Bucky blinked.
"What?" he asked. Because it just wasn't decent to touch a dame like she was asking. |
"Never mind, you can pay me back later," Alissa said, waving a hand negligently. "Steve got all up in arms that no one had given Taylor flowers." She couldn't help but grin at that.
Bucky snickered at that.
"Yeah, sounds like Stevie," he said, nodding. "I'm surprised, though, never seen him get ruffled over that in particular before." |
"Maybe he likes her," Alissa said. "He was asking when her birthday was, and making tentative plans to find her in our proper time, and bring her flowers. It was kind of cute, really."
"Aww, how sweet," Bucky agreed, grinning. Then he paused. "You think we'll still be around in seventy or so years?"
"Yes," Alissa said with certainty. "You will be." And that was something to both look forward to and dread.
"Good to know," Bucky said, that easy grin back on his face. "Though I doubt a coupla pretty dames like you would want to see old men like us seventy years down the line."
Alissa blushed a bit because damn that grin. "Oh, I don't know," she said with a little shrug, trying to will her blush away. "Never know what might happen."
"Says the girl from the future," Bucky replied, a bit teasingly.
Alissa snorted. "Doesn't mean I know everything," she pointed out. "Besides, wouldn't want to ruin the surprise for you."
"I'm not one for surprises, to be honest," Bucky admitted. "Trust me, I get enough excitement dragging him out of scraps, I don't need any more." He tilted his head a bit to indicate Steve.
Alissa chuckled quietly. "Yeah, I bet. And now you've signed up to watch his back in even more scraps. Sure you were thinking that one through?" she teased.
"Hey, can't let him go without someone to watch his back," Bucky pointed out. "And I've been doing it for years already, so why not? Besides, he followed me into the Army, not the other way around."
"True," Alissa said. "Still, I expect there will be times you want to strangle him."
Bucky laughed.
"All the time," he agreed. "Ever since we were kids." |
Alissa snickered. "That's the best kind of friend, the kind you occasionally feel like pummeling," she said with a shit-eating grin.
"No kidding," Bucky replied, returning the grin. "Do women have friends like that?"
"Oh definitely. I've had a few in my time," Alissa said with a shrug. "Although I think Taylor feels that way about me more often than I about her. I've been told, many times, that I can be very difficult."
Bucky grinned at that.
"Then she'll be able to handle Steve just fine," he said. |
"I figured. Besides, she'll get some practice now, when he isn't off saving the world." Alissa rolled her eyes, though she was grinning.
"The world, huh?" Bucky asked. "When'd it get upgraded from just the country?"
"Well, you know, Nazis are a threat, and it's not like he's just fighting for the country, you guys have a Brit and a Frenchman on your team, after all," Alissa pointed out. Which was all absolutely true.
"Somehow, that's not what it sounded like you said," Bucky pointed out, raising an eyebrow slightly.
Alissa shrugged. "Take it how you want," she said. "Anyway, shouldn't you go get food too before the rest of the army eats it all?"
"As soon as Steve and your friend are here," Bucky said. He grinned. "Can't have the other guys tempted to move in, now can we?"
