Dean headed back over to the cars, where the other four were waiting.
"So we've got a starting point. Everyone else thinks it's a bear." "Are we talking teddy bear or angry mother polar bear here?" Kyra raised an eyebrow. |
"They think it's something along the lines of a grizzly," Sam said. "But a bear doesn't make sense. Why kill chupas and not the sheep?" He shook his head. "We have a starting point, though. They said they found the tracks out by the winter sheep-grazing grounds."
"Great." Kyra pulled up her map again and handed it over to Sam so he could figure out a more precise location, since he had all the information.
Sam accepted the map and looked it over.
"So, what, we're hunting a giant bear-thing that can take down chupacabras without a problem?" Runa asked. She grinned a bit, and it was just the least bit feral. "Sounds like fun." |
Dean looked at her and snorted. "It's definitely not the norm," he agreed mildly. "Should be interesting."
Kyra eyed the two before she rolled her eyes. |
Runa nodded, still grinning a bit, and went into the trunk of the car to check their hunting kit. It wasn't great for beast hunting, but th machete would work alright, and they had regular shotgun rounds. They would be okay.
Kyra let Runa do the checking and let her pick her weapon first. Clearly it had been too long since Runa had had a good physical challenge.
Runa just wordlessly grabbed the machete, idly testing its edge on her thumb. Satisfied that it was still sharp, she put it back into its sheath and set it aside, ignoring her bleeding thumb.
Dean noticed and huffed. "Was that necessary?" he asked her, eyeing her thumb before deciding that no, she probably didn't need a bandaid.
"How else should I have checked the edge?" Runa asked, glancing at him. "You see a convenient laser-based measure anywhere?"
"You flick your thumb against it, not slice yourself open," Dean said, rolling his eyes and showing her.
"I didn't slice myself open," Runa said. "Honestly, it's a little cut, I bet it'll be gone soon."
"Don't blame me when the thing finds you first," Dean said with a snort before he glanced at Sam to see if he was ready to go.
"I dare it to try," Runa said, grinning a bit. She glanced at Kyra to see who her friend was tagging along with. She didn't usually make Kyra go with her, not when she was feeling a bit more Hellspawn than usual.
Sam just nodded and made sure they had their weapons ready. |
Kyra looked at her, shrugged, and made a brief shooing motion for her to go with Dean. Clearly she needed someone who was a bit more able to relate just then.
Runa paused for just a moment, and then nodded, going to catch up with Dean.
Gabriel watched with a raised eyebrow. "Trouble in paradise?" he asked, looking at Kyra. |
"No, she just needs to work off some steam." Kyra shrugged. "Happens to both of us in different ways." She rolled her shoulders and shook her head.
Dean glanced back at her but didn't comment, instead giving her time to catch up as he headed towards the reported tracks. |
"Is that so?" Gabriel said. "I'd imagine she has some steam to work off, what with her former bed partner now off-limits."
Runa sped up a bit to catch up, although she did keep an eye on their surroundings. |
Kyra shrugged. "I suppose so. This will be good for her." She started walking, glancing at Sam since apparently the three of them were in a group. Cas had gone after the other two.
Dean kept an eye out as well, looking for the tracks or any other signs of the thing. |
"You know, I never did ask," Gabriel said casually as their group headed out as well. "What's the story with the two of you?"
"The two of us?" Kyra shrugged. "We met a while back, figured out what each other is. The first few times we met we didn't really get along, and then she suggested we work together. Easier to stay alive if you've got someone watching your back, right? So we started that." She paused for a moment. "It took a while for us to start living together. A while in Hell for her, and a while running for me."
"I see," Gabriel said, uncharacteristically serious. The explanation made him think for a while, because what could a few stints in Hell have done to the girl he was letting his brother hang around with? Dean didn't count, Dean was special. But the antichrist girl wasn't.
Kyra noticed that but didn't press him yet, for the moment focusing on finding the creature. But later on, she'd find out what had Gabriel thinking so hard.
Sam wasn't paying much attention to the conversation. Instead, he was looking for the creature. He stopped abruptly when he saw what looked like massive tracks on the ground. Apparently, they were going the right way.
Kyra noticed them as well and paused, crouching down to study them.
"Well, they're not bear, they're not right for that," she said. "They're closer to a wolf, but still, not quite right. Not a big cat either." She tapped her fingers against her knees. "I'm not quite sure what it is." |
