Dani blinked.
"They leave each other alone without a fuss, most of the time," she pointed out. |
"Indeed." And that did make things interesting and narrow down the scope of what she could be quite a bit.
Dani studied him for a moment before grinning.
"What, did it finally pique your interest?" she teased a bit. |
Niko shrugged. "Simply curious," he said. But he would do a bit of research later, maybe.
"You could just ask," Dani offered with a slightly flirtatious grin. "Promise I won't bite unless you ask."
Niko flinched, very slightly, at that and looked away. Clearly any reminder of Promise was still painful. "I see."
Dani's grin vanished when she saw the flinch.
"What did I say?" she asked. Clearly, she'd inadvertently pushed the wrong buttons. |
"Nothing intentional." Niko shook his head. "I need to go." He didn't even bother with an excuse, just getting up. He knew Cal would have to stay, but that was fine.
"Okay." Dani couldn't make him stay, after all, although she did feel bad about upsetting him. She had no idea how she'd managed to do so, but it was obvious that she had.
Cal noticed his brother's abrupt change of mood. "Cyrano?" he asked carefully. |
"I'll see you back at the apartment," Nik told Cal. With silent instructions to finish his shift because Nik didn't want company right then.
Cal watched him for a moment, then nodded.
"See you later, then," he agreed. "Be careful, Nik." |
Nik just nodded and headed out of the bar, walking quickly.
Maggie raised her eyebrows but didn't ask Cal. Instead, she looked at Dani. |
Dani just raised her hands a little in a 'I didn't do it' gesture. She had no idea what had set him off.
Maggie shrugged and made her a drink, walking it over to her.
"You good?" she asked, just to be sure. |
"Doing fine," Dani said. "Was chatting with that guy until he suddenly left. I have no idea what I said to make that happen."
"Dunno. He didn't exactly look friendly to start with." Maggie shrugged. "No skin off your teeth, just let it go."
"Yeah, you're right," Dani said. She shrugged a bit. "No real loss, I guess. He was kind of pretty, though."
Maggie snorted. "There are other pretty men," she said. "Go flirt with one of them."
"Eh, I don't feel like it tonight," Dani replied. "I wasn't flirting before. Or I wasn't trying to, anyways."
Maggie rolled her eyes. "You're always flirting, whether you mean to be or not," she pointed out.
"I do try not to," Dani protested. "It just doesn't always work." She gave a bit of a mock pout.
Maggie snickered. "Yeah, I'm sure you're real upset about that." She rolled her eyes, although she was teasing.
"It's still not my fault," Dani said. She shrugged a bit. "Either way, yeah, I'm still good here for now."
"Alright, let me know." Maggie headed back behind the bar to finish out her shift.
"I will," Dani said. She waved a hand. "Have fun. Don't stab your co-worker yet."
