I think the most important part is... motivation?
Something to push you through churning out words without thinking tooo much.

As for dialogue.
I prefer dialogue because, it seems direct to its meaning.
When I was small, I started off with dialogue.

that's pretty sweet. I haven't finished a novel yet. That's great that you did. Are you going to do anything with that one?
Maybe you just need to type quote more to get more in the habit of using them? I don't know. Writers have all sorts of weird systems and quirks about writing though, so I can't say it's too strange.

If it helps any, my first year, I struggled and barely hit 50k in the 30 days. I just had characters, last year, who just wouldn't shut up.
And even doing that, that would make me hate it even more... I just hate quoting. >.< Believe me, I've tried to get myself to like it, but I can't.

As for doing more, I do want to edit, and I've got friends who have read tiny parts of it, and do like it. :] It's pretty good and I am proud of it. I just have to get myself to edit. >.< Things have come up that kept me from being able to sit down for any good chunk of time and actually start editing, so that is still unedited, last year's novel. You're a machine! I'm with Kat over here.

Do y'all have any tips for newbies? Xu mentioned using plot cards earlier... is there anything you've found that worked better for you?

Yes, in a week. I'm a legend back home. [yes] They won't shut up about how fast I type - no one wants to do word wars against me as pretty much 90% of the time, I win. [sweat] I don't really know how I do it most of the time.

Just write, don't be afraid to suck. Because honestly, that's how I do it. Dare to suck. Don't use contractions, and just write and you can edit later. Do not edit. [yes] I know it's hard, I even struggle, but you will thank yourself later when you cross that finish line. It's all a pain to edit, but omg, it's so worth it to say that you managed to complete it. [yes]

xuvrette 10-18-2013 05:30 AM

We need a month solely for editing. XD

nemo.love_22 10-18-2013 05:52 AM

No, more than a month...

xuvrette 10-18-2013 06:01 AM

As long as it is dedicated for editing.

~LONGCAT~ 10-18-2013 06:47 PM

Ugh. is it fine that I'll just be working on something I've been trying to work on for years now?

I'm taking up the NaNoWriMo Challenge!
Username:~LONGCAT~
Intended Genre:realistic fiction
NaNoWriMo account name:Narret

Mythos 10-18-2013 07:16 PM

Absolutely, Long! It seems like a popular thing to do, actually [mrgreen]

nemo.love_22 10-18-2013 07:24 PM

Just as long as you don't count anything that you wrote before the 1st of November, you're all good. [yes]

xuvrette 10-18-2013 08:53 PM

What is realistic fiction genre?

Write everyday without fail, and hit or exceed the 1667 daily goal. There are reasons not to do this, and reasons are reasons, but you will want those words by the end of the month.

Do not edit.

Use a form of writing motivation that works for you. If you require fear, use Write Or Die on Evil + Kamikaze mode. If you require pictures of kittens, or puppies, or cupcakes, use WrittenKitten. Add ?search=puppy or ?search=cupcake to to the url to receive non-kittens. Set word count and begin.

Coffee is a thing that exists.

Make several backups of your novel. Sync it to the cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) You do not want to lose or accidentally delete your novel 20k in and have no way of getting it back. Hmmm, wonder how Kayxx knows that oddly specific piece of information...

Try to enjoy it. There is no reason to be miserable for 30 days if you don't have to be. (can also be read as: No reason to not add ninja-pirate-zombie-librarians if you really want to add ninja-pirate-zombie-librarians.)

Now get thee hence, and come the 31st of October at the strike of 12, write; and that unceasingly.

Kat Dakuu 10-18-2013 10:38 PM

the break down should be a month to write a novel. A year to edit it! XD

Nemo: you should finish editing it!
well, I never finish edits either....

I need to just write a novel like I do my rps. So quick and easy with noisy characters. I tried that in july camp though, but it ended up with me thinking deeply about my world and plot in the end. I would have very easily have gone past the 50k goal if I had a laptop for more than half of the month though...
I think doing short stories this time will not allow that. My ss's are a very different style.

~LONGCAT~ 10-18-2013 10:53 PM

Realistic fiction is something that could happen but didn't. So in my case it's a memoir of a character. Things like Bridget Jones diaries are realistic fiction, some argue that Sherlock Holmes is realistic fiction. Not fantasy, not sci fi, not mystery, just eh.

nemo.love_22 10-18-2013 11:19 PM

What bothers me is when people assume that all writers drink coffee... I can't drink coffee. I'm horribly allergic to caffeine.

xuvrette 10-19-2013 04:20 AM

I drink coffee fine, but I don't think it works as a 'energy' boost for me. :/

All of a sudden, I decided to sketch some buildings from my story.
THEN! I realised that I seemed to lost one piece of preliminary skecthes... T__T

nemo.love_22 10-19-2013 05:15 AM

No I mean, I physically can't have ANYTHING with caffeine. I'm allergic.

xuvrette 10-19-2013 05:47 AM

Yes, I understand what you meant.

If I am not mistaken... there are a lot of tea also have caffeine. You can't have tea too?

nemo.love_22 10-19-2013 06:26 AM

Answer: Herbal Teas. [yes]

xuvrette 10-19-2013 07:14 AM

Which indeed is limited choice, right?
I am not a tea or coffee person, so... I am not familiar with the different tea and coffee types. XD

Whichever way, herbal tea sounds more healthy anyway. Literally herbs, right?
Do they have strong flavour?

I had tried Chinese, japanese tea, and one or two general English tea(forget the names...) Most tea taste like water to me... Only Earl Grey have a strong 'fragrance'. Yet, I don't like that fragrance much.

nemo.love_22 10-19-2013 07:15 AM

My favorite - Mint, with honey as the sweetener.

xuvrette 10-19-2013 08:02 AM

I like mint sweets. Not the chewing gum that have to spit out at the end though.
Those crystal clear mint sweet... and my favourite chocolate extra flavour is with mint. <33

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 10-19-2013 08:55 AM

I'm really itching to give this a go this year. [eager]

nemo.love_22 10-19-2013 08:56 AM

Iku: Yes yes yes, do it!! [yes] You know you want to! [yes]

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 10-19-2013 09:05 AM

Haha, I do! [lol] I signed up to NaNo last year with the intentions of trying it then, but I'm not sure what happened. [oops]
But this year I'll at least try fo sho!

nemo.love_22 10-19-2013 11:00 AM

If anything keeps me from writing, it's going to be my classes this semester. >.< My school life is kinda insane right now.

xuvrette 10-19-2013 11:09 AM
