Iceland's biggest volcano may be erupting soon-OVER-
So, one of our biggest volcanos is threatening to erupt. Here is a link to the BBC news article as it's in English.
BBC News - Iceland raises Bardarbunga volcano alert to orange The threat level is still currently at orange, which means that airtraffic should have its eyes open and be on high alert. As I have now just read people have been evacuated around the area of "Bardarbunga" and earthquakes are getting more and more. Alert: Area North of Bįršarbunga Volcano Evacuated | Iceland Review Here is another link to the news in English. There is no telling what kind of damage this volcano may cause but the ash will most likely be immense. I just thought I'd share this information with you guys. This is no joke. |
Awww. I don't have cable. As scary as this is it's also really exciting!
|
Is this volcano bigger than the one that caused all those problems a couple of years back then? That's scary. D:
|
Do you think the ash will reach the us?
jelly which one has gone off recently? |
Another with an equally long and hard to pronounce Icelandic name. [sweat] The ash from that one caused big disruption to UK air traffic, and impacted on our weather, so I can't imagine the kind of problems it created in Iceland itself, and this volcano being just as big, or maybe bigger... D:
|
ah... right... Iceland and their volcano names........
hopefully it doesn't go off then o.o |
Oh dear, and that it is bigger than that one before is worrisome. Back then air traffic had come to a standstill in many areas. Are you in a safe place darling?
|
Wow, how exciting! Though, I'd be terrified if I lived in that area. Having to leave everything behind would be pretty butt. :C
|
Can we get an update on what is happening over there? How are you doing darling? Are you near enough to it that you have to leave or are you safe?
|
you mean eyjafjallajokull? i've been somewhat keeping up on the news about the giant caldera, and it's interesting enough, but so far (just sayin'...) every prediction about the end of the world has been wrong. so let's call it guarded observation on my part.
|
lol, oh I don't think it is the end of the world... just a possible death sentence for those too close or in plane flying where the ash cloud that develops might drift to...

Anyways, this seems to be the latest news on the volcano; Latest on Bįršarbunga Volcano | Iceland Review |
That does look hard to say...
|
Wow, thanks for the link!
|
i remember living in alaska for a couple fun volcanic eruptions. airports shut down because of the eruption, then inches of ash in the streets for what seemed like weeks. we didn't have anything nearly as cataclysmic as the icelandic calderas though. it's different being in a place now that has somewhat underwhelming geological activity...the slightest tremor and everyone's heading for their basement.

lol, when I lived in South Korea, it was normal to hear North Korea talk and make threats... we shrugged and went on with our lives.
Then family in the States sent me news links from the States about North Korea and how South Korea was doomed. I was astounded. They actually believed N. Korea? It was like a cave man threatening a modern battleship. No comparison. |
I dunno maiden... I hear one of their rockets actually left the ground.
|
Well, yes, it did. But South Korea has anti-missile defense. If it was fired at the main South Korean country, it would be shot out of the sky. If their antique and outdated planes (that they don't have enough fuel to get even half in the air) are sent towards South Korea, then South Korea's modern and continuously patrolled fighters could take them on easily since they are more modern and also have actual daily experience flying.
That leaves artillery. The only artillery target would be Seoul. The rest is too far to be effective before being destroyed. Seoul is filled with Chinese businessmen, and you don't hurt Chinese economy unless you want a horrible enemy at your doorstep. So North Korea dares not hurt relations further with their only ally. And if North Korea did attempt any of these, they have 5-10 minutes before the aggressive military installations carrying these attacks out are wiped out. Which of course is then legitimate cause for South Korea to invade since the cease fire was broken. If they did use Nuclear on South Korea, it is so close that it would wipe the North Koreans out as well. Their antique weapons and attempts at nuclear bombs are no match for ours. Their soldiers, hungry, are no match for the American and South Korean soldiers who are in top physical shape. Their weapons can't penetrate easily. Besides, let's look at history. Those who say, "I'm going to attack and kill you" tend to not act. Those who do, well, they don't announce it. Look at Hitler's wars, Napoleon's wars, Pearl Harbor... generally you don't tell your enemy where you are going to attack because it makes it harder for you. |
[lol] When you put it that way it's actually kind of sad...
|
It is pretty sad. I spent a lot of time wishing that there was a way for improved relations.
If you ask a Korean what they think about a unified Korea, you get one of two responses. Most adults, especially 40 years old and up, are highly in favor of unifying. Many have family on the other side. Then you get the kids and college students. They are not in favor because it would stress the economy and taxes would go up while the North Korean infrastructure and society was upgraded and the people stabilized. The S. Korean government has a whole team of experts who studied the East and West Germany integration. They have used that as a background for the strategies they have come up with for the day that North and South Korea integrate again. |
Update!
My apologies, I keep forgetting I have an account here xD
But Jelly, yes, this one is slightly bigger than Eyjafjallajökull. Now, the ash could very well reach a few countries in Europe. I am a safe distance away, at least 4hr drive away. The update on the volcano is that it's going further North due to a clog in the tunnels, so perhaps, I don't know for sure, perhaps two volcanos may erupt. The BBC news site has some information concerning that. The earthquakes are going towards Askja which is another volcano. Here's a link: BBC News - Iceland examines Bardarbunga volcano 'cauldrons' Here's a link to show you the amount of earthquakes: Whole country - earthquakes during the last 48 hours (Preliminary results) | Earthquakes - all regions | Seismicity | Icelandic Meteorological office We're having earthquakes of magnitude 5.1 - 5.7 which is a lot. Earthquakes are being felt in the North in the city of Akureyri. It's really a matter of time when exactly the volcano or volcanos may erupt. Only time can tell. I will do my utmost best to keep you guys updated! This link here: Bįršarbunga 2 Will give you a LIVE WEBCAM FEED in Bįršarbunga / Bardarbunga. If it does happen to erupt there you can watch it. Don't worry though, there are a lot of scientists examining around there. Also, here is a link to an Icelandic news-site but this is in English so you can all read this. It's news about what's happening in Bardarbunga. Fréttaknippi: Bįršarbunga in English - mbl.is Also on Mila (the site with the live webcam feed) you can watch else where live in Iceland. Be advised that bardarbunga camera is frozen/unresponsive, it doesn't move around like Bardarbunga 2. |
There's an earthquake map I use a lot, and blew my mind when I looked at iceland.
I read 14 quakes in 7 days... Quote:
