Steam Summer Sale (and other steam sales)

So I'm way late in making this. The sale is over. It would have been super great of me to make it while the sale was going on so we could rec games that were currently on sale, but... alas, I didn't think of that.

So the sale's over now and your wallet is waiting on that next paycheck to recover. What was your haul? Any gems? Impulse purchases? Duds? Things you're kicking yourself for not buying? And feel free to use this thread to talk about any other current steam sales, like the weekly deals!

I had to go pretty moderate because I have a $400 laptop, so it can't handle big games. I got Rogue Legacy, Battleblock Theatre, and Gone Home. The first two I've been wanting since I watched them played on Game Grumps. Gone Home was kind of an impulse buy, but I've since found that a friend bought it and says it's great. I haven't gotten to playing it yet because I've been so enthralled with Rogue Legacy. [lol] And my boyf bought BBT, so we co-oped that last night and it was super fun. He also got Batman: Arkham Origins, since he has a super fancy mac that can run any game ever (or so it seems). We've been playing the other Arkham games on it, so we'll be playing that next. [:D]

I really wanted to buy Goat Simulator and Skyrim, but I know there's no chance of my computer ever properly running those. [cry]

APBCole 07-01-2014 02:57 PM

I actually didn't get a chance to buy any games from the sale which sucks but that's how things go. I planned on some things but i'll just hold off till the Winter Sale when I can buy all the games I want without having to go full price on one of them. I'm actually planning on buying Plague Inc sometime this week because it's a game that reminds me of a flash game I played before so therefore i'm going to buy it. And spend hours trying to kill humanity. Cause i'm sadistic like that.

Overall though, you chose some nice games to buy for the sale. Hopefully you waited for the dailies when purchasing them because you always wait for the dailies unless it's the end of the sale.

Cherry Who? 07-01-2014 08:04 PM

Yep, they were all dailies except for BBT, which I bought on the last day. IIRC, it was about the same price as it was during its daily. If it wasn't, it was only by a difference of a dollar or two.

I'm guessing the flash game it reminded you of was Pandemic?

Elirona 07-02-2014 12:19 AM

I actually bought a lot of games from the sale! :o

The games I bought/were gifted (the ones with stars were gifted) to me are:
Final Fantasy VII
Skullgirls
Tomb Raider: Survival Edition
Project Zomboid
Battleblock Theater*
Planet Explorers
Grand Theft Auto III Trilogy (GTA III, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas)*
Darksiders II
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
King Arthur's Gold*

I have a gaming laptop, so most games run very well. <:3c

Wonderlands 07-02-2014 12:44 AM

I made one mistake, maybe two mistakes and some other good purchases. Mistake number one was that I bought Stick of Truth for a friend on the day it wasn't on sale. The next day, it was. So from $56 to $36 or something like that. I don't mind too much, it was quite funny actually. The second mistake was getting Sim City 4. Didn't look at the Mac speciations. So I tried upgrading my mac twice but it didn't work. Gave up, put it onto PC instead and the graphics are all glitchy. It was only $5 so I don't mind too much.

Now the good things! I got Hotline Miami, Skullgirls, Garry's Mod, Jazzpunk, Terraria, The Stanley Parable and Outlast. (One for me and another for another friend.)
I'm glad Terraria was only like a dollar something. Was not able to get into it at all. The Stanley Parable was interesting and I'm still trying to do all the endings. Garry's Mod.. Was weird. Mostly got it for Prop Hunt. And I've yet to install and play the rest.

Speaking of Game Grumps though, I saw someone in the wild wearing one of their shirts.

APBCole 07-02-2014 02:47 AM

@Cherry: Yep, reminds me exactly of Pandemic. Actually just bought it today now. Kind of stuck atm with trying to eradicate the world with a virus. I'll give it a try tomorrow...

Though, nice job going for only the dailies. Most people need to remember that the dailies are where you get the best deal for your game.

@Wonderlands: To fully appreciate Garrys Mod, you're going to need alot of Source games. Those include the Half Life series to Portal so you can really experience all the game mode.

Cherry Who? 07-02-2014 03:54 AM

I would be bad about waiting for dailies, but my boyfriend reminded me every time I tried to make a purchase. [lol] Plus, I wasn't really feeling up to dropping loads of cash, so I was only buying things that were less that $4, basically. Which was almost exclusively dailies. I didn't really commit to "participating" in the sale, I just made a few impulse purchases. Probably better for my wallet that way. [lol]

Elirona - Gaming laptop... nnng... Gimme. I'm too attached to portability now to ever want to go back to a desktop, but man do I wish I had the computing power. Not that I miss power, since this laptop is worlds better than my previous (ancient) desktop, but... yeah. I wish I could play normal people games. [lol] *toddles around with a 1.6 GHz*

Does the FF VII have any updated graphics compared to the original? I don't think it does, but I have to ask anyway because I've been wanting enhanced graphics for that since, uh... since FF VIII came out, really. [lol]

Wonderlands - Oh man, never buy something that isn't on sale during a Steam sale. It will be on sale soon. [gonk] And super bummer about Sims 4 not working! But at least you didn't drop $40 or whatever the retail price is on it to find that out.

I was momentarily tempted by Terrarria too. But I've seen playthroughs of it and... meh. I don't know what it is about it. I feel like I should like it. I just don't. [lol]

I saw someone wearing a Grumps shirt in the wild once, too! He was a classmate of mine, actually. We were talking about something else and I had not noticed his shirt at all until I think I interrupted him mid-sentence to go "GREP SHIRT!!" [lol] Do you watch GG?

onsenmark 07-02-2014 05:54 AM

I picked up One-Way Heroics, because I had to register for Otakon and stuff.

I don't know if the newer version of FF VII PC is already modded to have better graphics, but I know back in the day there were mods for improved graphics and whatnot.

Wonderlands 07-02-2014 06:43 AM

APBCole: I think it takes a bit to appreciate it, :p first I need to figure out how it works.

Cherry Who?: I have definitely learnt my lesson! This was my first Steam sale so I thought that once the Daily Deal was done for the day it wouldn't come back, even as a flash or community choice. I know it was offered at least three more times. :p haha yeah, I'm pretty grateful that Sim City 4 wasn't more. It could have gone a lot worse.

I had seen some play throughs of Terraria but they definitely made it look like a lot more fun than it actually is. Maybe you need someone else to play as well.. but for the few minutes I played it it got a big meh from me. Maybe I should give it another go for a little longer. But I totally know what you mean by that you should like it. Everyone seems to like it and it's kind of like Minecraft? Idk.

Haha, best time to be interrupted! It's so great seeing other people in public (or friends as well) that have the same interests as you. I've only begun watching them recently, after I found out about Starbomb. I had known about them before that but it kind of just kicked it off. I'm guessing you do. :p

APBCole 07-02-2014 01:15 PM

@Wonderlands: Oh, I remember my first time trying to understand GMOD especially the muiltiplayer.

Also, I love the Stanley Parable. The narrator is my favorite aspect of that game because he reminds me of myself. Except i'm not a godly narrative figure who can control someone...for the most part. Nor am I British.

I literally waited all year since last June to buy Oblivion on the summer sale (passed up the winter sale, too). I thought about buying it last year but hesitated and missed out. So, I got the Game of the Year edition of Oblivion for 9 bucks. Sure, it was only 25 dollars to begin with, but I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it as much as Skyrim so really didn't want to pay full price for it.

I've enjoyed it, but it's not beating out Skyrim for me so I'm glad I waited for the sale.

Robutt 07-03-2014 12:46 AM

I got Don't Starve and it's DLC for 7 buckaroos which was pretty nice! I'm having a lot of fun with it

I also gifted the Monaco 4-pack to some of my friends, it was great deal considering you get 4 games for the price of 1 (sans sale). It's also fun to play, 'cause you gotta be sneaky and tactical : P

APBCole 07-03-2014 01:11 AM

Oh, Robutt, I have a custom level for Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine that I have yet to finish. I really need to do that.

Such a fun game with how its top down and the different types of characters you have with different talents. The music is awesome too.

Cherry Who? 07-03-2014 08:05 AM

onsenmark - Wait, there are graphics mods? [:o] For some reason this never occurred to me. I need to see this!

Wonderlands - Ohhh, I see, it had already been on sale and you thought it wouldn't be again. I can understand that more!

Yeah, honestly I feel like Terraria would be a lot better if Minecraft didn't already exist. But since Minecraft does exist... It just feels like, "why would I play this when I could be playing minecraft instead?" Mehhh.

I've been watching GG for over a year and a half now. It seems like John only left a few months ago, but you may not even know who he is. [:O] And I think he's been gone longer than he was actually on the show for. [lol] But sometimes when I click on an old episode with John it doesn't even register with me as something unusual. Though honestly, I think Danny is a better cohost. John was not "not-so grump" so much as he was "slightly less grump but also still very grump" and it got too grumpy sometimes. Maximum grump. Not for fun times. [lol] If you need recs for their best episodes/series, I might be able to help!

Robutt - I have Don't Starve! It was gifted to me... possibly during the winter sale? I've had some trouble getting into it. I played it once and... it was neat but for some reason it didn't grab me. Feel free to talk about everything you love about it to convince me to play it more. [lol] I feel so bad not playing it when someone else bought it for me. [oops]

Elirona 07-03-2014 08:39 PM

I picked up South Park: the Stick of Truth right when it was released, because I'm an impatient butt. :P It was a fun play, the story was really good, if you like South Park (Which I do!). The gameplay is very... easy. It didn't take me long to get everything I was interested in, plus my character (I played as the rogue class) felt really overpowered.

I'm also into Game Grumps, though I haven't really been interested in anything they've been playing. Arin annoys me a lot of the time because he refuses to play tutorials and is like "I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME GOD DAMNIT". That makes me really mad. :p

As for games I've picked up on the sale, I've been playing Darksiders II and Battleblock Theater a lot. Darksiders II's story is really good so far, and the combat isn't very challenging; if you die, it feels like it was your fault.

Battleblock Theater is really fun! I'm all about puzzle-platformers with a large collection aspect. :P So far I've gotten A++ Ranks on all levels up to the end of chapter 6, because that chapter is super hard. ;-; The Behemoth tends to put out really fun games, such as Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid. :o

Cherry Who? 07-04-2014 01:21 AM

Yeah, Arin can get frustrating sometimes. The game specifically tells him what to do, and then he's like "GODDAMMIT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO HOW DO YOU PLAY THIS GAME?!????" But you also have to take into consideration that he's not just sitting there quietly playing a game by himself. The game does not have his full attention. He's also trying to do an improv show. So he's got to listen to whatever Danny (or Ross or whoever) is saying, think about ways to play off that, think about things to talk about if things go dead, watch the game to identify anything to make a joke off of there, and then he still has to play the game. I think the main issue is just that he seems to fail to think "you know, the game probably told me what to do and I wasn't paying attention." He's said that a couple times, but more times than that he just rages about the game being terrible. [lol] The Hello Kitty one... that was just painful to watch. There was a GIANT ARROW POINTING HIM WHERE TO GO AT ALL TIMES, and he still had no idea what to do. Good job.

Which is part of why Danny is such a great cohost. Has he ever gotten actually mad once on the show? Usually his reaction is more along the lines of a "haha, oh man!" type of laid back incredulity. So he calms Arin and helps balance it. When it got to be Arin and Jon both screaming at the game... ok, enough. [lol]

You should watch the Heart of Darkness playthrough they're doing right now! It's a good one. King's Quest is kind of okay. I wish Danny and Ross would play more BBT though. That was a good playthrough! I liked that there was a lot less "goddammit Ross" and more actual friendship. I mean, I think we were all starting to wonder if Danny even liked Ross at all. [lol] Yeah, he does.

I'll use that to transition to playing to BBT. I'm really enjoying it too, but I've only managed an A+ once or twice. I'm cooping with my boyfriend, so there's really no coordinating well enough to get the time bonus. We usually get all the gems and yarnballs, though! Only found one secret so far, however. We don't really rush, we spend a lot of time just goofing off, punching each other off ledges. [lol]

Wonderlands 07-04-2014 05:58 AM

APBCole:
I have a feeling it's going to take quite some time. First of all, I need to make it fit my screen a bit better.

The narrator is crazy. I have never ever experiences like that before. There literally feels like someone is standing behind me just.. narrating everything I do. It's incredibly well written. It can be funny but also slightly disturbing in a psychological sense.

Ahhh, I've pretty much just gotten into Mega64! They're so great.

Cherry Who?:
I'll totally take that as an excuse, haha. Definitely do know better for next time though.

That is a really good point. It would be an alright alternative but… Minecraft is still a thing. Maybe if I figure out all the controls I'd like it a bit better.

Haha, I do not have any idea who he is. I've gone though and watched videos that take my interest that he could be in buuut I would be able to name him. I know who Danny is! :D I mostly just watch ones with games that grab my interest but if there's any stand out episodes and stuff you like, throw them my way!

Elirona:
I bought Stick of Truth through Xbox Arcade when it came out. It was hilaaaarious but man, went so quickly and you become overpowered way too easily, which was great because I suck at things, haha. Totally worth the money though, it was a lot of fun and just a lot about it was ingenious. Like you don't even need to be a Southpark fan or watch it, that's just a bonus.

APBCole 07-04-2014 12:29 PM

@Wonderlands: My GMOD crashed alot when I first got it working and it had issues until I got a majority of the source games downloaded. It then didn't have any issues at all except for me forgetting commands from time to time.

Well the Narrator isn't normal in anyway. He's kind of off. There's just something funny though about how condescending he is and stuff.

Elirona 07-04-2014 02:02 PM

Not gonna lie Cherry, that Hello Kitty game actually looked kind of fun. It would probably be a game I enjoyed. :P I watched an episode of their Heart of Darkness playthrough. It was okay. It was the one where Arin kept getting crushed by the hexagonal blocks. :3 Danny is a great addition to the show! I'm happy they brought him on. John is... kind of obnoxious. For one thing, once Danny came on, the intro sequence was actually bearable to watch. It became an actual jingle, instead of... an out of tune mess? :P I'm not a fan of Ross since Ross is an idiot. Suzie is great, and so is Barry. :P

Yeah, that was my problem with it, Wonder. It was too easy! Yeah, you could totally get into it if you're not into South Park, but the experience is so much better if you've watched the show.

I have actually played the Stanley Parable! I've gotten most of the endings, but I got bored trying for the endings I didn't have. Also, That Raphael trailer is pretty amazing. :o

APBCole 07-05-2014 01:09 AM

Because the Stanley Parable has hilarious trailers.

Cherry Who? 07-07-2014 03:01 AM

Wonderlands - Well, Jon is... hmm. He's the one who adds "ass" to the end of everything. [lol] "Look at those buzz-ass bees." "Look at that wiggle-ass fish." etc. [lol] The older episodes. Danny has now been on longer than Jon was ever there for, so there are a lot more episodes with him now. But Jon was in the Sonic 06 playthrough. That was a long one, so you may not have seen it, but it's a classic.

As for recs, often their one-off episodes are pften the best. The Amazing Frog had me in tears I was laughing so hard. The worse a game is, the funnier the video will be.

Elirona - Yeah, I think I could have had fun with the HK game for a couple of hours. [lol] Not sure how Arin managed to play it for - what, 30 minutes? - and not actually get a single thing done or figured out.

I liked Jon a lot when he was on, but now that I have Danny to contrast with... yeah, kind of obnoxious.

Aww, I like Ross! I think he kind of plays a dumb character to give the show a butt monkey. But he's still funny and goofy. I like when he makes terrible jokes. [lol]

Admonish Misconstruction 07-07-2014 10:35 PM

I'm looking forward to playing BattleBlock Theater with my girlfriend (purchased the co-op bundle.) The single-player is rather solid and the level editor is promising. I thoroughly enjoyed Castle Crashers and Behemoth seems to have released another strong title. It has a very similar atmosphere and tone as Castle Crashers which is straight up my ally.

The Steam sale bit a little hard into my wallet. I ended up purchasing some games on impulse due to the urge to surpass the 200 game library threshold. Too bad my schedule doesn't grant me enough time to play them all leaving with me with around a 100 game backlog that isn't going to get any better.

The haul:

Age of Empires II: HD Edition
BattleBlock Theater
BiosShock
BioShock 2
BioShock 3 + DLC
Borderlands 2 DLC
Breath of Death VII
The Bureau: XCOM Declassified
Cthulhu Saves the World
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition
DEFCON
English Country Tune
Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
Halo: Spartan Assault
Insurgency
L.A. Noire
Long Live the Queen
Marlow Briggs
Monaco
Papers, Please
Shadowgrounds
Shadowrun Returns
SpaceChem
State of Decay
The Swapper
Tropico 4
Urban Trial Freestyle
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Edition
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
XCOM: Enemy Unknown

I've been fortunate enough to have a week of basically vacation to at the very least start some titles including Age of Empires II: HD Edition, BattleBlock Theater, BioShock, English Country Tune, FC3 Blood Draagon, Insurgency, L.A. Noire, Papers, Please, SpaceChem, State of Decay, Urban Trail Freestyle, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. If it isn't obvious I've spent most of my "vacation" sitting behind the computer like a lazy sod. If anyone has questions about those games just ask ^^.

The only game I regret not purchasing was Banished. The sole developer (a guy named Luke) has worked incredibly hard to release regular updates and fixes for the game. The game is built on a game engine that he built and he definitely deserves support. I'll end up buying his game full price anyways.

Cherry Who? 07-08-2014 11:57 PM

Holy cow, what a haul! BBT is the only game from that list that I've personally played, but I'm familiar enough with some of the others from Let's Play channels or general internet browsings. LA Noire is a really neat game! And the boyf got Bioshock 3 a while back from a Humble Bundle, and we plan on playing that together. He says he's heard it's a "scary game" and he doesn't do scary games, so he's insisted that I have to be the one playing. [lol] But we've been too busy getting through the Arkham games to start on it yet. Soon, though!

What are your impressions of the games you've started so far?

Elirona 07-09-2014 12:03 AM

Oh, pshaw! Bioshock infinite isn't scary at all! The first two games are scarier. [lol] There's really only one scary part in Bioshock Infinite, but if I told you, I would be spoiling the plot! so, I shall remain quiet. [ninja]

Cherry Who? 07-09-2014 12:08 AM

Yeah, nothing I've seen around the nets suggests it's scary, but idk, my boyfriend's a baby. [lol]
