"That was fast," Autumn said as she picked up her phone. "What's up, you usually don't call me on the official line."
"That's because we've got a minor problem over here and we need someone who can phase through ten or fifteen feet of solid steel," Alexis said. "ASAP would be appreciated."
For a moment, Autumn was a bit speechless.
"What did they do that they need that?" she asked. "I have someone in mind, but I'm just curious." |
"Tony," Alexis said, her voice dark. "He got himself locked in the Hulk room and can't figure out how to get out again because there were malfunctions in the security panels. And the air vents going into the room are too small even for Barton."
Autumn bit her lip for a moment, trying desperately to suppress her laughter.
"Alright," she said. "I'll make a couple calls, and call you back in a few with details." |
"Great, thanks." Alexis hung up with a sigh and rubbed her temples briefly.
"Barton, I see what you're doing, stop trying to sneak into the vents and pretend you weren't pestering me earlier." |
There was a beat of silence, and then, "You're no fun." One of the ceiling tiles opened up and Clint dropped down onto the floor.
"I would be a lot more fun if Stark didn't pull stuff like this on me." Alexis sighed. "Besides, I don't understand why you had to buzz me every twenty seconds."
"Sue me, I was bored," Clint said. "Can't exactly play with my new toys if the guy making them is stuck in the Hulk room."
"You want to play with new toys? You can help me keep an eye on whoever Autumn sends over, then," Alexis said promptly.
"You're going to take my toys so I'll babysit?" Clint asked incredulously. "That's cruel and unusual, it really is."
"Coulson recommended it," Alexis said with a bit of a grin. "Besides, don't you want to get Tony out faster so he can go build you new toys?"
"I don't want to have to babysit anyone," Clint said. "That's not my job."
"It is for the next hour or so," Alexis said, glancing at her phone when it rang again and picking up. "What've you got for me?"
"Charles agreed to send Kitty Pryde," Autumn said. "She's on her way. Apparently, she's got a tag-along, as well, so be ready for that. Some newbies to the group, apparently."
"Lovely." Alexis shook her head. "I'm sure I'll be fine. Got an ETA for me or just whenever they arrive?"
"ETA about an hour," Autumn said. "Bank on that. And tell Stark it's probably a good idea to feed the person rescuing him from the Hulk room, since he's dragging her out here through dinner time." She grinned a bit.
"I'll make sure it's taken care of." Alexis sighed. "You're a lifesaver. Coffee's on me tomorrow." She hung up and looked at Clint. "Go let Tony know he's got about an hour."
"I'll hold you to it," Autumn said, grinning. "Call text me when Kitty gets there so I know she arrived."
"That quick?" Clint asked, surprised. |
"Will do," Alexis told Autumn. To Clint, she added, "Yeah, this is what happens when things go right and I'm not pestered by other people." She gave him a sharky grin. "Now, I am going to call Coulson and tell him it's being taken care of, you are going to go tell Tony to sit tight, and remind him that I will have paperwork for him to sign once he's out as punishment."
Clint cackled wickedly at the thought of inflicting Tony with paperwork and sauntered out of the room again.
"That sounded evil," Autumn said from the other end of the line. "Anyways, text me, and I'll get there when I can. Technically I'm supposed to be there when my division works with another one." |
"Yeah, I know. Don't worry, you'll likely miss out on all the fun, but I'm going to get the paperwork prepared while I wait." Alexis huffed. "I'll see you when you get here." She hung up and went to go get the paperwork and wait for Kitty to show up.
Almost an hour later, Kitty and Autumn (because Kitty had texted the agent, herself) both showed up at the tower. Curiously, Kitty's tag-along wasn't some new kid; apparently, she had been given Pietro Maximoff to look after. Autumn made a mental note to ask about it later.
"So what's going on?" Kitty asked, looking around. "I was told Stark happened, but not many details. Just that I have to pull him through a wall." |
"Pretty much. He was trying to work on the Hulk room and got himself locked in." Alexis motioned for them to follow, heading down to the appropriate floor, where Clint was supposed to be keeping track of Tony lest the genius try to blast his way out or something.
Pietro was looking around, taking in the sight curiously. He hadn't been to SI before, and doubted he would be again. So for the moment he was amusing himself. |
"Lovely," Kitty said, following Alexis. Autumn followed them both, although she kept an eye on Pietro. She'd heard of him, of course, but she hadn't heard when he joined the X-men. That was probably going to be in the meeting the next day.
"I don't think we've met yet," she said to him. "Agent Autumn Lennox, SHIELD liaison between the X-men and everyone else." Clint was perched near an access hatch, a space too small to crawl through but still led into the Hulk room. Clearly, he was giving Tony a running commentary of everything going on. |
