I don't know who's been feeding you that, but conventions are not supposed to be cheap. They do have cheaper options for those who're not there for certain events in their itinerary, but generally, some US conventions can charge up to a thousand over dollars for some of their events. For a convention the size of Comic Fiesta and the location, it's already considered super cheap. [lol]
Also, it depends on the convention itself. If they have super good sponsors, all the power to them. I believe the first year for AFA had free entrance, but that's partly because their main sponsor was AFA Japan.
