"I can imagine," Dani replied, grinning. "I've heard all sorts of stories and rumors."
|
Robin grinned. "You'll just have to wait and find out what's true," he said. "Some of it is probably exaggerated. Some of it isn't."
|
"Now you're just teasing me," Dani protested with a fake pout. "You probably know all the juicy details. You're holding out on me."
|
"Well of course I know all the juicy details," Robin said with a shit-eating grin. "I'm just giving you the chance to meet them first."
|
"That's not fair," Dani replied. "You're being a tease."
|
"I know." Robin grinned and settled there. He was going to be stubborn about this and not tell her anything just yet.
|
Dani huffed, and then rolled her eyes at him. Well. She'd get the information she wanted one way or another, even if it meant trying to go to the source first.
|
Maggie just looked amused as she watched them, cleaning out some glasses during a lull. Working the bar wasn't new to her, and it was kind of fun.
|
Dani checked the time on her phone and made a face.
"I have to go," she said, getting to her feet. "Just about time for me to be at work." Robin had come through with a job for her, and she made sure to always show up for it. It was pretty good money, she had to admit. |
"Have fun," Robin said, grinning at her. "Try not to tease them too much." He winked at her.
|
"No promises," Dani replied, grinning. "Gotta make a living somehow." Then she headed out.
|
A few days later, Maggie was at work again, and so was Cal. It was their first time working together, and Maggie was a little wary of him. Not because he was an Aupheling, but because he was almost as stubborn as she was and would not be easy to bully.
Nik had been dragged along and had claimed a table for himself, since Cal had insisted he get out of the apartment. |
Cal was also side-eyeing Maggie a bit. He still had no idea who she was, really, and she'd literally come out of nowhere while he and Niko were gone. Not that he wasn't confident he could take her in a fight; he just wasn't sure what to make of her yet.
"I don't get why Ish put us both on," he grumbled. "I can handle things fine." Dani was also hanging around. It was a day off, for her, and she wanted to see what Maggie would do and be there if Maggie needed a distraction. |
Maggie rolled her eyes. "Yeah, but you're bad for business," she pointed out, serving another Wolf. "You're almost as likely to shoot someone as serve them drinks."
Nik found his attention wandering and focusing briefly on the girl he'd seen with Robin. He still didn't know much about her, but she clearly wasn't human, or not all human, and Robin seemed to like her. Which didn't narrow things down much. |
"Hey, they shouldn't start fights they can't finish," Cal pointed out as he sent a Look at another pair of Wolves.
Dani noticed Niko looking at her and grinned at him. She tried to turn down the flirtation in the grin, but she couldn't get rid of all of it. |
"Except someone asking for a beer is not trying to start a fight," Maggie pointed out, grabbing a few glasses to clean. "You think everyone is out to start a fight."
Nik nodded to acknowledge her before his gaze moved on again. That grin had been nice enough, kind of cute, and he had no right thinking things like that, none at all. So he wasn't going to think about her or look at her again, if he could avoid it. Because he wasn't in a mood for socializing, and he wasn't one for casual relationships, and that grin kind of made him want one or the other. |
"I haven't shot anyone just asking for a beer," Cal protested. "That last one was because it tried to bite me when I handed over the bottle."
Dani studied him for a moment before grabbing her drink and moving over to his table. "Hey," she greeted, grinning at him again. She wasn't actively trying to flirt, so she tried to keep it to a minimum. "This seat taken?" |
"So you say," Maggie pointed out. "They also have way too many goddamn teeth, period."
Nik shook his head, motioning for her to sit. He wasn't going to turn her away, but he wasn't going to encourage her, either. |
"No kidding," Cal muttered. But they weren't the worst teeth he'd seen, not by a long shot.
"So, which brother are you?" Dani asked, taking a sip of her water. "My name's Dani, by the way. Short for Danielle." |
Maggie slid him a bit of a look when he agreed with her but didn't actually protest that, instead making herself a Coke. "So, I heard you were off hunting before you got back."
"Niko," he said, looking at her before glancing back at Cal to be sure he wasn't getting into trouble. |
"What of it?" Cal asked, glancing at her.
Dani nodded. She'd been able to get a little bit of basic information on the brothers, so she knew who Niko was, somewhat. "You two have a hell of a reputation out there," she commented. |
"Nothing. Just curious. Done a bit of hunting myself, although I don't usually get paid for it." Maggie shrugged.
Niko nodded. "It took a while," he said mildly. And the reputation got them jobs, so it was worth it. |
Cal shrugged. Hey, he couldn't complain about his other job. It paid, most of the time, and it was great stress relief.
"It's impressive," Dani said. "I know most of the paien world has heard of you both." |
Maggie snorted after a moment and shook her head, fixing another drink for a lamia and sending it across the bar top. She even got a tip.
"I suspect Robin had a hand in that," Nik said with a little shrug. |
"Probably," Dani agreed easily. "He seems to have a hand in everything, it's really very useful sometimes." She grinned a bit.
