Soda Pop

Hey, want a coke? A cola beverage?

What do you call it, and what do you like? Are you loyal to a brand, have you tried the generic versions? How much soda do you drink in a day or a week. Feel free to answer any and all of those questions and in no particular order. I think there's a lot to talk about here.

VeraDark 06-29-2014 11:47 PM

I'm rather enjoying ginger ale right now, myself.

As for brand loyalty, they all probably call me a slut behind my back; I've no real preferences in brands, because they're all different, and I like a little variety.

I also dig on a good root beer, colas all sort of taste the same to me, and lemon-lime is awesome no matter the brand.

Right now though, mostly because it's what I've got handy, it's ginger ale.

I've been mixing it in with pistachio ice cream, and it's like someone turned the light on all of a sudden. I never knew it could be so good!

*has had to force herself to stop before all the ice cream vanishes and she makes herself ill*

Yay, firsties!

This is the funniest thing I've read all day. I heart you Vera.
But... ginger ale? Not so much. None for me thanks.

i should probably cut back on my soda consumption because i am most definitely sitting here mainlining mountain dew as i type this (oops lmao). i'm not super loyal to certain brands but i will say that coke is superior to pepsi and always will be. pepsi makes my mouth fizz a little too hard, almost burns hahaha.

VeraDark 06-30-2014 09:24 AM

I'm being bad, this morning I had ginger ale, and tonight I'm with cherry 7-up...

I'm such a fickle cow! [gonk]

Captain Howdy 06-30-2014 10:09 AM

I call it soda. Everyone in my little part of the world does. :B

Where the cola war stands, i'm firmly in the Coke camp. Pepsi is bleh. It's too syrupy.

But I love Coke and I never really deviate from it, especially since I only drink two cans a week. I used to have two cans a day, but then I had to cut that nonsense off. -- Every once in a while, when I feel like having something else, i'll drink a 7-Up or a Sprite.

7-Up's kinda weird, now they've changed the formula.

OrphanWhite 06-30-2014 03:34 PM

I call it soda, but most of my friends call it pop - maybe it's an Arizona thing?
A particular favorite of mine is Vanilla Coke, but Pepsi is what I prefer if I was just going to drink a basic cola-beverage.
But I don't really like drinking soda that much, as it goes straight to my hips, which I'm trying to avoid.
As I get older I know my metabolism is going to slow, so I'm preparing myself :p
However, I work in a movie theatre, where soda is pretty much the only thing to drink besides water, but our water tastes like straight arsenic, so I make a point to avoid it entirely.

Cola has never quite been enough to quench my, thirsts. At least not the way it did in 1886. I remember my first Coca-Cola, as we called it in Georgia when it was first introduced to the world in Jacob's Pharmacy. It was much more delectable then than it is now. I believe my last Cola was some time in the 1900's.

I won't touch Cola, this day in age. It is very bad for you, you know. I dream of a day when Cola no longer exists, as it makes the blood taste quite repulsive.

Penella Goldeater 06-30-2014 07:59 PM

ROFL. All this talk of cans a day going right to hips and cutting back and I'm just sitting here with my root beer belly like.. What? I've been fatter.

Most of us call it pop here. Although a friend of mine from another state gets on me all the time for "getting it wrong". He calls it soda. lol
I'm not necessarily brand loyal, but I'll pick a name brand over an off brand it I got the chance.
The amount I drink fluctuates. Sometimes Ill drink one every day, while other times only drink one once a week.

I concern myself not, with others' weight or calorie intake. Aside from the obvious weight issues that colas can cause, the beastly drink also reduces production of BDNF in the human brain. The lesser amount of BDNF in the brain, the lesser amount of memories it can retain and it becomes hard to retain new information and to learn new things. Low amounts of BDNF are also linked to depression and dementia.

Allowing a cola to coat your teeth is the same as allowing battery acid to coat them. It is even more damaging as a diet cola. Colas are the leading cause of tooth decay. Scarier still, in 2012 a Harvard study found that a mere 12 ounces of cola a day upped the chance of heart disease by nineteen percent. The University of Miami found that the risk was 61% if the cola was a diet cola.

Not to mention that it is linked to bone density loss, COPD, kidney damage, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and the big one that everyone already knows; obesity. Did you know that drinking one soda a day is 39 pounds of sugar one a year? As I stated before, I dream of a day when people no longer find the need to consume such a toxic liquid so freely.

But alas, like everything, moderation is important. A cola from time to time is probably okay for most people. I on the other hand, still find a great distaste for it. Then again, all foods and drinks have become very bland for me over the years...

I stopped drinking soda altogether in January 2012. I was having a crazy reaction on my body - I have hives all over the place and they would just not go away. I got an allergy test done and I am allergic to something that is used in many products as a fragrance...so I had to change my deodorant, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, detergent, etc. I had to stop wearing any kind of body spray or perfume. But in addition to it being used as a fragrance it is similar to vanilla and can be used as a flavoring as well. It can be listed as one of like 50 different names which makes it difficult to look for. The doctor said it's in most dark colas and some light ones. So I decided I didn't want to spend the time looking for the ingredient in the soda because it would take forever...so I quit drinking it altogether.

At first I started getting really bad headaches...someone suggested it might be sugar withdrawl since I didn't eat any sweets...the only sweet I "ate" was soda. So I started to eat a little bit of chocolate/etc and the headaches went away. I ended up losing about 10 pounds. I'm really tiny to begin with and have weighed about 120 pounds since I was in 9th grade...- but it was just that excess weight disappeared and I dropped to about 110 instead.

I feel much healthier as well! :)

Okay. That was actually fascinating. For some reason the physical side effects just don't concern me but the mental stuff. Hmm.

VeraDark 07-02-2014 09:12 AM

If I thought it would go straight to my hips and butt, I'd drink a 3-litre a day.

It would keep my spare tire from being so obvious.

Penella Goldeater 07-02-2014 02:14 PM

Yeah. That root beer belly of mine? Used to be, are you pregnant?
Noooooo. Thank you for asking, Assbutt.

VeraDark 07-02-2014 02:34 PM

If I thought I could get rid of the extra fat by going off of sodas, I'd switch to water in a heartbeat... but I spent the better part of three years, off and on, in a place where they didn't let me have any sodas at all, and it didn't make any difference...

I blame puberty.

That's when I put on the little fat roll, and it's never gone away. I take weight off, it all comes off my backside. I don't want that.

Honestly, I only drink soda usually because it's what's there, and the water here tastes bad... If I had the motivation I might make and drink more tea instead, but it's never as convenient as just walking to the fridge... <_<;

Penella Goldeater 07-02-2014 03:10 PM

If the tea is sweet it's almost as bad. My grandpa got crazy kidney stones when he went off soda because he coped / over compensated with tea.

VeraDark 07-02-2014 03:22 PM

*sigh*

Too bad even bottled water isn't really any good...

*will probably have to build a water distillery just to have healthy kidneys now*

Robutt 07-03-2014 12:39 AM

I don't drink soda that regularly, I mainly just like it for the bubbly instead of the flavor. I'm a strict coke-addict though, no other soda makes the cut! Though I do like the off-brand Kroger Cola

As for putting on weight it doesn't seem to matter if I drink the stuff or not, but then again I only have like 1 can a week, if that

It just burns so good! It's 'specially nice if you have a sore throat : D

Ferra 07-04-2014 01:10 AM

I call it soda back home, but I have to call it cola here or else people get confused since soda in Japanese refers to a very specific kind of carbonated beverage that's usually clear, blue, or green.

I don't drink soda anymore. I used to drink it occasionally growing up and then fairly frequently in my teens. But then one summer I went to Japan for a homestay and I was completely off soda for a few weeks, only drinking tea and water. The next time I had soda it tasted way too chemicaly and sweet and I realized I should stop drinking it. Now I drink tea or water everyday. I occasionally have carbonated drinks, but only on special occasions. Usually I'll only have cola if it's mixed with alcohol. [lol] I feel so much better now that I drink mostly water.

tillisnut 07-12-2014 02:20 PM

I generally call it soda. I don't drink that much as I used to. I have maybe a few cans a week once in a while. I most definitely hate the taste of diet anything. I like the real thing.

I like Coke.

Admonish Misconstruction 07-12-2014 08:17 PM

If someone asks you, "do you want a coke?" They're most likely referring to whether you want any soda, not just coke. When asked for a specific beverage everyone uses coke instead of Coca Cola.

I don't drink soda very often. Maybe once a week at most. All I really drink is water. If I drink soda it'll probably be a Dr. Pepper.

Darkness Within 07-12-2014 08:29 PM

Recently the only soda I've been drinking is Coca-Cola with a Dr. Pepper here and there while at a restaurant especially those that are Pepsi places. Can't stand Pepsi and can't stand anything diet.
As a young teen I was into Root Beer, Dad's or Mug but recently I think I'm loosing my taste for it all together.

I'm trying to lower my soda intake. It used to be that I only drank caffeinated soda every other day due to having palpitations when I was 13 but now I'm trying to have any soda in general only every other day.

VeraDark 07-13-2014 07:22 AM

Gor, I haven't had a Dr. Pepper in forever, I do like those...

And I agree with Robutt, (and I just like saying Robutt as well) that part of why I like it is the burn. When the throat is all dry, and the can of whatever-you-call-whatever-it-is-you-prefer-to-drink is icy-freezing cold, the chilling burn of all those exploding bubbles running across your tongue and down your throat is one of the most blissful feelings in the world.

*considers switching to writing cola adverts*

I tried something new (for me, anyway) today, but it wasn't a drink... it was root beer flavored though.

I had root beer flavored cotton candy today, and it was the knees! It's a bloody brilliant idea, and it's probably a good thing I don't have steady access to it, or I'd overdose on it.

Stuff was absolutely fantastic!

Ferra 07-13-2014 12:23 PM

I'm actually kind of worried that I'm no longer able to enjoy American foods like I used to. [:(] My mom sent me some candy (Skittles) and I had to take breaks eating them since they sweetness was overwhelming and I could no longer tell the difference between the flavors. I ended up throwing the rest away since they made me kind of sick to my stomach. She sent me some granola mix that I used to love, but now that tastes extremely sweet to me too. And I mixed the Raisinets she sent me with nuts so I could have a palate cleanse between each one.

I guess I've gotten so used to eating things with low sugar and less artificial sweeteners that now the stuff I used to like is overwhelmingly sweet and gross tasting. I still love snacks and sweets, but I only buy Japanese ones and they taste different and less artificial (most of the time).
