"It did," the Doctor replied, grabbing the other watch and walking out into the hall. "Jack?"
Marie jumped slightly when Jack called up the stairs. "The Doctor?" she asked quietly, her eyes a bit wide. It had been a long time since she and Jess had been little girls, but everyone had heard of the Doctor, even then. |
"You might want to come see this," Jack said, looking at Marie. He could definitely tell she was different now, and she'd reacted to the Doctor, which meant she remembered.
"Doing okay so far?" |
"Coming," the Doctor said, making his way down the stairs.
"I think so," Marie said, sitting down again. She blinked a little, dizzy. "A bit lightheaded." "There's more oxygen in this atmosphere than there was on Gallifrey," the Doctor said as he reached them. "You'll get used to it." |
Jack looked between the two before he shook his head. "Well, you could have done worse," he told the Doctor with a grin. "I hope you're not going to strand me here this time now that you've got others."
|
"As if it's possible to strand you anywhere," the Doctor retorted. He handed Marie the other pocket watch. Marie took it, a bit confused, and looked at it.
"This isn't mine," she said. "I know," he replied. "Just open it." Marie looked at him for a moment, and then popped open the watch, releasing the golden energy inside. |
This time the energy hit Jess and she gasped and had to sit on the staircase while she readjusted. As if things weren't odd enough.
"Well, I bet that's better, or will be in a few minutes," Jack said cheerfully. "That's going to take a bit of getting used to," Jess muttered, rubbing her forehead. |
"Jess?" Marie called cautiously up the stairs. She still had the pocket watch in her hands, and clicked it closed. Then, carefully, she pressed a hand to the left side of her chest, then the right. "Yeah, two hearts, okay, not just one anymore..."
The Doctor watched her, and went over to stand with Jack. "They're both Gallifreyan," he said quietly. |
"How did they manage that?" Jack asked, looking at them before focusing on the Doctor. "They seemed pretty human."
Jess took a few moments before making her way down the stairs again. "Yeah, two hearts, a lot more memories, all that stuff," she muttered. "You good, Marie?" |
"Survival trick," the Doctor replied. "They essentially locked themselves away, became human for all intents and purposes."
"I think I'm good," Marie replied. "This atmosphere is weird though, how did we not notice that?" |
"Huh. Okay. Neat trick. But now they're back to whatever constitutes normal for Time Lords." Jack looked at them both.
"We were human, that's how we didn't notice it," Jess replied, though she sounded a bit off. "And adjustment headache, dear god, why did anyone ever think this was a good idea?" |
"Exactly," the Doctor said, turning to watch the girls. Three wasn't exactly an entire race, but he wasn't alone anymore, either.
"There's entirely too much oxygen in this air, I feel like I could get high off of it," Marie said, massaging her forehead a bit. "Honestly, how much oxygen do these humans really need?" |
"Too much," Jess said. "We lived on this for years, you know, we should be used to it." She grumbled a bit to herself as she readjusted, both hearts beating steadily.
|
"It must be because they've only got one heart," Marie said. "Two means twice the oxygen." She put both hands on her chest, just feeling her heartbeats. "How did we handle only one? That can't be good for anyone."
|
"We were human and humans do well enough," Jess said. "For humans anyway. I mean they don't live as long as we do but they don't regenerate either." She shook herself a bit and made it the rest of the way down the stairs, going to get a drink.
|
"Well good for them," Marie said, following Jess into the kitchen. "We must be across the universe from Gallifrey, how are we going to get home?"
|
Jess froze at that and looked back at the Doctor. "Remember what he said earlier?" she asked, her voice very quiet. "That it was impossible that other Time Lords were here."
|
That made Marie freeze as well, and she glanced back at the Doctor.
"That can't be," she said quietly. "It was a whole planet. It can't be gone. Gallifrey has to be there." |
"But there was the war," Jess said quietly. "Remember? That's why our parents had us leave, so we could get away from the war, from what was happening..."
|
"It was just a war," Marie said, a bit desperately. "This planet has wars all the time, there's never a time this planet doesn't have a war going on somewhere." She sat down at the table, a bit helplessly. "Our home can't be gone."
|
Jess shook her head and leaned back against the counter, blinking quickly. "So what do we do now?" If they couldn't go back to Gallifrey, she didn't think she wanted to stay and pretend to be a normal human.
Jack nudged the Doctor pointedly, looking at the girls. |
"I don't know," Marie said. "It's not like this planet has reached any further than its own moon yet..."
The Doctor rolled his eyes a bit, and cleared his throat. "Actually," he said, grabbing their attention, "I have a Tardis." |
"...You have a Tardis." Jess was quiet for a moment before she let out a little laugh that wasn't quite hysterical. "Oh, well, he's got a Tardis."
Jack very nearly face-palmed. "He could use help piloting it, he's terrible at it, it shakes all over the place and dumps us on our asses," he said, not so subtly. |
"Of course it does," Marie said, also slightly hysterical. "Why wouldn't it? It's made for six pilots."
"I do well enough," the Doctor said, a bit defensively. |
"Yes, you get us from place to place, but you also overshot by a year last time," Jack pointed out. "And missed by a continent three trips back."
Jess shook her head, looking at the two of them. "So now we can just go off gallivanting with the Doctor in his Tardis, is that it?" |
"Why not?" the Doctor asked. "See the rest of the universe, all of time and space..." He grinned. "Proper atmosphere."
"You speak as if it's that simple," Marie said. "It is," the Doctor replied. "Come with me in the Tardis, it'll be fine." |
