Things slowly settled back into a routine, which is why, a week later, Elena thought nothing of Sherlock being at the Yard again. She just sighed and went to go get the paperwork.
Sherlock waited impatiently at her desk as she went to get the case file for him. Lestrade had promised this would be a good one, and Sherlock wanted to see if the detective inspector was right.
Elena went to get the paperwork from Lestrade, and paused in the door of his office when he called her back.
"So, are we still on for Saturday?" he asked, looking at her. "Of course. I'll see you Saturday at noon." Elena grinned, which he returned, before she headed back to her desk. |
Sherlock blinked at the exchange.
"Saturday?" he asked. "What is going on on Saturday?" |
"Our weekly stress relief," Elena said, handing over the files to him.
Sherlock accepted the file, but now he was preoccupied with Elena and Lestrade.
"And you're going with Lestrade?" he asked, incredulous. |
"Yes," Elena replied patiently. "I'm going with Lestrade, same as I do every week and have for the past few months."
Sherlock made a face, and then turned and left with the file in hand. He could go over it just as well back at Baker Street and besides, John was there.
Elena blinked at that. Well, he was certainly in a mood now. But she just shook her head at him and let him go.
Sherlock had worked himself into a frenzy by the time he'd gotten back to the flat. Yanking off his coat and scarf, he flung the case file down onto the coffee table and began pacing the sitting room.
John heard him and emerged cautiously to see what was the matter.
"Sherlock?" he asked, watching his friend pace. |
"I don't understand," Sherlock growled. "Why? Why Lestrade? Why would she spend so much time with him? Is it normal?"
Ah. Elena again. John shook his head. "Is she spending much time with him outside of work?" he asked, watching Sherlock pace.
"Apparently so," Sherlock replied. "Weekly, from what I understand." He glanced at John and then resumed pacing. "I don't understand, why Lestrade? His divorce has yet to finalize, and apparently they spend every Saturday together."
John shrugged. "Maybe he's a good ear for her to rant to?" he suggested. "Besides, what does the divorce have to do with them spending time together?"
"Come now, John, you're not that thick," Sherlock said, giving John a Look. He kept pacing. "It certainly sounded like they were planning some sort of date."
John had considered that, but he had wanted to see if Sherlock had. Which, of course, he had. Which was the real reason he was upset. Sherlock Reading was a fine and long-studied art.
"Maybe," he said. "Have you asked her about it?" |
Sherlock looked briefly baffled. No, it had not occurred to him, but he'd learned not to say those kinds of things out loud. Those were the sorts of things that made it to John's blog, alongside the terrible Solar System oversight from a while back. So he just grumbled under his breath and kept pacing.
John shook his head. "I can text her and ask her about it," he offered.
"If you must," Sherlock replied. Abruptly, he stopped pacing and sat down, picking up the case file. He wasn't going to think about it any more for the moment, he had better things to do with his time and intellect.
John shook his head a bit and let Sherlock settle in to his work, texting Elena to see if he could find out what this was about before his roommate went into full-on pout mode.
Sherlock did try to settle into his work (and Lestrade was right, the case was rather intriguing) but he found his focus kept drifting to Elena and Lestrade. Well, if they wanted to spend time together, he would bloody well let them. He ignored the strange, uncomfortable ache in his chest at that.
John didn't manage to get hold of Elena, so he texted Abby instead.
Is there anything romantic between Elena and Lestrade? |
Abby blinked at the message.
Not as far as I know. Just coworkers. And they go out to the shooting range every weekend. |
Ah, that's what it is. Sherlock is getting jealous. John grinned. Now that he knew what was going on, it made more sense. Although there was still the surprising matter of Sherlock being jealous in the first place.
