"It would seem we have another goal," Loki said, his voice mild. "Repressing that urge to latch onto a mind when you wake."
"I didn't mean to disturb anyone," Amy said softly. "It wasn't intentional."
"I was already awake," Loki said dismissively. "It is of no concern, anyway. Perhaps you need a distraction so you can relax before trying to sleep again?"
"I, um... I'm not really planning on going back to sleep," Amy admitted after a moment. "It's not the best idea to try to get any more sleep tonight."
"Well then, I suppose it's a good thing I do not plan on sleeping tonight, either." Loki raised an eyebrow at her.
"Wasn't aware gods slept," Amy mumbled into her mug of tea as she sat down.
"Occasionally. It is nice. To have a reprieve." Loki followed her in, shutting the door and sitting across from her. "It helps to pass the time."
"Time I'm sure could be better passed than keeping a basket case company," Amy murmured into her tea. "Especially a basket case with night terrors."
"A basket case?" Loki frowned just a little. "I don't believe I understand that term."
"A basket case," Amy said. "A, um... Insane. Not all there. Deficient in some way." She didn't look at him, not wanting to see pity on his face if she did.
Loki snorted. Oh yes, he was very familiar with those terms now, he'd had them flung at him in Asgard.
"That makes two of us, then." |
Amy glanced at him cautiously. She hadn't had anyone actually identify with her on that point before, so she wasn't quite sure how to react.
Loki just shrugged and settled back in his seat. "Have you ever thought that what you are does not make you deficient, but better than them?"
"I try not to," Amy admitted after a moment. "It's a dangerous thought, to think that you're better than everyone else."
"Perhaps," Loki agreed. "But as you are, it seems you think too little of yourself."
Amy was quiet for a moment.
"Maybe it's what I deserve," she said finally. "I can't even sleep without my sister around, I'm not better than anyone." |
"Sudden changes are often bad for people, even Asgardians," Loki said, looking at her. "And this 'deserving' nonsense is not something you should dwell on."
Amy didn't reply, instead just sipping at her tea. She wasn't about to argue with a god.
Loki looked at her for a few moments before he shrugged and settled in. He wasn't going anywhere, after all.
After a few minutes, Amy looked at him.
"So why are you here?" she asked. |
"Should I not be?" Loki shot back. "I thought you might enjoy some company at this late hour."
"You don't strike me as the type to do anything on a whim," Amy pointed out. "Everything you do is carefully planned."
"Do you think so?" Loki smiled. "Perhaps. Perhaps I have whims as well."
"I'm betting you have them," Amy said. "But acting on them? It doesn't seem quite right with what I've learned so far." She shrugged a little. "I don't mind if you came here because you were bored. I've already said being an amusement is better than some alternatives."
"Indeed," Loki murmured. She was partially right, although as per usual with him, his plots had many reasons.
