"I can help." He wanted someone else to travel with him. Ruben wanted a pack, even if it was a small, two person, one. Somehow, here had to be a way to convince the not wolf to join him. Being a lone wolf wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

It was hard. Taking down large prey, when it was there, was nearly impossible alone. More cunning then Ruben thought he'd possessed was needed for that. The only reason he had survived so long was because of his animal instincts and human mind. If he needed to bend his thoughts to adapting a hunting method for a non-wolf then he would. "And we can figure out what you're good at doing, hunting or scavenging."

Michi could almost tell there was a little... desperation? A bit of a prodding sense of want behind the words. Maybe it would be better to get back to his wilder roots, perhaps make his mother, his siblings, proud. Even if he’d never see them again, it was worth paying a type of homage to their memory. He nodded, wringing his hands. “I suppose I can.” He said at last. “I just don’t want to slow you down.” Would that be worth it? Michi was fast on all fours, just as fast on only two. If necessary, he might even be able to use his more domesticated side to their advantage around villages or larger towns. And perhaps he’d even be able to steal from open markets. It was low, but sometimes very necessary.

“Um, my name’s Michi.” He added quickly, standing rather awkwardly since he didn’t know how this one introduced himself. Most humans hugged, shook hands, or just nodded. But it had to be different with wild dogs, wolves, foxes, other shifters that didn’t live near human settlements.

Ruben smiled, lips quirking up in amusement to show his fangs. Before speaking his name, he ambled forward on all floors to sniff at the other man and familiarize himself with his scent. He sneezed, and smelled again. Hay, horse, the musk of a fox-type canine... He butted his shoulder playfully against Michi's leg, growling a little. He still felt that urge, but did his best to tamp it down. The other shifter hadn't seemed to like that.

The wolf was a little surprised that Michi couldn't smell how attracted the wolf was to him. Too domesticated, he supposed. "Ruben... You, hm, won't slow me ..." His speech was still halting after having spent so long as an animal. It was hard to find words again when he hadn't needed them for so long. Dimly he remembered packs he'd run with before, but they'd all been animals. It had been so easy to let his mind slip away with them.

Michi shifted a little. Ruben? That seemed a bit human, for a wild shifter's name. Perhaps he had at one time spent more time around humanity. Then again, his own name was far too human for what he was as well. They had, though, lived in a seaside town, a fishing community. He was too worried about Ruben's deeper intentions, though, to try to sense what the other shifter was feeling. The scents that other creatures gave off could tell a lot about them even from a distance, though Michi's breaths were shallow and the wind was a bit erratic, taking away from the intensity of what might have let him understand a bit more.

He bit his lip before speaking. He had his self-doubts, hoped he could survive if he left the village. It had been a long time... He crouched down, feeling a bit lightheaded at the prospect. "I... Ahem, I can go." He said after a time. He couldn't seem to wrap his mind around it. He would have to keep his eye on Ruben---the wild one.

PapillonCameo 06-08-2013 01:23 AM

His parents, they'd made sure his name was a human one, or that he knew a human one .. The details were fuzzy in his mind. The wolf shook his head. "Where would you like to go? Are there places you've always wanted to see?" He could think of nowhere to go, save to wander the forest aimlessly, in search of sustenance. It was how he'd lived so far, but no more.

This way, the other man might not feel so overwhelmed. They would be traveling across the land together, stopping here and there at villages, instead of plunging completely into the wilds.

Tachigami 06-08-2013 01:44 AM

Places he wanted to see? Now that he thought about it, there was always one place he'd always been desperate to see again, but had never had the courage or will to begin such an extensive journey. He was a social creature, after all, it was why his kind lived and traveled in packs. It was why he liked being around humans so much, they liked to pet him, show him attention, talk to him though they thought he couldn't understand. He wanted to see the Japanese village he would have grown up in had he not been stolen away. "I..." He cleared his throat, pausing. "Um, I'd like... t-to go home." His voice cracked and Michi lost his composure, hiding his face as he fought tears. He wanted to go home, but didn't want to force anyone to come with him. A travel companion would be nice, but not one that would resent him for his destination choice.

He sniffed and shook his head, looking up again. "I'm sorry. I... just... I haven't been home in so long... I'd like to see where I was born."

PapillonCameo 06-08-2013 02:02 AM

A soft sound left the older man's lips, and he leaned over to rub his head against Michi's shoulder and neck in a way he hoped was comforting. "Then to your home we shall go." He really had no preference at all for their destination, so long as they staid together. Ruben was already beginning to think of Michi as his pack. Oh it was so wonderful to have company once more at last!

He continued rubbing against the other shifter, making small sounds all the while. That scent was going to drive him mad, and Ruben couldn't understand why it simply wouldn't leave him be. It wafted from the other shifter's skin drawing Ruben ever nearer.

Tachigami 06-08-2013 02:58 AM

Michi shivered, gritting his teeth and forcing himself to back away a little. Ruben was a bit rough, mostly in feel---perhaps that was the wild blood in him, having existed in the extensive forests for so long, bringing down animals larger than rabbits and mice, not accepting giveaways. And his natural scent was earthy, with a light bloody backdrop, natural, and somehow Michi could catch something else... A musky scent that had him leaning forward without really realizing it, until he almost lost balance and, embarrassed, skittered to the side.

"It's a... a long way." He noted, offering Ruben a way out he hoped the wolf shifter wouldn't accept. "Really long. It could take ages to travel so far... And the ocean..." He hadn't thought of that. It was too far to swim. They would have to steal away on a ship, like the one Michi had been taken away from his home in. What if Ruben didn't want to? What if they got to be close during the journey...?

PapillonCameo 06-08-2013 04:40 PM

Ruben righted himself and shot a feral grin Michi's way. "It sounds like an adventure. Besides, there's probably better hunting along the way then there would be if I stayed here." There were no more animals around, and those that were had a certain wary fearfulness about them. The fear ruined their taste, it wasn't the same. It wouldn't have bothered most, but it did him.

His voice was becoming less rough. Ruben still refused to stand upon two feet, like a human. He was wild still, and always would be. He didn't even know what the ocean looked like. He knew lakes, but couldn't image what an endless sheet of water could appear like. Traveling by sea, it would probably terrify him if he knew what it actually meant.

Tachigami 06-08-2013 06:26 PM

It was a good enough excuse for Michi. He had always wanted to go back, and to show off his native home to someone else, someone that willingly spent time with him, was more than appealing. The young shifter felt like leaping around, and as he went from two legs to four furry ones, he did just that, shedding cloth cover for fur and yipping in an energetic type of happiness he had always had to push down to make himself tolerated within the village walls. The humans there didn't appreciate overly energetic animals that didn't listen to orders, and Michi wanted to be welcomed rather than chased away.

And he felt happy, really happy, for the first time in a long time. Maybe Ruben needed him to be around. If first impressions were anything to go by he was happy to have Michi tagging along on whatever journey was in mind.

PapillonCameo 06-10-2013 07:31 PM

A surprising laugh left his lips as he shook his head. "Show me the way, then. I've no idea where to go." The other shifter was an excitable one. With a yawn, the wolf shifter willed his muscles to change, his whole body to stretch and morph into something other then what he seemed to be. It felt good to be furred again, but dimly Ruben remembered how close he had been to losing himself. If Michi hadn't come along, he would have been lost to the wolf. He'd needed a rude awakening like the little fox-thing had given him.

Tachigami 06-14-2013 03:27 AM

Michi crept forward, touching his nose to Ruben's. And when he spoke, it was in a way that no human would ever be able to understand: "The sun rises in the east... That way." He looked over his shoulder. "It's that way!" He leapt onto a stone that jutted out of a small mound of hard dirt. "If we just keep the sun in front of us in the morning... and behind us in the evenings... We'll get there!"

But he had ran for so long to get here... Michi's paws had bloodied over the days he forced himself to run. But this time he would have someone with him, who would tell him to stop or leave him if he didn't. And Michi didn't want to be alone anymore." He moved forward. "Come, come!" He leapt over a fallen tree. "We'll get there! We'll get there someday soon! And see the ocean... And find a way to get over it, and get to the island, my home..." He whined, so eager to move, to go and find his way back, to see those strange bears of black and white and those little red dog-like things he'd never learned the name of.

PapillonCameo 07-07-2013 07:21 PM

He sneezed slightly at the touch, shook his head. Then the wolf was off, padded feet digging into the ground and leaving nary a mark as he followed his pack. Ruben felt happier then he could ever remember, save for when he'd run with his old pack. The wolf could have remembered what happened to them if he wanted to, but it was too painful a thought. "Too eager, pup! Calm down and pace yourself, or you'll die by your own eagerness."

To emphasize his words, Ruben ran forward to nip lightly at the other canine. There would be ample time later to run, when there was a need to. For now it would be better to simply lope along without pushing. This was only the beginning of their journey, which boded to be a long one.
