Foods you refuse to eat with a fork

Are there any foods that you don't like to eat with a fork? Why? Are there other forms of utensils you use for them? Or do you just use your hands?

For me, Asian food is something I hate eating with a fork. Since I was old enough to use chopsticks I have always done so because I felt that it was more "respectful" to the chef to eat the food the way it was meant to be.

Similarly I don't like eating American food with chopsticks because it just doesn't feel right.

In a restaurant serving an Asian cuisine I would try and use chopsticks (if provided, I'd be too shy to ask) but for my own cooking or ready meals I'd probably just use a fork. I've never thought about it terms of respect, more convenience. My parents have a set of (probably entirely Western) 'Chinese' crockery at home and sets of reusable chopsticks but all the dishes in my flat are hand-me-downs and I only have disposable chopsticks.

I know in Indian culture some food is eaten without any utensils, either with just the hand or with bread but I imagine it's a skill that requires some practise.

Bread as a utensil? That's not something I've heard of before... that's interesting

KatMagenta 04-27-2013 04:29 PM

I think when eating foods like curry it's acceptable to use the bread (roti, naan etc.) to scoop up food as well as using your fingers to transfer food on to the bread before eating it. My uncle served with some Indian crews while he was in the Merchant Navy so most of what I know is second hand knowledge from him.

Another one for the "rice" column!

Not that I flat-out refuse to eat rice with a fork; I would much rather use a spoon, because it's so much easier to eat rice with, in my opinion.

If I can I like to use my hands or some kinda of bread. I love things like curry, hummous, raita, and the such for that reason.

Pizza. People that use forks and knives for pizza make me really uncomfortable.

MinakoAxule 04-27-2013 10:51 PM

The only time I use fork and knife for pizza is if it's too hot and I'm too hungry to wait lol!

I use a spoon with rice.

Asian food I use chopsticks learned how to use them when I was 4 lol!

With pasta I use a fork but I use bread to help twirl it instead of a spoon or knife.

Oh cereal or oat meal you need to use a spoon just silly using a fork~!

jupiter 04-28-2013 12:03 AM

Which is strange, because it's more than likely not real Chinese food, and more than likely you're using Japanese styled chopsticks, hahaha!

I like to use a spoon for everything. I have spoons with long handles (Korean).

The Wandering Poet 04-28-2013 02:58 AM

@ Plateu - Haha I so agree... even when I have to, because a few times I've had pizzas that would actually fall apart if you picked it up o.o makes the pizza depressing to eat...

@ Min - Help twirl it? Oh my I seem to have missed a huge chunk of the "how to eat spaghetti" class... I always just used the fork.

@ Jupiter - That's rather true I don't actually know what exactly the Chinese traditionally use o.o

I prefer to eat noodles with chopsticks, and anything from a sushi place or the japanse restaurant in town. Noodles, because it's just easier, for some reason. And the Japanese restaurant and sushi places don't provide forks unless you ask. And I'm too awkward for that. I prefer to eat curry with Naan, because my parents spent time living in poorer parts of Fiji, and they prefer to serve it like that.

I eat a lot of food with my hands, but that's just because I pick at food rather than eating it normally. (Obviously stuff like sandwiches, pizza, french fries, I eat with my fingers too.)

Whisper Invictus 04-28-2013 03:38 AM

I refuse to eat pizza with a fork [lol]

But really, I feel weird not using chop sticks when I go to Asian restaurants...

The Wandering Poet 04-28-2013 03:41 AM

I used chopsticks on a pizza once... if you think eating it with a fork is bad....... [lol]

Whisper Invictus 04-28-2013 03:43 AM

[lol] Well, my mom eats pizza with a fork... so that's why I said it I think xD She scrapes all the yummy stuff off and eats the pizza bread, then eats the toppings with her fork.... so weird

The Wandering Poet 04-28-2013 03:45 AM

....what? And I thought watching Americans eating tacos was weird...

Bearzy 04-28-2013 03:47 AM

You're going to have to explain the Taco thing, Poet.

The Wandering Poet 04-28-2013 03:51 AM

I've seen too many Americans eat a taco top down... Sour Cream, then Lettuce, then meat and beans...

T_T or the guy eating a taco with a FORK!!

Bearzy 04-28-2013 03:55 AM

Wait what? Aren't you supposed to eat a taco like a sandwich? Like, from the side and all at once?

The Wandering Poet 04-28-2013 03:58 AM

Yup... from the side. You only eat from the top corner in order to get access to the next bite.

The one with a fork though... that was just awful... it was a hard shell taco and taco pieces were flying all over his plate as he ate

Bearzy 04-28-2013 04:09 AM

I'm so confused by the logic in that. (Also, now I want Tacos. Thanks.)

The Wandering Poet 04-28-2013 04:11 AM

Ah whoops ^^"

Chexala 04-28-2013 04:11 AM

Oh god, eating a hard shell taco with a fork? That makes me feel uncomfortable just thinking about it! I mean, if it were a soft shell, it would be tolerable, but a hard shell....

I don't have any foods/utensil combo restrictions. I use utensils according to my mood. Sometimes I just really want chopsticks and sometimes I really just want a fork. <shrug>

I do eat popcorn with chopsticks sometimes though. :3

The Wandering Poet 04-28-2013 04:14 AM

popcorn with chopsticks? Brilliant!!

Chexala 04-28-2013 04:17 AM

@Poet: It really is. It's a habit I picked up from a friend, because 1) makes your popcorn last longer because it takes longer to eat and 2) keeps your hands clean when you are using the computer etc. XD

Bearzy 04-28-2013 04:28 AM

That is actually kind of ingenious. I love it.
