Was eating lunch and watching Star Trek: Into Darkness on TV...watched Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness last night but it's on TV again earlier and of course I just couldn't resist -_-; Didn't finish it though, just got to the part where Khan told Kirk to go check out the torpedoes. |

Hmm, well very much like your typical 60's show, with corny music and sound effects...
But, at the same time it had some interesting episodes and after hearing so much about Kirk and Spock and Scotty and all the rest, it was nice to see them in action. Had some very comical moments too, but all welcomed. I recommend watching it at one point [:D] |

Uh, there are 3 seasons so, 78 or 79 episodes. Something around there, I've only watched season 1 so far [sweat]

Shatner Rules is a sort of autobiographical book by William Shatner, with his guidelines for being successful and happy.
One of the Shatner Rules is: "Never Turn Down Free Cake". I find I agree with it wholeheartedly. Never turn down free cake. |

And the original series was actually very cutting edge for its time, with a multicultural crew from different countries, the idea of Earth united as a whole in the face of the realization that we weren't alone in the universe, and it raised many important points, culturally. It's also basically good old classic science fiction to boot, and it all works together to make it Star Trek. If I recall, the pilot episode had a different guy playing Spock, and the network people said the show could work, but only if they got rid of the "pointy-eared guy"... |
Yeah, I read somewhere about how they used alien cultures as a sort of mirror for what's going on on Earth, and bring in ideas that were too progressive for their time into the show without it getting banned or cut. It's pretty cool. :] |
The fact that they used it as a medium for social change is what really made it art, in my opinion. It was right on the edge of what was acceptable at the time, and got away with it, because that's one of the things fiction is allowed to get away with; saying things that you can't say if you're claiming to tell the truth.
For example: if you speak out against a corrupt government on television, they will find and silence you, but if you write a story that speaks out against corrupt governments, your voice could be heard for hundreds of years, and change the minds of the whole of civilized society. When people realize some corny show they saw as a kid was actually such a fine fit for the classic definition of socially motivated art, then I can see a lot of them deciding it was cool. And I like how people are smarter about it now, and don't think it was just some stupid show. I mean, you can wear a Star Trek shirt now without having to worry about whether you'll never get to go on a date, for one thing. It no longer means you're a loser, just because you like that "sci-fi junk." Believe it or not, most good science fiction is actually contemporary social commentary with a futuristic theme that points toward what we could be doing as opposed to what we've been doing. |

The original television series spawned several new series in the 90's I believe, and there were several movies made.
The recent remake and the new movie are sort of nostalgic revisitations for the contemporary crowd. The old movies, with the original cast, sort of helped spawn the Next Generation/Babylon 5/Deep Space 9... which in turn kept the fandom alive until the remakes. It's been going on for a hella long time, really. It's one of our modern living myths, I mean, more people know about Spock than know who the god Vulcan was, lol! |
