Tony shrugged.
"Living alone's not cheap these days," he responded. Hey, it was true, if not for him personally. But he knew for a fact that it was cheaper for Clint and Athena to live there than for them to live alone. |
"So you just happen to have a place where they can stay for cheaper with their weres, who happen to not have any restrictions, with the reputation of this being a haven," the third spoke up, her voice quiet and sharp.
"Who says there are no restrictions?" Tony asked, raising an eyebrow. "We've got house rules here, same as everyone. And what other people think is none of my concern." All technically true and relevant, Tony was doing well for the moment. "You don't invade boarding houses like this, do you? Because I feel real bad for those tenants if you did, let me tell you."
The woman shrugged and looked off to the side.
"You've been getting a lot of press recently is all," the second man said. "Are the papers all in order for those three?" |
"Should be," Tony replied. "I'd be surprised if they weren't." Especially considering how much it cost to get the papers done so quickly.
"You have copies available?" the woman prodded, since just asking about them hadn't been enough.
"Probably," Tony responded. He looked at her. "Hey, no, I'm not going to deal with you, you harass boarding houses, that's not cool."
"Probably?" the man said. He sounded slightly more amused. Slightly. "Could we see those copies?"
Finally, someone with half a brain.
"I assume so, if they were in front of you," Tony said, relenting. "Stay here, don't touch anything, don't harass the others." At the last comment, he sent a pointed look at the woman, and then went to get the papers out of the safe spot he'd left them. |
The woman sniffed disdainfully but didn't say anything. The man just chuckled a bit. He kind of liked Tony, after all.
Tony came back a minute or two later with copies of the papers. The originals were somewhere safe, but the copies were good enough to hand over.
The three looked through the papers, and Zee smirked faintly when he noticed that they were legitimate documents of ownership.
Tony caught the smirk and quirked an eyebrow. Hey, when he needed things done, they got done and got done right.
"May we keep these?" the second man asked, looking at Tony. "I think we're going to go over these a bit more, review everything we saw."
Zee briefly made a face, but really, he'd expected that. |
"What else is there to review?" Tony asked. "You came, you saw, you can see the paperwork is good, what else is there?"
"Other things," the snooty woman said, clearly enjoying being able to return the favor of being difficult.
"Hey, don't you have some unfortunate boarding house to darken the doorway of somewhere else?" Tony retorted, glancing at her. Nope, he didn't like her at all.
The woman smirked and took the papers, walking away. Zee made a face after her. He just wanted to be done with this job already.
"I'm amazed you put up with her long enough to even get here," Tony muttered to Zee. "Seriously."
"We took our own cars," Zee muttered as she walked back to her sleek, expensive little sedan. "I just want to be done with this already."
"Nobody wants to be done with this more than me," Tony replied. He watched the woman get into her little sedan. "And if she thinks I'm going to forget that she annoyed me, she's got another thing coming."
"Wait until after this is all done," Zee advised. "At least a month after." He watched the other man get into his car and drive away as well. They'd all get together tomorrow to finish discussing things. "If you don't draw any more attention to yourself, you've got a good chance of getting off fine."
Tony gave Zee something of a flat look. Of course he wasn't going to ruin things now, not when they were so close. Once they were off the hook, though, all bets were off.
Zee snorted. "Go settle in, try to relax, or stop worrying so much. We'll get back to you with the result."
"I would love to see you try to relax after a day like today," Tony snorted. He waved a hand and headed back inside. He had a computer to gut.
