Did you know that sushi...?

Is NOT raw fish? SASHIMI is raw fish... I just get so ticked when people mix the two up. >_<

Lexadis 04-15-2014 03:50 AM

No, but doesn't matter much when you get a set and eat both [lol]

Haha they both taste really good.

Maxipuff 04-15-2014 03:59 AM

Real wasabi tastes soooooo good, too.
Wish it was more common.

Mmm no kidding. Nothing beats the real thing!!

Lexadis 04-15-2014 04:14 AM

Wasabi I don't like [XD] I've not eaten the veggie though [ninja] only the paste [lol]

Not entirely true. A few types of Sushi used cooked fish but most are raw. The difference between Sushi and Sashimi is that Sashimi is the raw fish alone, no rice or seaweed wrapped around it.

Maxipuff 04-15-2014 05:59 AM

Lexadis; I haaate the fake kind that you usually find in the US.
I just had real, freshly ground wasabi this year from a fancy sushi place
and it tastes much different. I don't know quite how to describe it… But it's definitely different.

Lexadis 04-15-2014 06:37 AM

I eat sushi when I visit Japan, so I don't think they are fake [ninja] But it reminds me of curry leaves, which is so so common here [lol]

Admonish Misconstruction 04-15-2014 09:31 AM

I absolutely love the taste of gari.

Where are you from? o.O

Pistachio_Moustache 04-15-2014 05:16 PM

Most meat on sushi is slightly cooked.
So, it's not technically raw.

Maxipuff 04-15-2014 05:22 PM

Oh, but what's everyone's favorite sushi/nigiri/sashimi??

I love ebi nigiri, even though it's so basic, I know. [lol]
Saba (mackerel) sashimi is my other favorite. ^__^

Pistachio_Moustache 04-15-2014 05:26 PM

I don't know the names of them...
D:

I like the salmon ones...

Speaking of sushi...

Maxipuff 04-15-2014 05:30 PM

I've heard that song before!!! But I never knew the name or saw the music video.
That's hilarious. [lol]

Pistachio_Moustache 04-15-2014 05:32 PM

I really like it.
xDD

Admonish Misconstruction 04-15-2014 07:57 PM

Eel is the best sushi [squee].

Never had eel... what does it taste like?

Maxipuff 04-15-2014 09:42 PM

Unagi!! Eel is cooked, but it's delicious. Umm… It's kind of saucy and sweet. [lol]
I don't know how to describe the texture.

As Maxipuff said ^^. It's called a unagi roll, which is broiled fresh water eel. It comes with this really tasty glaze which is sake, mirin, sugar, water, and soy sauce (and maybe some other ingredients.) Eel has sort of a chewy almost chicken like texture. It tastes like a cross between chicken and calamari or sea scallop with a sweet bite.

Some places just drown the eel in the glaze which nullifies the eel's taste. So there's this important balance between too much and too little. It's very yummy though, I would definitely suggest trying it. I wouldn't consider it something that has a acquired taste.

It's definitely my favorite roll. Unfortunately I only get to make it myself on rare occasions. I want to know where all of the restaurants get their eel from!

Maxipuff 04-15-2014 10:11 PM

And dragon rolls are a common menu item at most sushi venues!
They're usually made with eel on top. I haven't seen one that isn't, anyway. [lol]
It was my favorite roll when I was younger. [yes]

Booderdooder 04-16-2014 12:26 AM

I love sushi, but I don't think I've actually had much sushi with
fish in it.
I usually get California rolls, which are mostly vegetables and cooked crab.
I think the most unusual sushi I've had was some sort of eel roll,
which had fried eel and cucumber.
I don't think I've ever had sushi with raw fish, then (@v@;)

whatiskawaii 04-16-2014 01:38 AM

I go to an authentic place here run by people from Japan. It's a japanese market with a tiny sushi bar in the back. We always get sushi rolls and sashimi and the fish is the same. All raw. We watch them make it right in front of us lol.
I love Eel sushi the best.
Glad to see tons of people in the thread agree and love eel as well! :3

Pistachio_Moustache 04-16-2014 01:42 AM

I don't remember having eel.
Maybe I'll try it next time~

You should definitely try eel. If they have eel with cucumber, or Crazy Eel roll I suggest that!
It's really good with a pickled radish roll on the side. They compliment each other so well
