Kate had been to the little coffee shop before, and she waved at the barista before finding a pair of seats.
"I like this place," she said. "It's always nice and quiet here." |
Steve nodded. "Yeah. I like this place. It's always nice to come here." Plus the baristas all knew by now he just took black coffee.
Kate nodded.
"Agreed." She glanced over when the barista came over. "Extra milk, two sugars, caramel?" The barista nodded and made a note on her notepad, glanced at Steve, smiled, and went back to make the drinks. |
Steve settled in a bit to wait for the coffee. "You ever had the pie here?" he asked, looking at her.
"I get the cheesecake," Kate admitted, grinning. "I've never gotten the pie. Is it good?"
"The apple is very good," Steve said. "Chocolate's okay, strawberry is pretty good when they're in season. Banana cream is excellent here." He grinned, looking briefly embarrassed.
"Then maybe I'll have some pie instead of cheesecake tonight," Kate said, grinning. "If they're that good."
"They're pretty good. I've never tried the cheesecake here." Steve grinned briefly. "Sounds like we should switch orders."
"I think we should," Kate said, grinning. "You try the cheesecake, I'll try one of the pies. Sounds like a plan to me."
Steve grinned and nodded. He thanked the barista when she brought over their coffees.
Kate thanked her as well, noticing how the girl's wings fluttered a bit when Steve thanked her. Almost immediately, Kate felt a rush of possessiveness. She was the one there with him, after all, not the barista.
Steve hadn't even noticed at that point and took a sip of his coffee. Perfect, as always. Before the barista moved away, though, he caught her eye again quickly.
"By the way, I think we wanted a cheesecake, and..." He trailed off, looking at Kate to see which kind of pie she wanted. |
"Apple pie, please," Kate supplied. She grinned. "Figure I may as well try that one tonight."
Steve grinned and nodded. The barista nodded and moved back to the back to get their treats.
"Well, we'll see how things go." |
"I'm having fun so far," Kate said, smiling a bit. Her wings rustled a little to resettle some feathers.
Steve's wings rustled a bit as well, but he didn't preen or anything. Just caught the light a bit. "I'm glad you're having fun."
"What about you?" Kate asked. "Are you enjoying yourself?"
"I am," Steve said. "This is nice. Not stressful. I thought a date would be much more... anxious."
"No kidding," Kate said. "I went on a date once that I had to leave early because the guy gave me bad vibes. Something about him put me off, so I had to escape."
Steve nodded. "I had a date to go dancing once," he said quietly. "I didn't make it."
"I'm sorry," Kate said softly. "Did you ever make a rain-date for it?"
"No," Steve said quietly. "I never got a chance." He shrugged off the momentary melancholy and smiled. "But that was a long time ago."
"Well, I hope any other dates you have go better," Kate said. She didn't automatically say 'we', but she did kind of hope they hit it off well enough for more dates.
Steve smiled. "If they go like this, they will," he said, glancing at her, his wings fluttering a bit. He kind of hoped they'd have a second date too.
Kate couldn't help but blush a bit, her wings fluttering too. She was saved from answering, however, when the pie and cheesecake arrived.
