Ingress

I have been playing this game to motivate myself to get out an exercise more, Ingress.

It's basically capture the flag, only world wide. I am on the "Enlightened" team (or the green team). It's quite a bit of fun. I have seen art I never would have noticed, and walked a TON since starting this game. It's pretty awesome.

In the area I live, the green team is smaller in numbers by a ton, but, the blue team is run like the military. I just don't have that kind of time to devote to a game. So, I am pretty thrilled that the green team over here is more interested in playing and in having fun. We do happy hours and stuff like that. It is a lot of fun. It is not something I can do all day every day, but I am glad it is motivating me to get out a bit and it is definitely helping me walk more.

I downloaded Ingress on my tablet recently, and then realized it would be basically worthless because my tablet is wi-fi only, so it couldn't track where I was going. I just got a smartphone though, so I'm looking forward to finding out what's around my area. There was a lot of activity in my last town (it looked like mostly Enlightenment) but I just moved back to my small hometown and I'm not sure how much activity there will be here.

I joined the Enlightenment also, btw. :D

BellyButton 03-11-2014 01:35 AM

Darn, I don't have a GPS-capable droid at the moment either, since my last phone took a swim. Looks very nifty!

DariaMorgendorfer 03-11-2014 04:07 AM

WOOHOO!! Another Enlightened!!!! Maybe you can tether your tablet to your phone? Chexala: You should see out other agents in your area. It is more fun in a group, and relies heavily on teamwork. I am having fun meeting new people!

OMG, Belly, you would LOVE Ingress!!! I am seeing all kinds of things I am not sure I would have seen in this town. Artwork and stuff. It's great. And it is helping me walk more...Which is good for me. If you ever do start...Find me in game. I am JaneLane (DariaMorgendorfer was too long for the game *pouts*) I can hook you up with agents in your area. Assuming you go green. If you join the smurf regime. Well....Um...Have fun being told what to do, when to do it and where to do it. LOL.

Chexala 03-11-2014 05:11 AM

I was checking out the game map last night and saw that there were a couple spots nearby. They're both a couple miles away, but that's to be expected, since I live a couple miles out of town. [lol] Still it'll be good for me to go on some long walks.

I'm wondering how many other players there might be around here, since I think both of the spots near my house are currently neutral territory? I'll have to investigate, and claim them for the Enlightenment!

DariaMorgendorfer 03-12-2014 05:02 AM

YES!!! Let me know if you need any help =D Most of the stuff my area does is through Google +. We are outnumbered pretty seriously by the blues, but we are a kinda tight nit little group. It's fun.

Chexala 03-12-2014 06:01 AM

Ugh, my town is crawling with the Resistance!
I went into town today to play around and discovered that everything is already claimed by the blues. I was also having serious trouble with the app. I'm not sure what was wrong, but I couldn't collect XM or level up. X( I just downloaded an app update, so hopefully it will work better next time.

So, there are all those tutorial missions, right. Are those supposed to clear away once you've finished them? Do you get different missions later on?

Chexala 03-15-2014 10:22 AM

Lol, I think what was wrong with my app was that I didn't remember how to play. [lol]

Breaking into this game is going to be hard, because the Resistance has this area totally built up with lots of high level stuff. But there is one particular guy who seems to be in control of everything, and I have made it my mission to distroy him. >:D

DariaMorgendorfer 03-20-2014 05:40 AM

I am outnumbered something like 4 to 1 where I live. Apparently for a few months the game had a bug and if you tried to sign up as enlightened, you still ended up as resistance. Since then the game has been skewed and we are pretty outnumbered. Still it is fun!

I went out last night with several "teammates" We met at a local bar and had food/drinks. After that, the bar owner loaned us the bar's "Designated driver" van. It seats about 14 people. So there were 14 of us driving around claiming and farming portals. It was a lot of fun!

In my area, the green team is just very laid back and fun. We know it is a game, and it is meant to be fun. There is no "winning" or end point. So it's all in good fun.

I am walking a lot, meeting a lot of fun people and having a good time. So I am all for Ingress! [yes]

Chexala 03-20-2014 07:27 AM

I don't know what happened, but all the portals in my town suddenly went neutral. One day, everything was blue and linked and covered in high level resonators, and then next day, it was all just gone.

So, I took it all. [twisted] A couple of portals in the middle of town got immediately reclaimed by someone on the Resistance, but so far, everything else I've claimed has been left uncontested. It's...strange. I feel wary of this development.

Still, it's fun to "own" pretty much the whole town.

I've been talking to my sister about the game a lot, and she's gotten all excited about it. She doesn't have a smartphone, so she can't play herself, but she has declared that she is going to play vicariously through me. [lol]

Wonderlands 03-21-2014 01:58 AM

That looks so awesome. I love how more apps are being based around getting out there and moving around.
I don't think many people where I live would use it since I live in a pretty small town and everything is spaced out, like we don't exactly have an inner city but I guess it's worth a shot.

Chexala 03-21-2014 03:49 AM

Wonderlands, definitely check it out! I live in a rural area also and didn't think there would be many portals around. I was really surprised by how many there ended up being in my tiny-butt town, which has less that 1000 people in it. [:D]

Wonderlands 03-21-2014 03:57 AM

Less than 1000? Oh boy! D: I really have no excuse then, haha. That's pretty great though, its made me excited now.
But I have to wait.. good ol' iOS. I hope it comes out soon!

Chexala 03-21-2014 04:33 AM

Oh, is it not out for iOS yet? I heard that was coming this year, but wasn't sure when.

I just came across another game Ingress today which is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter. Check it out: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ry-control-gam

I really like the idea of these location-based multiplayers games becoming a bigger phenomenon. [:D]

---------- Post added 03-20-2014 at 09:35 PM ----------

And yes, my town is tiny! The community here is actually a string of little towns along the Pacific coast, so there are more than a thousand people here overall, but there are only about 800 people living within the bounds of my particular town. I think the largest town on the coast here is about 7k? Something like that anyway. ^__^

DariaMorgendorfer 03-22-2014 07:34 PM

You can always submit a portal to be added too! So if there are not many in your town, you can have some added. I am hoping a trail head near my home will become a new portal soon. I'd love that! There is also one I want to submit that would make a great portal, it is on the top of a mountain! Hahaha, make people work for it!

Ingress is not for apple products as it is funded and created by Google. I doubt we will see them add apple software anytime soon.

Chexala: probably what happened with those portals, they were all one teams, and a high level probably drove by and destroyed it all and left them set for someone like you to come by and "claim" them for your own (and get AP to level up) [yes]. See if there are other "agents" you can reach out to in your town. It makes the game more fun to work with others. You also might be able to get gear from them and help with leveling up.

Last night we were doing a huge operation to help out my team to make a gigantic field. Unfortunately the other team got there first and made a HUGE field that covered most of Arizona, Parts of New Mexico and went up to Colorado. Man....That was rough! I think some of it might still be up by I am not sure.

Chexala 03-23-2014 05:49 AM

I was reading about a massive op last night, called Emerald Flood, that stretched from Catalina Island to the Grand Canyon. Was your op related to that?

I think the players around here are either bored because they're already leveled up, or they're helping me. All of my stuff got neutralized today but they left it open, so I ran into town and took it all back. I also attacked some portals that they've left decaying. I got a bunch of points for all that, so I'm happy regardless. I hope these Resistance players keep it up, because it gives me something to do.

Ultimately, the Enlightenment needs the Resistance, and visa versa. :)

Suzanne Sky 03-24-2014 10:55 PM

OHMYGOSH! I just read up on Ingress on Wiki and other sites. I really, really want to play it, but like Wonderlands I have an iPhone too. But maybe the wait won't be too long. Chexala - my hope was dimming for playing even when it comes out for iPhone until I saw that you have no problem in your town of 1000! YAY! That is about the size of my town too. I am so excited about this game!

DariaMorgendorfer, I am so glad you brought this game discussion to the forum. Happy, happy, happy! :)

Suzanne Sky 03-25-2014 08:44 PM

So last night after being so excited by the possibility of Ingress, I searched iPhone apps and google for similar games. I found two: Munzee and WallaBee. I checked them out on YouTube too. So, since they were both free apps, I downloaded them, not being completely sure I whether I would enjoy them or not.

WallaBee - You are basically collecting pictures and/or sets of pictures by going to places listed that are near you. The information I read kept saying how wonderful and beautiful the pictures were that you would collect. Well, they are not. They are cheap, dull looking things - model Ts, beach chair, stack of dollar bills, etc. Dull colored and just cheap looking line art. Even for my tiny little town there were a lot of places listed to go in order to win more of these pictures. Places like the corner stores, etc. Not much of a challange at all. But if anyone is interested in collecting and trading those pictures, I guess it would be fun. I think I am just going to delete this game from my iPhone though.

MUNZEE - This game seems better. If you like geocaching a lot, you would probably like this one. No cache involved, but what is hidden instead are QR codes - those little maze looing squares that you scan for info into your phone - around places....wherever some other player wants to hide them. So some of those places are nice - parks, nature trails, interesting buildings, etc. You can get some QR codes to hide from ordering them (real money) from the site or apparently you can print free ones from the site. However, the site seems so icky and disorganized...broken links too. Some of it may be just the fault of my computer, which has issues with some sites, but from the looks of it, I don't THINK that's the whole of it. So the page that has the option to print out free QRs is not working for me, so that part of the game is not something I would be able to do, unless I want to order and pay for QR codes and wait for the mail to bring them to me. Granted, the ones you can buy are nicer and sturdier, but I could make my printed ones nice and sturdy too. Basically what you are earning with this game is points for bragging rights of a high score. The points you earn are just that - points in your tally. And the codes are just plain black and white squares of coded information. But at least it does get you out walking, I guess, and possibly in new and interesting places. The munzees are listed on a map in the app and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are two in my town and four in nearby surrounding towns. One is at a museum, but the other five are just at a corner store, at a Walmart parking lot and on signs along the highway. However, if you deploy your own munzees you could place them anywhere you like - parks, nature trails, etc. - and make good ones for other players to find. I think I will try this game and see if I enjoy it enough to keep it.

Thoughts anyone???

DariaMorgendorfer 03-30-2014 10:27 PM

Suzanne Sky: do you know if those games are playable on the google play platform? I am due for a new phone but not going for an Iphone. I love my droid products.

There was a huge event this weekend in Los Angeles. A player from over there had brought "keys" to us in Arizona. I had two keys and kept recharging them during the timeslot that the "recursion" was going on. It was wild! I could not keep my keys recharged! I used sooo many power cubes on it. Amazingly enough, the Enlightened actually won that recursion!

There was also a HUGE field made that went from California to Hawaii, Japan and up to Canada! It was AMAZING! [yes]

No Chexala: I was not a part of emerald flood. I totally want to organize something like that. I'm struggling to get people on board though. It's kinda like herding cats.

Suzanne Sky 03-31-2014 02:31 AM

DariaMorgendorfer: Munzee is playable on google play/android, but I am not sure about Wallabee. Actually, I deleted Wallabee from my iPhone. I just thought it was really lame. But I kept Munzee, so far. I've yet to play it, and don't think it will be a favorite, but it is something I might try at some point if I find myself at a place where there is a munzee deployed. It's just that there are not many hidden around here, and they are hidden in really dull as diswater places. It might work much better and be a lot more fun in your location. :)

DariaMorgendorfer 04-01-2014 01:13 AM

Hey look! An updated video on what is Ingress!

DariaMorgendorfer 04-30-2014 03:05 AM

The new capsules are really cool. I got to play with one the other night. I got transferred over 100 items from another player to me in hardly any time!

Chexala 04-30-2014 11:24 PM

I haven't been able to play in ages because my phone is out of data. [cry] I have an on-demand phone, so I can get more whenever I want, but it's kinda pricy and I'd have to be frugal with it, so basically it would be adding a price to the game. ><

That video is cool though, it's making me miss the game.

DariaMorgendorfer 05-02-2014 05:23 AM

I went walking tonight. I am trying to do 10,000 steps a day. With ingress, I made 7,000. It is really hard to make 10,000 where I live. NO ONE walks, everyone drives!
