A Marvel-ous Bishiworld Adventure
Faye sighed as she sat down in the food court.
"You know," she commented, taking her phone out of her pocket, "Window shopping should not be this tiring. It's not like we're buying anything." She grinned across the table, brushing brown hair out of her face. |
"Not yet, anyway," Rei teased with a grin, hazel-green eyes glinting with humor. "And today is one of those days I both love and hate technology." She looked at her phone as it buzzed at her, announcing a new email. Grumbling a little, she opened the email, browsing it quickly.
"Well, that's not exactly an answer from my Study Abroad program advisor." |
Faye's phone buzzed as well, and she blinked. She wasn't expecting any emails. She opened her browser curiously.
"...It's blank," she said, raising an eyebrow a bit. "Blank, with a link." She shook her head a bit. "Weird." |
"Very." Rei blinked. "Sounds like you got the same email as me. That's kind of odd too."
|
"Could it be from the school?" Faye asked, looking at the email again. She moved her thumb up to leave the email window, but accidentally hit the link instead. "Well, guess I'm about to find out." The link finished opening, and the screen of her phone went black. "What...?"
|
Rei had just touched the link, since she was too curious for her own good, and frowned when her phone went black too.
"Oh come on," she muttered, tapping the screen before trying to force a shut down. "Damn thing froze up on me." |
Faye was doing the same.
"Damn thing..." she muttered. "Still weird, though. Since when would we get the exact same email like that?" She was stopped from saying anything else when the phone's screen flashed at her. It got brighter and brighter, and eventually she had to close her eyes against it. |
The same thing happened with Rei's phone, and she had to blink a few times when the glow faded, clearing her vision.
And then she stopped and blinked again. "Okay, so, some random rock hit me on the head and I'm hallucinating. Or this is some strange dream. Or something." Because there was no way she'd gone from sitting outside a café to sitting in the dirt next to an unpaved road with nothing but trees and grass in sight. |
Faye blinked as well and froze as she looked around.
"If you're hallucinating, then I am too," she said cautiously. She trembled slightly as she tensed. |
"No, wrong, hallucinations are not shared." Rei looked around with big eyes. Because really this was just totally unreal. And scary. And weird.
"What the hell just happened?" |
"Why are you asking me?" Faye asked, her voice going a bit shrill. "I have no idea!"
|
"Rhetorical question. Take deep breaths, Faye, don't you dare go hyperventilating on me." Rei was working to keep herself calm, still looking around.
|
Carefully, Faye got to her feet to look around.
"I don't see anything familiar," she said, clutching her phone in her hand. |
"Neither do I. And reception here is weird." Rei looked at her phone, which was fluctuating between having complete service and none. "This is very, very strange."
|
Faye's phone was having the same problems. It kept going from three bars to five to none, and it kept trying to tap into some sort of wireless before giving up and starting over.
"At least we're on some sort of road," she finally said. "Maybe it goes somewhere? I mean, roads have to go somewhere." |
"Hypothetically." Rei looked down the road in both directions, which were nearly identical. "Which way, though?"
|
"I don't know," Faye said, glancing back and forth between both directions. "Pick one?"
|
Rei looked between the two again before she shrugged, starting to walk. "Well, I guess we can try this way," she muttered, brushing auburn hair up into a quick ponytail off her neck.
|
Faye quickly followed Rei, staying close. She didn't want to get separated, not when they had no idea where they were.
|
Rei kept walking for a little while, looking around as they walked. She didn't recognize anything even vaguely, and that freaked her out just a bit.
So when she saw another person heading toward them she could have cried. "You two okay?" the lady called. "You look a little lost." |
Faye was about ready to cry, too.
"We're so lost," she replied as the woman got closer. |
As the woman approached, she noticed neither one had belts, and they were both still clutching the cell phones. Oh boy. More newbies.
"Alright, let's get you two back to town. Come on, this way, it's only a few hours' walk." She smiled kindly and herded the two in front of her. |
Faye blinked even as she turned to follow.
"Um... You seem to know what's going on," she said cautiously. "We're very much in the dark." |
"I know. You two just arrived, right? Got an email, crashed your computer or phone or whatever, then bright light then you were here?" The woman looked at both of them. When Rei nodded, she smiled a bit. "Well, girls, you're not in Kansas anymore."
|
Faye opened her mouth to ask what twisted rainbow they must have been tossed over, and then closed it again.
"Then where are we?" she asked instead. |
