This Rough Magic: A Game of Songs

Three things that make me smile are words, music, and games.

And, so: A game of songs, lyrics, and mysteries...

This Rough Magic:
Tam Lin's Music Game

Quote:

“This rough magic I here abjure and when I have required some heavenly music, which even now I do, to work mine end upon their senses that this airy charm is for, I'll break my staff, bury it certain fathoms in the earth, and deeper than did ever plummet sound, I'll drown my book.”
- Prospero from Shakespeare's Tempest.

FIRST ROUND:
Ana Ng
If You Want Me to Stay
Money for Nothing
Rock and Roll Suicide
The Sickbed of Cuchulainn
We Are the Champions

THE RULES

The game is simple:

The person running the round posts a list of songs, all of which have a shared theme but one. This theme or shared element could be within the lyrics, within the music, or something about the history of the songs. The players guess what the theme is, and which song is the odd one out.

Here are the rest of the details:

Rounds:
- Songs can be posted as titles only (artist optional, no other details)
- Each round will have at least four song titles, and no more than eight
- All songs must be available on SoundCloud or Grooveshark
- The theme must be discoverable through listening or research-- It cannot not be something specific to the submitter like "I listened to them all on my birthday" but it can be somewhat open to interpretation.
- The winner of the previous round may post a new round. (They should coordinate with me, so the post gets edited.)
- I will submit the first round, and by default any others.
- New rounds will be in the first post, plus as a new post.

Guessing:
- You are encouraged to listen to the songs (unless you already know them) before guessing.
- No referring to transcribed song lyrics. (You can use the internet to look up history and theories about songs.)
- A guess consists of one theme answer and one odd song out answer. (Both, and only one of each.)
- You may not guess again unless someone else has guessed in between.
- Please put the word GUESS in bold and red in your post so I can see them easily.
- You are encouraged to post links (SoundCloud or Grooveshark) to the songs, in your guess.
- If you win a round, you may post the next round. (Otherwise, I will.)

Winning:
- The same person cannot win two rounds in a row.
- You can collect a prize after one win, or save up for a bigger price.
- ONE WIN: 100 gold
- TWO WINS: 250 gold
- FIVE WINS: Currently available CI

TLDR:
- A round is a list of song titles
- Guess the theme they share, and the odd one out that doesn't
- Include "GUESS" in your answer
- Each player can only guess once per page
- You also need to wait for someone else to guess before you can guess again
- Don't look up the lyrics
- Win stuff!

EXAMPLE ROUND

Round Posting:
Quote:

"Band on the Run"
"My Sweet Lord"
"Maybe I'm Amazed"
"It Don't Come Easy"
"Twist and Shout"
Successful Answer:
Quote:

"GUESS: Twist and Shout is the odd song out. The other four were written and performed by former members of the Beatles, after they were in the band. ("Twist and Shout" was covered by the Beatles, but not written by any of them.)

PAST ROUNDS:
(Coming after the first round...)

Thanks. I hope people like it. I was trying to come up with a game that could work on a forum, but wasn't all about text.

Seridano 06-11-2013 06:43 PM

I'll give it a shot on my next work break.

Tam Lin 06-11-2013 06:46 PM

I wonder if Seridano:, dessertdesiert:, Vox:, Queen_Andais:, hummy: or any of our other playmates from past games might enjoy this one?

(Ooops. Pinged Seri a little too late.)

Zombie Pixie 06-11-2013 07:01 PM

lol <w< i'll ping some people if ya want

Tam Lin 06-11-2013 07:03 PM

You'd be welcome to! I'd love for people who like games to see this thread, in case any of them are interested. (Game threads seem to be my favorite part of Mene, so I thought I should host one myself.)

Tam Lin 06-11-2013 11:25 PM

Sadly, it looks like pings/mentions are broken right now.

Queen_Andais 06-12-2013 12:27 AM

The pings are working, I was just at work when this was sent and I don't get decent enough internet service in the building to do things on Mene.

Looks like a wonderful game. Will definitely do my best to participate in the game.

Tam Lin 06-12-2013 12:32 AM

Oh, good-- Glad you made your way here! (I got a ping with a broken link, and so did someone else. So I think they aren't all working.)

Seridano 06-12-2013 12:45 AM

Oooh, Queenie's here!

Tam Lin 06-12-2013 12:57 AM

It looks like the game may be starting to gain some momentum. We have had quite a few visitors, and I know at least one person is checking out the songs. I hope I didn't make this round too hard!

Vox 06-12-2013 02:12 AM

Oh wow. This is going to require some research. Let's see if I can figure this one out...

Seridano 06-12-2013 03:48 AM

/cheers Vox on

Vox 06-12-2013 04:15 PM

Well, nothing from Wikipedia so far, haha. I'll have to wait until later to try actually listening to the songs. I've actually never heard of Ana Ng or The Sickbed of Cuchulainn.

And I have a feeling about which one is the odd song out... but I'll wait until I have more evidence to make a guess. Do we have infinite guesses?

Tam Lin 06-12-2013 04:53 PM

The rules explain more about guessing. You do have infinite guesses, but you can only guess once per page-- and you can't guess again unless someone else has guessed in between. (I may tweak that for the next round depending on how this goes, though.)

Also remember that you're supposed to guess the odd one out and the theme the other share, at the same time. (Otherwise people could just guess each song one at a time, and work out the theme from there.)

hummy 06-13-2013 12:37 PM

Thank you for the Ping!
Good Luck!

Tam Lin 06-13-2013 02:20 PM

I have made some changed to the rules, to streamline the game.

1.) Listening to the songs is encouraged, and will usually help get the answer, but it's not required.

2.) You no longer need to wait for a new page to guess again. (Just for someone else to guess.)

Seridano 06-13-2013 05:17 PM

Eh, but if listening is not required, does that mean we can't hide the uniting theme in the tone/lyrics/etc?

dessertdesiert 06-13-2013 05:48 PM

I am terrible with songs, and what are those sites that you listed to listen to them on?
