The things were about as large as his clawed hand, and quick too, but they had a limited place to run and nowhere at all to hide. Meison lunged after the white one, catching it in his claw and biting down on it in an instant. His sharp teeth went through its tough scales too easily, and almost bit it completely in half. this he followed with the striped one, and one of the rarer orange-pink ones. The last he left, admiring its quickness, before returning to Julian to hear his words. "N-no! No..." He didn't feel good at that half-accusation. He didn't hate anyone, except the tappers and screamers and loiters and flashers, the jeering faces in the less-than-intelligent crowd. Those were the ones he hated. Julian wasn't like them, he had no reason to hate the human. "I don't." He sighed. "I don't hate you. I'm sorry if it came off like that. I just... I was just... tired." Blaming something other than himself. It was natural for him. Meison drifted to the last angelfish and put his hand to it. By now it seemed to sense little danger and nipped at his claw. |
Relief swamped through him. "Thank god, I really didn't know what I was going to do if you did ..." It would have been horrible! Julian smiled though, knowing that everything would be alright... For him. Meison was another matter entirely, caged as he was.
His cell phone rang, making the human frown. Julian lifted the contraption from his pocket and looked hopeful as he listened to the voice on the other end. Once the conversation was over, he hung up and put the phone away. "Tomorrow you're in for a treat... The park is closed to visitors, and because of that they don't mind bringing you over to one of the large pools outside." |
Meison stared at the human, at the thing in his hand. A lot of humans seemed to have one, and they talked into it incessantly. Mostly about him when they were in front of his tank. They all seemed to make similar yet annoying sounds... if he thought back, he could remember someone calling it a 'cell phone'. A device to talk to others, then, by the way Julian used it. As he put it away, Meison approached cautiously. "Outside...?" He asked. "Outside, in a bigger one? Like around the ocean?" If he recalled, Julian had made a comment on a large outside pool. But he'd said it wasn't near the ocean and didn't have decorations. "Does it have sand? I like the way it looks on the ground..." Maybe that was too much to ask for. He was getting out tomorrow, and that was definitely going to be a treat. But how they would manage it was a question he didn't want to ask. |
"I have no idea if there's sand, and the ocean ... It is quite a ways away. But even so, it's outside and yeah, a lot bigger then the one here." He could go and check everything out once his shift was over. A thought, disturbing and full of hope all at the same time struck him. Perhaps if he looked at how Meison was moved closely enough, he could figure out a way to get him back to the ocean. Sadly, that would have to wait.
|
Meison smiled, for a moment, before he realized one could easily see his crooked, long, gar-like teeth, and he snapped his mouth closed entirely. "I, um... That'd be nice. And no one would be there to see me?" He distinctly recalled Julian saying the park would be closed. If so, did that mean closed to all visitors? Most of the people who worked here? That was a help, really. And maybe he'd be able to get out of the water for a while. Maybe it'd have a flat surface above the water. Meison wasn't sure how these scales would react to being out of water so long, if they would dry or shed. But it would be nice. |
Was Meison smiling? He didn't think he'd ever see the day when the merman would have such an expression. But alas it disappeared all too quickly. "After they've moved you, I'll be the only one there." The park was going to be closed after all. He was looking forward to the time spent alone with the merman. Maybe he could ask more questions, and get to know his friend better.
No one else would be around to hear their conversation. Julian looked forward to that most of all. "What kind of fish would you like for tomorrow?" Always with the fish .. It almost made Julian wonder if he was trying to bribe his way into Meison's affection. |
Julian would be the only one there...? He breathed in as if breathing in a whiff of clean, cool water or air. Well, that would be good. He'd be able to feel more free, and with this beautiful human around, he could rest just a little easier. He was so different, strange, a thing Meison liked to look at. He was like a living piece of art, a sculpture come to life. If he could Meison would immortalize him. If he could, he'd bring him into the ocean. But Meison was a monster, and nowhere near the ocean. Maybe one day... Glancing up to the human, he shook his head. "Ah... You call it caviar. Fish eggs, of a type. Sturgeon, specifically. I... It's been so long since I've had the chance to even catch a sturgeon, let alone collect their eggs..." He lowered his head in thought. It was in surplus underwater, in the city.. |
Sometimes, most of the time, Julian wondered what went through Meison's mind. Maybe tomorrow he'd ask. For now, the mention of caviar was enough to make him choke on his own saliva. "That stuff's expensive! It's like this .. delicacy up here on land. Damn, you've got some mighty refined taste..." Julian had to shake his head as he thought of how much of his paycheck was going to go to feeding the man-fish treats. Well, if it helped Meison's imprisonment be more bearable, then who was he to argue with it?
Julian did catch himself wondering if the merman could walk on land. That would make getting him to the sea so much easier. It was just a twenty minute drive away, and Julian's car was just outside. Explanations abounded for Meison's strange appearance, and Julian already had ideas about how to divert attention from the other man. That was something else he needed to ask. |
Meison shook his head, looking confused. "Expensive?" He asked. "How could that be? It's so plentiful! Don't humans look hard enough?" Pregnant fish and whales were everywhere in the water, one simply had to do a little searching. But the way Julian acted made him feel that this might be coming from his own pocket. That maybe he couldn't afford to keep finding Meison exactly what he wanted. He lunged forward, pressing himself against the glass. "Y-you don't have to..." He started. "You, ah... You might find... starfish. They're to the east, in tide pools at the edge of this city. Not a long walk, honestly... They get trapped when the tide goes out and..." Was he actually thinking about someone else? The thought made him snicker, but little else. |
He was startled to say the least. Meison's sudden action had made Julian jump, but now he was shaking his head trying not to laugh. It seemed like the merman really did care, if only a little, about his keeper's welfare. Tilting his head, Julian's emerald eyes traveled over the sea being with fondness. "It's alright, I don't mind finding the sturgeon eggs for ya." Meison had seemed like he wanted the delicacy so much.
Absentmindedly, the young man lifted a hand to press it against the glass where one of Meison's shoulders lay. It'd have been nice if he could actually have given his friend's shoulder a squeeze. "The starfish'll be for next time, promise." A bucket and some salt water were all Julian was sure to need for that venture. He knew he was going to feel horrible though, going out there and knowing that Meison was stuck behind glass. |
Meison furrowed his nonexistent brow, but nodded regardless. If the human thought he could do it, who was he to stop him? It was on him if he wasted his money when Meison gave him a choice! But... He reached up, to where Julian's hand rested, and put his against the glass. His was longer, and tipped with those ugly, curved black claws. His greenish, scaly skin in comparison to this dark, beautifully tan, soft skin. A treasure. He nodded in agreement. "If you... it's your decision." He said finally. "I'll not try to change your mind." Taking his hand away, Meison drifted back and went around to the angelfish. It darted away, though he followed it. |
Julian's breath caught as Meison lifted his palm to rest so near his own.
If only the glass wasn't there, if only so many things were different. The young man caught himself thinking impossible things, and shook his head to chase the thoughts away. No, it would never happen... Besides, thinking like that was way too soon after so little time. "It makes you happy," murmured the young man as he turned away. He couldn't spend all his time with Meison, though the merman was his main responsibility there were still other things around the building he needed to do. Julian was still learning too. Today he learned about the sea surrounding the area and its many creatures, though people didn't mention Meison. The merman was a mystery to everyone, save perhaps his keeper. |
When he looked back, he found Julian had gone. And when the lights started going out, he felt even more alone. There was a loneliness that settled in at the silence now in the quiet tank, and those around him, and even with the angelfish still floating about, possibly beginning to grow hungry, Meison felt as if everyone in the world had vanished. A feeling long known to him these past few years, but now magnified. Nothing here could talk to him when Julian was gone. Everyone seemed curious and watchful and endlessly amazed but no one seemed to want to take time with him, except that strangely beautiful man. Strangely beautiful, like so many oddities of the sea. As if he were from the ocean, just more adapted to the human world. Meison liked that, and as he decided to sleep, curl up on the top of the rock, he put the struggling angelfish out of its misery. |
The hours passed slowly, the lecture dragging on though it was fascinating. Julian was almost glad to be released and on his way home. It wasn't long before he'd eaten supper and gone through his evening routine. Soon he too was sleeping, dreaming of the sea. Somehow Meison made his way into the young man's mental landscape that night, and a welcome intrusion it was.
The next day, Julian was whistling as he entered the aquarium, but stopped in his tracks when he saw that Meison was nowhere in sight. It took a few questions, but he found the pool he'd spoken so much of with Meison already in it. The person watching over the merman left with a sigh of relief when the sea creature's real caretaker arrived. For his part, Julian was glad to see the sandy bottom of the pool and even happier to know that Meison would be able to swim about and stretch his limbs like he hadn't been able to for a while. Whistling again, the young man settled down at the edge of the pool and let his bare feet dangle in the water while he played with a can absentmindedly. |
Very early morning came with a team of men and women. They had lowered a cage into the water and instructed him to get in so that he could be transported to the larger tank outside. Though it looked like the one he'd been captured in, Meison did so quickly, closing the door himself and feeling a little refreshed when the air hit his body. He didn't easily move when they hefted him down the steps and through a few halls he recognized, and then, finally, outside. The sunrise was beautiful from where he was, between four large men carrying the cage, and as they stepped out onto a walkway, he looked down and saw a massive, beautiful pool of water. Its bottom was wavy and soft to the eyes. When he was slid into it, Meison darted through the water finally, rolling through the cooler water and leaping out from point to point. He might even be able to jump right out of the pool, but that would mean a hard, rough landing. The fresh, non-circulated air was a delight on his scaly skin, and for a moment he almost felt as if he were back to normal. But the reflection that sometimes stared back at him kept him grounded. When Julian arrived, Meison jumped from the water again and darted to the platform on which he sat. Letting himself hang halfway in the pool, he studied the can Julian was playing with. "What is that?" He asked curiously. |
Wordlessly, the young man pulled the top from the can and held it out to his friend with a smile. Tiny little eggs filled the container. Julian had tried to find fresher, but all he could afford was this. "I hope this doesn't disappoint, Meison." He wanted to reach out and touch the merman's greenish scales, to know whether or not they were dry or slimy. Neither, probably.
Julian was more curious then afraid as he shifted nearer his friend. The only fear he had was causing any harm to Meison. He was so protective of the merman, wanting nothing more then to see him safe and happy. The feeling only grew with every moment spent in Meison's company. Today was no different, in fact it was even better then most. A refreshingly cool breeze ruffled Julian's blonde to brown hair, making him smile and sigh as he leaned back to let his hands support him as he gazed at his friend. |
He had kept true to his promise. What kind of person did that? What kind of beautiful human wanted to waste time on someone like him? Meison took the can and studied the contents---they weren't sturgeon, but he recognized them as tuna. More common, perhaps, for those on land. Without the use of his fingers, Meison had to rely on his tongue to scoop some of the eggs from their container. The salt was heavy, and a briny scent wafted up and caught on the wind. Regardless of what fish they came from it was nice to eat them again, and he shook his head quickly. "No, not disappointing at all." He assured the human, and set the can on the platform as Julian sat back a bit. Diving down, he twisted slightly and brought his tail up out of the water, flipping it at the human and darting into the center of the pool. It felt good, and... oddly familiar... to play. Play because now he had the room. Because he was outside and he didn't feel sluggish and tired anymore. The deep pool let him dive down a bit, but never let him escape the sides of the area, which were made of such reflective glass. |
A smile made Julian's lips curl up as he was splashed. He laughed, delighting in how happy Meison seemed to be now that he had more room and was outside. Maybe he could try talking the marina people into giving the merman a bigger tank. It couldn't be good for Meison's mental health to be so cooped up all the time.
Julian forced the thoughts away as he stood and removed most of his clothing. All that was left were a pair of swim trunks which ballooned up comically as he jumped into the water. Grumbling about it, the young man shoved the fabric into the water until it was soaked, and then he dove. Eyes open wide, he tried to fined Meison and when he did, reached out to brush a hand playfully against the merman's scaly skin. He wanted to play, to be part of what made the other man happy. The human knew his thoughts threaded dangerous ground, but he just couldn't help himself. Even thoughts of lips meeting lips, despite fangs and spiky spines, did nothing to deter this odd kind of attraction. Perhaps, it would be good to tell Meison today. |
Meison couldn't help a true laugh when Julian's swim clothes acted like a buoy as he jumped into the water, and lowered himself even as Julian took to the water without breathing equipment. The other watcher, the man that had been kept to watch over Meison while Julian wasn't here, had hardly even spoken to him. He'd watched the merman wander through the new environment, but had pretended not to hear what he said while underwater and said he'd been busy when he was above the water. Why was Julian so kind when everyone else was so harsh or dismissive or... horrible? He twitched, when a hand brushed him, and arced over the human quickly. That was unexpected. He darted around the young man and grabbed the hem of his shorts a bit, tugging him one way then going the other. He'd become too energetic while he was locked in that tiny tank. Now it was as if he were back home and playing with others. While he was still who he was originally. He didn't like this, but at least Julian could keep him company. Keep him company and... be a friend. Julian didn't care what he looked like, didn't back away or ignore him. Others might flock to him had they seen his original appearance. They would be amazed and sighing and gasping. Though Julian seemed to so obviously overlook the outside appearance. As he drifted by the wall, he studied himself hard. Ugly... |
He twisted and turned, eyes searching for the merman as Meison flitted about in the water. Julian had to push up to the surface and took a deep breath before diving down again.
Meison was staring at himself in the glass, something that worried Julian. The merman hated his appearance so much. There was nothing Julian could do about that, but offer distraction. With quick movements, he swam forth and hugged the merman carefully again. Then quick as it had begun, he backed away and grabbed Meison's hand. Julian tugged at the clawed appendage and pointed up to the surface insistently. |
There was that arm around him again, cautious though present, and Meison didn't have to look around to see Julian there---he saw the human in the reflection on the glass. Light-and-dark hair floated about his head, and even in the water one could see how beautifully green his eyes were. He floated in the water as if he'd done it his whole life, and when he finally turned to face Julian, the human caught his hand and seemed to want to surface. Somehow Meison kept forgetting Julian couldn't breathe under water. He did as requested, though, surfacing and brushing the feeler-like hair back and away from his face as Julian did the same. "What happened?" He asked, unknowingly concerned. "I didn't harm you, did I? Did I do something...?" What if he'd scraped against him too hard, clawed him? That had to hurt, didn't it? He was sure it would, his scales were rough and his dorsal fin was spiked, obviously not the kind of thing a human should even get near. |
Julian smiled, shaking water and hair from his eyes. "No that's not it at all. I'm fine, really." For some reason the concern in Meison's voice made his heart flutter oddly. Enough of that! Such thoughts weren't exactly the reason why he'd tugged the merman up so insistently.
As he began to speak, haltingly, the young man was glad to know they were in the cool water and in the way of the incoming breeze. It helped calm Julian's heart, when otherwise it would have been beating at a crazy pace. "Yesterday, you wanted to know why I watched you. Well .. I'm kind of attracted to you." Now he was blushing, averting his eyes and looking into the water at Meison's eel like tail. Curiosity had turned to intrigue, and then into attraction before he knew it. He liked Meison's somewhat contrary personality, it made things so lively when otherwise life was dull. |
Meison shook his head quickly, as if trying to rid himself of an annoyance. That couldn't be right... Julian had to be playing on Meison's fear of being eternally hated or feared or undesirable, which was a sick thing to do. But the human didn't seem to be that kind of person. No, he was always genuine. Always so patient. While the others didn't listen to him or ask him what he liked or preferred or even if he might be okay, Julian went about and spent his own money on Meison, even if he couldn't afford it. But still, this had to be the result of... delusion, of some sort. He drifted slightly backward. "Ah... Are you sure... you're okay?" He insisted. "Sure you aren't too cold...? Or perhaps held your breath too long...? Maybe swallowed salt water?" How could anyone find this mess of a monstrosity 'attractive'? Ask him! No. Stop being so ridiculous. I'm not being ridiculous! You'll never know, then! Maybe it's something else. How stupid... Well, fine, be that way. Live forever in a cesspool of your own personal disgust. Meison shook his head. The voice was incessant, like a prodding child, but it had a point. "W-what... Uhm, what do you mean...? I mean, by... by what you said?" That was less than smooth, but Meison had been put on the spot. It was all he could get out. |
The uncertain reaction had been expected in a way. Meison's appearance filled him with such negative feelings that Julian could tell it lay at the root of the merman's questions. Diplomacy needed to be used now, more so then flattery. The human forced his eyes up, tilting his head fetchingly as his limbs waved slowly in the water to keep him afloat.
"Your personality, I like it. Sure you may be demanding and annoying sometimes, but you know how to make things interesting. Meison, you can be kind without knowing it too. I have to admit, you're kind of cute when you don't know what to say..." Oh this was so embarrassing! Julian didn't really want to face what his words wrought. Meison's unpredictability. He dove, seeking to escape. Cool water slipped over his head as the human pushed himself through the water. It was hard to say how far he'd gone before he reached out to run fingers against cement. Julian grab the edge of the wall, and pulled himself up and out of the water quickly. His back was to the merman, as he knelt, thinking. With a sigh, Julian turned to peek at Meison. True, the merman certainly didn't meet any conventional standards of beauty, but even so there was so much more to the sea being then what he looked like. |
Meison had worked to bite his lip, but the teeth went a little too far and he tasted blood. Julian had turned away too quickly to reply to immediately, though Meison had no idea what to say now. He'd grown up knowing just what to say and when to say it---that was the mark of a royal, someone meant to lead, someone that knew how to reply to even the most difficult questions or the hardest riddles, or keep their head in a tense or awkward situation. Only Meison had never been in this situation before. Personality? What kind of personality did he have? His curse had 'copied that personality into physical being', so the old maid had said. He had an obviously ugly personality. He'd paused too long, though, it seemed, as Julian had left and crossed the pool by the time Meison had come back to reality. Had he really meant that? All of it? Meison was annoying and demanding---of course he was! That was why no one else wanted to take on the responsibility of handling him, keeping him relatively at ease. But Julian had. Such a kind, sweet personality, he seemed always eager to please, went out of his way to make sure Meison was comfortable despite the merman's insistence that he was ugly in every way and didn't want to be around anyone that could even begin to form an opinion on him. He drifted forward, following Julian's original path and coming to a stop at his feet, where the cement platform was. He still hardly knew what to say, but tried anyway: "I don't... know how you might be able to see such a likable personality." He admitted. "I've been nothing but sour and angry and bitter since my capture, since my transformation. I scare away everyone... I hate being around people. And being around someone so..." He stopped himself, and swallowed hard. "Being around someone so beautiful outside and in is intimidating to me now. I don't see how you can enjoy being around me, when I've only berated you and tried to scare you away." He leaned up, onto the cement and used it as a bed, feeling tired and misplaced. He wanted a source of comfort now, but didn't dare touch the human for fear of harming him accidentally. |
