry anymore." Tony scowled a bit. "You didn't need any distractions, things were bad enough for you already, and I figured you wouldn't come back to the tower right then even if I had sent the spysassins to pick you up."
Maeve was quiet for a moment.
"So why now?" she asked. |
"You're not in immediate danger, so you're not so distracted, but you will be in danger if you stay here much longer. Too many people know you're here, there's too much chatter." Tony shrugged. "You'll last at a guess a week more here."
Maeve glanced at him.
"What have you heard?" she asked. "I did everything I could to keep my head down." |
"Yeah, I've been helping with that," Tony said with a negligent shrug. "But there are a few Hydra agents in the area that have been sniffing around. I think they might have gotten to someone in the building, too."
Maeve sighed.
"Great," she said. She shook her head a bit and then looked at her pokemon. "Gardevoir, shove my things into the duffel from the closet. Chandelure, grab the emergency pack from under the bed. Ditto, go grab the money packets from the hiding places I showed you." All three pokemon nodded and went to do as they were told. |
"So, should I make sure the jet is refueled?" Tony asked. "Or can we stop for food? There's this one place I haven't been in ages, figured I'd stop in while I'm in the area."
"How about we get somewhere safe, first," Maeve said as she gathered up the documents and information she'd managed to salvage before going into hiding. "Then food."
Tony shrugged but texted the pilot to make sure they'd be ready to go when he and Maeve arrived.
"Right, well, whenever you're ready, the jet's fueled and waiting." |
Maeve just nodded a bit as Ditto came back first and gave her four little foil-wrapped packets. Maeve tucked one into her purse and slipped the other three into the duffel that Gardevoir brought out. Chandelure was the last one, lugging out what seemed to be a fireproof lockbox.
"Alright," Maeve said, "that should be everything. If it's not, I can live without it." |
Tony nodded and headed for the door again. Ninetails looked at the group one more time before following Tony.
Maeve followed after them, Ditto across her shoulders and Gardevoir and Chandelure following behind. She glanced around a few times when they got outside, tension settling into her shoulders.
Tony led the way, looking unconcerned. But he knew what was going on, and he had the suitcase armor with him, after all. Fortunately, it didn't take them long to get to the car, and he popped the trunk for her.
Maeve quickly put her things into the trunk and closed it again. She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair, making a bit of a face when she caught sight of the fading color.
Tony hopped into the car, letting the pokemon settle.
"You can re-dye it or turn it back to brown when we get back to the tower," he said, catching sight of her. "Hell, Natasha already has an assortment of colors in the tower, you can just use one of hers and I'll replace it before she even notices." |
"You're assuming she wouldn't notice," Maeve replied as she got into the car. "She's Natasha Romanov. She'd notice before I even touch it." She wrinkled her nose a bit. "Besides, I don't make as good a redhead as she does. I prefer being a bit darker."
"I did mention we have all the colors, didn't I?" Tony said with a shrug. "Just tell me what you want and I can have it delivered, no problem."
"Really, it's okay," Maeve said. "I can wait for the red to fade and grow out, it's no big deal. I don't want to fry out my hair, anyways."
Tony shrugged, glancing into the rearview mirror a few times. "We'll talk about it when we get back," he said. "You might want to hold on to something." He turned sharply and sped up well over the speed limit.
