The man paused for a moment, thinking. "I was at the store last week, and I remember hearing a couple'a the local hunters talking about some big tracks they'd found. That's all, though. Nothing else has been abnormal."
Sam and Runa both nodded, and Runa made a note of it on her notepad.
"I think that's everything," she said to the man. "You've been very helpful, thank you." |
The man nodded and waited for them to back off to shut the door and head back inside. Reporters were strange people.
"Well, I think we know what made those tracks. Whatever is eating chupas." Dean made a face. It was all still so wrong and weird. |
"Right," Runa said. "So I think we need to find those game hunters and ask where they found the tracks. It might help."
"Right. Back into town to get directions." Dean headed for his car.
Kyra blinked when it looked like they were leaving already. "Get anything useful?" she asked Runa as she hopped off the car. |
"I think so," Runa said, handing Kyra the notebook. "Apparently he overheard some game hunters in the area mention the enormous, strange tracks they found. And I think whatever this thing is, it's eating enough chupas to affect the flocks, the farmers aren't losing nearly as many sheep."
"Alright, so something big, nasty, with a taste for predators. But I wonder why chupas specifically? I haven't heard anything about dead bears found in the area, and no domestic dogs as far as I know." Kyra frowned as she got in the car again. "It doesn't make sense."
"Maybe it's something about chupas," Runa said. "They're not being completely eaten, either, or quietly disappearing as if they were being hunted for food. Whatever this thing is, it's literally just killing them."
"It's all very weird." Kyra shook her head. "Well, let's go see what we can find out." She settled in to follow Dean into town so they could get a better idea where they were going.
Runa nodded and got into the car with Kyra. Sam got into the front seat of the Impala, briefly checking to make sure both angels were in the back seat.
Cas was sitting in the back with Gabriel, looking rather long-suffering now. Dean headed off towards the center of town, which wasn't very big. He figured it shouldn't take long to find someone to talk to. Fortunately.
Gabriel, for the moment, was behaving himself. He wasn't going to bother his little brother all the time; that took the fun out of things.
Fortunately, it didn't take long to get to the main store in town, and Dean parked in front of it, looking at it (because really, he could have sworn it was straight out of a Western movie or something). But he got out and looked at the others.
"Split up and find someone to talk to?" he suggested. |
"Pair up, though," Runa said. She definitely wanted the angels to be supervised.
Sam seemed to be following the same train of thought, because he nodded. "Come on, Gabe," he said, gesturing for the archangel to follow him. |
Dean looked at Cas, who shrugged, and he nodded. "Let us know if you hear anything," he said to the girls before he and Cas left.
"Well, that worked well." Kyra shrugged and headed up the few steps to the store. |
"Better than leaving the two angels to wander around on their own," Runa pointed out. "The town wouldn't survive it."
"No, it wouldn't," Kyra said, shaking her head a bit. "Well, let's go see who we can find to talk to, shall we?"
Runa nodded and glanced around.
"Let's see... Dean would go into the bar to ask around, Sam would be practical and go into the hunting gear store... Come on, there's a 7-Eleven, let's check there," she said. |
Kyra nodded and let her lead, following her into the 7-Eleven. The clerk looked bored, watching a football game on the small TV. He barely even glanced at them as they walked in.
Runa went over to the counter and watched the game for a minute or so.
"Game any good?" she asked, glancing at the clerk, trying to open up the conversation. |
"Nah. My team's losing." The clerk looked at her and shrugged. "But what can you do, right? Gotta get entertainment somewhere 'round here."
"No kidding," Runa said. "I heard something funky was going on in this town, though, that must be entertaining, right? Something new?"
"What, with all the dead dogs?" The clerk snorted. "Nah, that's just freakin' weird. I don't even like dogs, and these ones are fugly."
"Fugly, like with freaky big eyes and weird teeth and looking all mangy and gangly?" Runa asked. "I heard. Weird shit."
"Seriously. And hunters are talking about even bigger things out in the wilds now too? Shit, man, I'm moving as soon as I've got money saved up." The clerk shook his head.
