"Good," Avery said, grinning. She set her paper file down on the table next to the detailed Avenger files. She expected Tony to demand to see her paper file any time, now that he'd had the night to get frustrated with not finding it digitally.
Sure enough, as soon as Tony came in to the kitchen and saw she had a paper file, he zeroed in on it.
"You have a paper-only file too?" |
"Of course I do," Avery said, glancing over at him. "Tony, I told you flat-out I'm not entirely human, you really think they'd keep that kind of information somewhere it could be hacked into?"
"Considering they thought they couldn't be hacked into? Yes." Tony held out a hand for the report and raised an eyebrow at her.
"Tony, they hoped you wouldn't bother trying," Avery pointed out, handing him the file. Inwardly, she hoped that he wouldn't start treating her badly again once he read the file. He was notorious for not liking magic-users who were also non-human, and being a SHIELD agent on top of that didn't help her much.
Tony just snorted at that and took the file, grabbing a cup of coffee and starting to read through it.
Avery knew exactly what he would find in the file.
Agent: Avery Maclaine Age: 25 Hair/Eye Color: Pale blonde/Hazel Distinguishing Physical Attributes: Pointed ears (See Notes), runic tattoo on left side of ribcage. Race: White/Other (See Notes) Nationality: American Clearance Level: 8 Agent Specialty: Metaphysics (See Notes) Known Affiliations: Agent Kerry Littleton (partner) Notes: Specialist legitimately claims non-human lineage. Research and inquiries reveal lineage as alien, specifically coming from Alfheimr (note: more information needed, possible inquiry with Thor necessary). Research notes that the Alfir are advanced practitioners of magic, and Avery Maclaine is not exempt. It wasn't a large file, and the second page was just full of notes from former handlers and her last six SHIELD physicians. The doctors all clearly were wary of treating her; her physiology was a bit different from a normal human, and she didn't react quite the same to some drugs. There was a note at the bottom mentioning that she mostly looked after herself when necessary. |
Tony looked through the notes quickly. They were pretty Spartan at best, and despite himself he was curious. In the name of Science, and not magic, because magic was evil and he still didn't like magic in the tower.
"Not much in here." He set it back down on the table. |
"Doesn't need to have a lot," Avery replied evenly, glancing at him. "Just the basics. Some of it is classified under level 6. But it's not safe to keep it in the computer system, just in case." She shrugged. "People took to Thor well enough, he's impossible to dislike. But I doubt they'd take so well to a mutt like me, especially when me just being here explicitly implies that aliens are among us."
Tony snorted. "Yeah, well, things are changing faster than anyone likes," he muttered, finishing off that cup of coffee and pouring himself another.
"No kidding," Avery said, getting up and getting herself some coffee. She could have just as easily magicked herself some, but she was trying to respect Tony's wishes about no magic in the tower.
Tony snorted and headed back to his lab. That was as close to acceptance as he was getting at the moment.
Avery watched him go, and then went back to reading the dossiers. A while later, her attention was grabbed again by Jarvis.
"Agent, if you would... I believe Sir could use some assistance in his workshop." Curious, and slightly alarmed (because since when did Tony ever want her in the workshop?) she made her way downstairs. |
Tony had a towel wrapped around his hand, cursing a blue streak as he applied pressure. Not like this was the first time he'd had an accident in his lab, but still.
Avery could see blood staining the towel, and went over quickly.
"Hold still," she said. "Let me heal that for you." |
"No, no, I'm good, I'll be fine, just need to get Bruce up here, besides no magic in the tower, I remember making that a rule." Tony glowered at her but it wasn't up to his normal standards.
"You did make that rule," Avery acknowledged. "And I'm about to break it. Either you let me heal you, or you risk losing your finger." She gestured to where the blood was still spreading on the towel.
"I'm not going to lose my finger, that's ridiculous, I'm in no danger of--"
"Sir, she is correct," Jarvis interrupted. "...Fuck. Fine." Tony scowled and unwrapped the towel after a moment. |
"Jesus, Tony, what did you do?" Avery asked, gently making sure everything was in place before carefully pushing some healing magic around. The wound slowly (but visibly) knit back together.
"One of the arrows blew up in my face," Tony said with a grimace. "One of the hazards of the job." His finger knitting back together felt weird, but he forced himself to hold still.
"Ah, working on something for Clint, then," Avery said as she worked. "That makes sense, he was whining a little about not having any new toys recently." Once the flesh was reknit, she gently probed with her fingertips to make sure nothing was out of place. "There, that should do it. Just be careful, I can't rebuild calluses, you'll have to get those back on your own."
Tony shrugged. "That still felt really weird," he said, moving his finger and grimacing. "But I suppose it's better than being sans a finger, that would just be silly."
"No kidding," Avery said. She stepped back, giving him his personal space again. "And that's it, so I'll go back to being magic-free again, unless you need anything else."
"No, I'm good now." Tony eyed her speculatively, his eyes sharp, but he didn't say anything else. He wasn't good at thanking people so he'd just make her a new toy instead.
Avery raised an eyebrow when she saw him studying her.
"What?" she asked. "You're looking at me like I'm a bug in a jar. I know you've seen magic before now." |
