"Fine," Lydia replied, her voice trembling a little. She was shaken enough that she didn't even try to catch the ruby that clattered to the floor as she turned towards him.
As soon as everything started, Jefferson was running into town. He knew Mai and Grace were still out, and he needed to find them and make sure they were okay. He dodged a few flying monkeys and jumped a few holes in the ground as he got into the middle of town and started to search. "Grace!" he shouted. "Grace where are you? Mai!" |
"Not hurt?" Hook looked her over quickly, and then pulled her closer as a little rumble shook the building. Nothing else fell but some dust, but he wasn't about to take any chances.
"Papa!" Grace called, running over to the nearest semi-clear area and looking around for him. "Papa!" She would have gone running, but she didn't want to leave Mai. |
"Fine," Lydia said again, letting him pull her closer. She jumped and pressed closer on her own when some more pieces of ceiling fell. "You?" The pearl and diamond from her words bounced off into the rubble.
"Grace!" Jefferson rushed to where he heard her. "There you are! Are you alright? Did you get hurt?" |
"I'm fine, love." Hook looked around. "But I don't think we'll be going anywhere for a while." He grimaced a little at that. He did not enjoy being stuck.
"No, I'm fine." Grace hugged him tightly for a few moments, just breathing past the panic and the sudden tears that threatened to appear. "But Mai--" She pulled back a bit and looked up at him. |
Lydia made a small noise at that and looked around. He was right, they were pretty well boxed in for the moment.
Jefferson held Grace tightly, comforting her. "It'll be alright," he said. "Where's Mai?" |
"At least there's still a chair," Hook said after a moment, moving over to brush some dust and bits of rubble off the chair. He motioned for her to sit.
Grace took a deep, shuddering breath. "In there," she said quietly. "Come on." She took his hand, walking back in carefully to where Mai was. She hadn't moved, mostly because there was rubble on her legs and she was fairly certain she couldn't move. |
Lydia nodded and cautiously sat down. After a moment, she sighed and tugged the hem of her shirt down to her lap to catch anything that would fall.
"So now what?" she asked. "Mai?" Jefferson called when he didn't immediately see her. "Are you alright?" |
"We wait, I suppose. I could take a look around, see if there's any way out." Hook smiled, but it was a little grim. "Hope you're not claustrophobic, love."
"Here," Mai croaked, moving her head enough to look at him. Grace moved back over to her carefully, crouching down next to her. |
Lydia shook her head and waved a hand at him, signalling him to go right ahead. She would be fine for a little while.
"Mai!" Jefferson knelt down next to her. "Where are you hurt?" He glanced around, and saw her legs pinned. "Hold still, I'm going to try to get this off of you." |
Hook nodded and started looking around, moving around the room and examining the fallen bits of building. When he came back, he looked rather grim.
"Well, I don't think we'll be getting out on our own." Mai stayed very still and as quiet as she could, but she still gasped when he moved things off her. |
"Lovely," Lydia responded, making a face and catching the gray pearl that fell into her lap.
It took some careful maneuvering, but Jefferson was able to get the rubble off of Mai. "Can you move?" he asked once he'd gotten her free. |
Hook chuckled a little at that. "Yes, quite."
Mai tried, gasped, and closed her eyes. "Nope," she said, her voice cheerful but clearly strained. "Not happening right now." |
"So now what?" Lydia asked, making herself comfortable in the chair. "We just wait here for a while?" Stones and flowers began to gather in her lap.
"Easy, easy," Jefferson said, kneeling down next to her. "Alright, we'll figure this out. Can you handle it if I pick you up? We need to get somewhere safer." |
"Far as I can tell, that's all we can do," Hook said with a little shrug. "At least we've still got light."
Mai considered that for a few moments. "Go slow," she told him. "I'll try to stay quiet." It wasn't quite an assurance that she'd be okay, but she knew they had to go somewhere, so she'd just deal with it. |
"Wonderful," Lydia murmured. "Kind of makes me wish I had some magic right about now, instead of just a curse." She gathered up the flowers in her lap, setting them off to the side. The precious stones all clattered quietly against one another as they shifted.
"I'll be careful," Jefferson promised. "Here, put your arms around my neck..." He gathered her up as gently as he could, going slow so as not to hurt her more. |
"That would be too convenient," Hook told her, looking around the room again. "I could probably move things around some with two hands, but, well..." He shrugged expressively.
Mai held on to him, closing her eyes tightly and staying quiet. She did whine faintly once he was carrying her, though. |
"Right," Lydia sighed. She absently rolled a pinkish pearl between her fingers.
"It's alright," Jefferson soothed. "We're going to get you some help." He tilted his head at Grace for her to stay close, and then ventured out of their little alcove. |
Hook settled in himself, rolling another pearl over that had escaped and plopping it onto the pile growing in her lap.
Mai nodded, keeping her eyes closed. Grace stuck close to them, although she did point out the little medical area that had sprung up. Since the hospital wasn't all in one piece. |
Lydia grinned and tossed another pearl at him. Then she picked a daisy out of her lap and wrapped the stem around itself, popping the head off and flinging it at him.
Jefferson held Mai gently, talking as smoothly as he could towards the triage area that Grace had pointed out. "Hello?" he called when he got her there. "We need help here!" |
Hook snorted and caught the pearl. The flower hit him in the face, and he mock-scowled at her. And threw it back.
"Oh, goodness," one of the nuns fretted. "Put her over here." She cleared off a space, already looking Mai over. Mai, however, refused to let go of Jefferson's shirt. |
Lydia couldn't help but giggle a bit, and picked up another daisy. Taking aim, she popped the head off the daisy at him. Hey, it was harmless.
Jefferson set Mai down as gently as he could. "She was hurt in a building collapse," he said to the nun. He didn't try to make Mai let go, his hand going to hers. |
Hook snorted at her and threw it back with a grin. Okay, yes, this was harmless, and actually rather fun if he was being honest.
The nun nodded, starting to look her over briskly. "Well, her life isn't in danger," she said with forced cheer. "But her leg is broken, and I can't tell if her ribs are broken or just cracked." |
Lydia grinned. She was tempted to find out which words tended to create daisies, just so she had more to fling at him. Instead, though, she sifted through the small pool of gems in her lap. There had to be one that he would like.
"Do what you can, for now," Jefferson said. "Have you heard anything about what happened out there?" |
Hook blinked when she did that and settled back to watch her, curious to see what she'd do next.
But if she threw something hard at his head, he reserved the right to throw it back. The nun shook her head. "No, I've been too busy." She absently shooed him to one side so she could work. |
Lydia sifted through the stones a bit more, before sorting out a pair of dark gray pearls. Yes, these seemed like something that would fit Hook. She examined them quickly for any sort of flaws (not that they would be any, since the pearls were made by magic) and then held them out to him.
"Nobody who's come in here has said anything?" Jefferson asked, moving to one side without letting go of Mai. "That can't be true. I have no idea what caused it, but I can still tell you that the town is a wreck." |
