Indeed, it took Crystal only five minutes to be ready to go, and she rejoined him in the kitchen. "Alright, lead the way."
Remy grinned and slung his bag over his shoulder.
"Let's go," he said. He led her outside, and started off towards the freight station. |
Crystal followed him, keeping an eye out as they walked. It was partially habit by now.
Luck was with them that day: Remy managed to find a freighter that was heading south, with one of the cars unlocked and partially empty.
"In ya get, chere," he said, gesturing to the train car. |
Crystal hopped in, looking around. Mostly there were just shipping crates in there, so she found a comfortable spot to sit and set her things down.
Remy set his own bag down as well, and settled down just as the train started moving.
"Not a moment too soon, chere," he said, grinning. |
"Good thing." Crystal grinned and settled in there.
Remy stretched a bit and pulled out a deck of cards.
"Fancy a game t' pass th' time?" he asked. |
"Depends what you want to play." Crystal did shuffle so she was facing him, though.
"I know most games, chere," Remy said, grinning. "Take your pick."
"Go Fish." Crystal blushed. "I'm no good at poker."
"Got a long train ride ahead," Remy pointed out with a grin. "Perfect time to practice."
"Only if we're not playing for anything, otherwise you'd clear me out of what little I have." Crystal grinned a bit.
"Nah, bad form t' swindle a travelin' companion out of their money," Remy said, grinning as well. "Nothin' t' fear there."
"Good." Crystal paused. "And no strip poker, either." She couldn't keep the grin entirely off her face, though, as much as she tried.
"Way t' ruin a man's fun, chere," Remy retorted, teasing. "Promise, just teachin' today."
"Alright." Crystal settled in, motioning for him to go ahead. She figured this would take a while, after all.
It did indeed take a while. It took them almost all the way to New Orleans to teach her how to properly play poker, and they'd switched trains twice. By the time they got there, though, Remy was pretty pleased with her skill.
"Haven't given up on me yet?" Crystal asked, only half-teasing, as they hopped off the train in New Orleans.
"Not at all, chere," Remy said, grinning. He hopped off the train easily, and adjusted his bag on his shoulder. "Glad you came this far?"
"So far," Crystal agreed, looking around. "It's nice to get out and about and be anonymous for a little while. Sometimes it's a bit much, staying with the children." She shrugged, absently shoving her hands in her pockets. "Sometimes I worry I'll hurt one of them on accident."
"You're not th' only one," Remy said. "Gambit too, at times." It was a constant worry in the back of his head, whenever he visited Charles and Erik. It wasn't so prominent that Charles picked up on it, but the worry was there.
Crystal shook her head. "You wouldn't, you've got much more control than I do," she said, bumping into him. "Besides, you've got your escape routes open all the time. Smart man."
"You'd be surprised at how often something slips through," Remy said. "There were a few real close calls before. Kept a good distance out after a few, t' give Erik some time to calm down."
"Because Erik is the rabid guard dog of the family," Crystal said with a chuckle. "Yeah, makes sense. Still, though, wouldn't have guessed you've slipped before."
