Bad for your health? No, I don't think so.

Now, your wallet, on the other hand... *inwardly weeps at the fact that he can't preorder the Sailor Moon SHFiguart right now* (Yes, this exists -- Bandai is coming out with a Sailor Moon figure as part of their SHFiguarts line, with the possibility of the other Sailor Senshi being made... *sigh* oh, Mercury... *_* *cough* did i say that last bit out loud? oops. ^^; disregard that, lol)

maidenroseheart 05-08-2013 11:54 PM

Not happy, just less miserable.

lol, bad for your wallet, yes. I got the cosplay keys from Fairy Tail and one of the keys is missing and a broken duplicate of another is in it's place :P

Think that's bad? Try being in the toku fandom. Kamen Rider belts can go into the HUNDREDS. [cry]

That being said, I'd love to be able to get the rerelease of the OOO Driver(from Kamen Rider OOO when it comes out. or the rereleased Double Driver(see: Kamen Rider W).

Now I wanna go watch some Rider. [:(]

maidenroseheart 05-09-2013 07:02 AM

lol enjoy :)

onsenmark 05-09-2013 04:08 PM

Thanks. I just hope the yen-to-dollar ratio is favorable when I get around to ordering, lol.

maidenroseheart 05-09-2013 09:00 PM

Yeah, it should be... things have been looking pretty good lately.

Anime can be both healthy and unhealthy. It all comes down to the individual.

Even though it's obvious nobody can be perfect like anime portrays people... I think it can be a problem particularly among certain cosplayers and young people living in east Asia.

East Asia is more affected by young peoples' desire for big eyes, double eyelids, pale skin, hair that isn't black, and eyes that aren't dark-brown. They essentially idolize the look of young model Europeans.

South Korea has a phenomenon known as Ulzzang, which essentially the person will try to make themselves look as cute as possible, often using plastic surgery(extremely common in SK), make up(including eyelid glue and circle lenses), Photoshop, bright lights, and clever angles to achieve the "perfect face", similarly to ball-joint dolls or anime.

As long as you are not prone to these delusions of beauty, you will be fine loving anime.
I love anime and ball-joint dolls, but I do not wish to look like them, because that would cause many physiological problems in the human body.

Aside from the beauty aspect, there's also addiction. That's also dependent on the individual. Some are casual fans, or get into it just enough that they aren't completely overtaken by something and compelled to spend every dollar on it.
There's always articles circulating about how some 30-year old otaku just spent thousands on some idol or anime merchandise of his favorite anime waifu, and that's when you know it's become unhealthy for the person.

You have made some very good points. Also I am glad you brought up the problem with Ulzzang. I didn't know the name but I have watched the actions of my students when they leave for university. Some don't even watch anime, but are influenced by society that that is beauty.

Yes, I am not sure if anime influences real life beauty evolution(among non-anime fans), or if real life beauty affects anime beauty evolution, but they certainly do seem connected in that way...

At the same time, not many people in the west complain about cartoons affecting self esteem, unless it's a fashion/doll cartoon with skinny characters(Bratz, Winx, etc).

maidenroseheart 05-11-2013 11:52 AM

I noticed that... and it bothers me. Especially that they would pick on foreign cartoons the way they do.
