⚝*☆ Origami Star Tutorial ☆*⚝ (Image heavy!)

So a few people told me they don't know how to make origami stars, or that they had tried before and failed. Well let me tell you, they are the easiest thing to make! So I've made a little photo tutorial so you can learn to make these little stars yourself. I made a lot of photos, but that's because I wanted to be as detailed as possible for people who might be confused. Sometimes I have multiple pictures for just one step, so don't look at the amount of pictures and feel overwhelmed! These take something like 30 seconds to make - it's nothing. So here we go!

Once you get the hang of it, these are great to make while listening to podcasts, music, or TV shows that don't require you to look very much (like the news). I made a good half of these while listening to Welcome to Night Vale!

If you have any questions or are confused by any of my steps, don't hesitate to ask me! Although I will say that origami instructions tend to look very confusing when you read them, but go much better if you work along with them. So if any step seems confusing, just try to follow the tut first, it might all make sense then!

Thank you master cherry for you instructions! I was finally able to make a star. :)

Ling 09-14-2013 04:49 AM

I've been making these for years...and have managed to teach the technique to a few people too. I like the wording you used in the instructions, made for an amusing read. [:)]

Cherry Who? 09-14-2013 05:10 AM

Kiari - Hooray! [boogie] I'm glad I could teach you something new!

Ling - Thanks! It was difficult to word at times, so I hope it wasn't too weirdly worded. [:?]

Just as a heads up, I'm about to leave for the weekend. So if anyone has any questions or concerns about making these, I won't be able to answer them for a few days. I'll do so once I get back, though! And anyone else is feel free to assist anyone who is having trouble. [:)]

OMG YOU CAN JUST TRIM THE PAPER. Why didn't that occur to me all those times I cursed the long end into a crumply mass of hate? "It doesn't fit so I must be doing something wrong, I'll try shoving it into that little slot even harder."
[lol]

Cool tutorial Cherry, thanks! :D

Cherry Who? 09-15-2013 08:31 PM

Oh god, I think I'd have about 12 stars if I relied on the end being the right length on its own. @_@ I consider it a twist of good luck when I don't need to trim it!

Glad I could help!

dragoness129 09-16-2013 05:02 AM

Those are so adorably cute! ♥
I love them!

Cherry Who? 09-16-2013 08:11 AM

Me too! And they're so easy to make, it's like the only cute thing I can create. [lol]

Seito: would love this.
She's always making origami paper dolls xD

BellyButton 09-17-2013 07:59 PM

Cherry, I just tried your tut and I was successful! I'm trying to figure out why this tutorial worked for me and the others didn't, and I think part of it is that you don't begin with an exact measurement - previously I think I spent too much time trying to get the paper strips exact, and making sure that each fold was exact, and it was stressful and didn't produce a good result. Your tutorial is nice because it feels forgiving, which is something origami is usually not, in my experience. [lol]

Just chopped off the bottom of a piece of junk mail without measuring a damn thing and it worked fine, woo! Behold your godchild, pizza flyer starlet:

Cherry Who? 09-17-2013 10:25 PM

Woohoo! I'm so glad it helped you! [boogie] Origami stars are definitely pretty forgiving. The strips can't be too wide, but how long they are doesn't matter so much since it doesn't make a difference in the end if you have to wrap it around an extra time or two. And I have absolutely no patience for precision cutting, so unless I'm buying special paper just for origami, the project had best be okay with me eyeballing the proportions! [lol]

lunanuova 09-19-2013 05:23 PM

I want to try! I'll try right now. Are the strips of paper the width of an A4 paper?

BellyButton 09-19-2013 05:30 PM

The paper I used was that width. :D

lunanuova 09-19-2013 05:48 PM

I tried with the width but it was too short.. It seemed that there wasn't enough paper to squidge at the end. Although that may have more to do with how wide I made the strips.
I used thinner longer pieces and I've made 3 good ones!

Cherry Who? 09-19-2013 07:10 PM

Sorry, I really should have stated the measurements of the paper I was cutting from, huh? [lol] It was the standard 8x11ish (there might be a .5 in there somewhere) paper.
If your ends aren't quite long enough to make it to the next fold, just trim them so they'll go into the previous one. [:)]

lunanuova 09-19-2013 10:15 PM

Haha, I think we all use different measurements. It's just like time zones - confusing! I really like the stars, thanks for sharing your crafty idea, I am glad I now know how to make them! I have only tried with coloured sugar paper so far, so I don't know how different it would be using normal paper or other kinds of paper.
Now, what should I do with them.. [angel] Decorate something!

Cherry Who? 09-19-2013 10:44 PM

I've seen some people make garland from them, and I'd like to give that a try eventually. I'm not 100% on how it's done yet, but I think you just thread some string between the "arms" of the stars. A long needle would probably help. Then you'd probably want to knot the thread on either side of the star so it'd stay in place. Of course I put my stars in a jar, but they'd be neat in any vessel - bowls, glass dishes, clear vases, or maybe even scattered on a bookshelf.

I haven't heard of sugar paper before, that sounds interesting. If you take any pics of the stars you've made so far, I'd love to see them!

BellyButton 09-20-2013 02:02 AM

I strung up a couple of mine, they make a cute dangly thing. I might make some into earrings, since I don't have to worry about rain here. :D

Cherry Who? 09-20-2013 02:27 AM

If you get a chance to take a picture of your danglies ([lol]) I'd love to see! Share pics of the earrings, too, if you indeed make them. [eager]

I tried uploading this from my ipad so I hope it works. These were my first attempts!
Sugar paper is not as smooth as normal paper, it feels more recycled in texture.

Cherry Who? 09-20-2013 10:24 PM

They look cute! [:)]

[rofl][rofl] This made me laugh!

Cherry Who? 09-21-2013 02:19 AM

Thanks! [lol] I tried to keep a serious tone throughout, but couldn't help myself. [ninja]

Cora 09-21-2013 07:44 PM

lol, no I think the tone is perfect, its light without being over the top.

bubblemei 09-22-2013 02:51 PM

Oh this is very cool! Thank you so much for the tutorial! I'm going to try and make some of these...
