Nick studied him for a moment. He itched to do something---to make a move, the way Solace had done before. But he couldn't find the courage. He couldn't move his hands, his legs, couldn't form words. He bit his lip and resigned himself to sitting on the bank with his legs curled against him, shaking a bit. Nick hated how much of a coward he was at this moment, this point in time that could allow anything to happen. He just had to make it. But he physically shook his head at the thought, but only slightly, and finally allowed himself to move just enough to lean against Solace. His water-cool skin eased the rush of heat making its way through Nick. |
Solace smiled lightly as the feeling of his love's head resting on his shoulder snapped him out of his deep ponderings. He lifted a hand and stroked Nick's hair, turning his head and kissing the human's forehead. "This place... It's so beautiful... I... I never noticed until now," he spoke, watching a leaf flutter down from a tree above and landing softly on the river's surface, floating away like a boat. "It was so much more beautiful back then, when the trees were still young..."

Nick nodded solemnly. If only he had seen the forest---the world, perhaps---when he was as he was. But his memory was coming back... Maybe he’d be able to see it some day soon. Until then, Nick would have to deal with the blank spaces in the memories that gradually came back to him. Solace’s words seemed... sad. He leaned against him. “I know how... intent you are in coming back with us. But I can tell how afraid you are of leaving, even if it’s not an emotion you’re accustomed to feeling. How about this: How about we be afraid together?” It was a silly thing to think---but perhaps it was the most suitable. He could be afraid of his past returning to him, and Solace could be afraid of... well, perhaps losing himself, losing what he thought had come back. That just wouldn’t happen, now while Nick had any say in it. |
Solace glanced down at the man resting on his shoulder and smiled softly. Sharing their emotions seemed like such a lovely idea. "Perhaps you can be afraid for the both of us," he spoke quietly. He lifted his hand and stroked Nick's face lovingly, humming to himself for awhile. The others in the camp had gotten louder, as if they had finished cooking their meal. Solace smiled, but couldn't help but to regret agreeing to leave his homeland.
"Nick! Food's done!" he heard the girl call from within the trees. He stood and waited for Nick to get to his feet. |
