Definitely subbed! Unless its like 90's anime haha...for some reason the voice acting is just really good during that time. I guess more money for better actors...and pre-Moe era LOL. As for animation though, I still say subbed. I've gotten to where I read quite fast so it isn't really an issue. Plus animation these days aren't that par. They are more up to date with being HD and colorful and what not but the animation has decreased a lot in terms of quality. So it's not like I'm missing much. (Sure there are some amazing sequences but most of the time it's very low cost production outside of the frame).

It has to do with what I'm doing while I'm watching the show. If I'm not actively watching, I'd rather it be dubbed so I know what's going on. If I am actively watching, subbed is good for me. I'm a fast reader (though admittedly there have been a few times I've had to pause and go back because the characters talk so darn fast! D: )
Some shows I've watched both ways (mostly CLAMP animes) and I like them both ways. There are some shows however that are obviously badly dubbed and so those I put off watching until I can actively watch and enjoy them subbed (unless they still suck that way, in which case I don't bother)

It depends on the anime, which I'm picky on what series I watch. I usually enjoy the subbed version to get the full effect (even if it takes longer to read some parts), unless I'm tired or doing something else at the time & don 't feel like reading it... lol

I prefer watching subtitled foreign language movies and series...doesn't matter whether it is animated or not, and i do like to be able to trust the subtitles to be an close as possible translation.

I always watch subbed anime. I can't stand dubbed. First off, for some reason English voice actors can never get the inflection or emotion right most times. It's really odd. Then there are the puns that make many "comedy" shows are made almost entirely of that just do not work out in English. Dragon Half was one of these shows. I watched it in English first and while it wasn't completely boring or un-funny, it was no where near as hilarious as the Japanese version.
And then there's the choice of voice for character. I believe Yuki from Fruits Basket has already been mentioned? I'm of the belief that when the show is made in it's original country we get to hear a voice that the author thinks matches his character. American Yuki was 100% a no-no for me.

It depends entirely on who's doing the dubbing and how close they're staying to the script. Stray too far or keep too much direct translations and you have a recipe for a bad dub, no matter how good the dub cast is. Not to mention the times you get people directing dubs who have no clue what the tone of the acting and dialogue should be.

I'm a bit on the fence with this one. I usually watch subbed just because I watch anime on crunchyroll a lot and they have a lot of subbed shows. but I will give dubbed a chance before writing it off completely. They need to be cast correctly, though, and the script needs to stay close t the original.

The only exception I will make is the ADV Films version of the Ghost Stories dub. They purposely re-wrote the script to a more comedic version and let the voice actors ad-lib some of their lines. I, personally, found it hilarious.

Yu yu hakusho dubbed is my favorite, all other animes, I like them subbed.

I've watched every episode of every Slayers series, all dubbed, and they actually did a fair job, IMO... It was also a fun show in its own right.

I don't recall even having a subtitles option at the time, this was years ago, and I had it all on VHS, LOL.

for me it all depends on the anime.
some I like the english and japanese vers of them.
just then you have some like vampire knight where I HATE the english dub.
but with negima I like both the sub and dub of it.

For me it depends; now that I'm taking Japanese, I prefer subs so that I can try picking up on terms and usage (it's a little difficult to listen intently, watch, and read all at the same time, but I think it helps!), but there are animes I prefer dubbed. Case Closed is one of them (which sucks for me because they stopped dubbing them!), along with Ouran High School Host Club and probably Hetalia because I like the silly accents. If I watch anime with my sister, I try to pick animes that I don't mind not seeing in its original subbed form so that I don't feel like I'm missing anything (I've heard so much about how certain things are lost in translation through dubbing! It makes me paranoid, lol).

Personally I felt that the Fruits Basket dub was atrocious, and I don't think I even finished an episode! Haha.

Personally I like dubbed better, but a lot of that is cause I'm a slow reader. So something that's half an hour will take me forty-five minutes to watch cause I'm pausing all the time. Though if I really want to see the anime and it's only subbed I'll still watch it lol.

When I'm too tired or whatever to read subtitles, I just imagine I can understand Japanese, and more often than not I can follow along pretty well... They usually have their visual context flowing well enough to follow what's happening, even if you can't understand the words...

It's like when I was little, I guess... I actually kind of remember following along with movies and television even when I couldn't understand half of the words...

I'd be willing to bet that's part of how we learn our language these days, through media immersion.

And I agree, I think listening to the sounds while seeing the words in English could help with learning another language.

It would be strange to take the Simpsons and Dub Japanese language onto the characters.
Japanese animation sounds strange to me when we place a different language onto the show. I feel like I am missing out on what the characters actually sound like. Who they were meant to be. It helps also that I am fast reader, and I can tell what some of what the characters are saying as well.

My most used example for this is, Sailor Moon. The American version of this beautiful anime was a horrible downfall (in my mind). The character's voices are annoying. Overly exaggerated. AND their dialogue was changed to suit the old American standards. Watching the series in Japanese, to me, made a world of difference. The characters are more believable, the scenes and jokes make more sense. Their voices aren't a headache to listen to. And they don't change character gender.

I am not a Naruto fan, but I would rather watch that show in Japanese than English. They all just simply SOUND better in Japanese than they do in English.

As someone who often watches movies/shows originally made in English that were dubbed in Japanese for Japanese audiences, it's not always bad. Just like the reverse, it can be hit or miss. And the companies with bigger budgets (like Disney) generally produce consistently better results than companies with cheap budgets or situations where making things match/sound similar don't matter very much, like variety TV shows.

But there are times when a voice change ruins a movie or makes it noticeably very different from the source. I find that "quirky sidekick" characters seem to be the hardest to recast properly. The voice can be either too bland, so you loose the quirkiness, or way too goofy so the character just seems ridiculous. The best Japanese dub I've seen for that kind of character was Genie from Aladdin. But he sounded exactly like Robin Williams, so there's that. [lol]

Lols, this world is filled with hit and misses.
Its a good thing there is a variety of anime, so that people, no matter their preference, will find enjoyment in something.

I don't care, either works really. Although I have a serious hard time watching an anime (or whatever) a different way if I had seen it another. Example, I have been watching Kill la Kill in Japanese on Hulu (and now Netflix). Should they give it an English voice cast I will still watch it in Japanese. The same applies for dubs to subs, I can not watch Cowboy Bebop in Japanese because I have only heard it in English (although I also watch it because the creator has stated the English dub to be the definitive dub, so it's pointless to watch it in Japanese anyway. Point stands through example though.). Otherwise, if I've got time I'll pop on whatever is available on Netflix or Hulu (I absolutely refuse to watch streaming sites) regardless of voice talent.

Subbed for me, haha!~ I'm not used to the voices in most dubbed versions.

I am actually someone who only goes for subbed ersions (For Anime only though). If it's movies and cartoons, it's a whole different story. Of course it's rather difficult to follow the action while reading along but geez, it's no big deal. Plus I get to learn japanese along the way cx And truthfully, I love hearing japanese voice actors/ actress lol. But that's a personal preference.

Speaking anime specifically, I prefer subbed. I find the acting in English is usually very bad, but then again, the Japanese only sounds better because I don't know the language.
So, ignorance is bliss I suppose.
