It's because it gives them more day light during the peek farming seasons that they need
Farmers work from sunrise to sunset often times. They're very hard workers, and more daylight is better time-wise, I guess. It's still the same amount of day, just set at different times. Maybe it helps them do more in the middle of the day.

i haven't heard it happening before... and yes it does sound weird when the whole country has to wake up on an imagined one hour delay or forward time just so the farmers would know they are not alone hehehe

Just for the record, the United States is not the only ones that have daylight savings time

I also just researched it and it shows up in agrarian (agricultural) societies and not industrial societies. It only happens in regions further from the equator, because that's where the daylight duration difference is more extreme for different seasons. What it does is allow there to be more daylight in the evening rather than the mornings, so that you can get more accomplished after work-hours. Also when it arose it was believed that it would help save energy, because it was mean less energy use at night before people went to sleep.

All of the blue is regions that use Daylight savings time, and the orange is where they used to use it. Red has never used it.

I grew up thinking daylight savings had to do with farming, but it actually doesn't. The wiki page about it is pretty interesting.

Chex, I believe that's because it only shows up in agricultural societies. That certainly makes one believe that is why.

I always heard it was something about candles, which made no sense at all since you'd only light candles when it got dark out anyway. Giving the wiki a read sounds like a good idea. [lol]

Are there any societies that aren't at least partially agrarian? I mean, everyone has to grow food.

There are many areas where they don't really use agriculture, or simply can't. Many societies barter for their food goods. A huge trade item is rice.

Kinda ironic though, because the wiki repeatedly says that farmers mostly hate it.

It seems like the wiki is saying the people who use daylight savings are those located at a middle grounds between the poles and equator, and who have standard work shifts like 9-5, and that farmers tend to oppose it.

lol Yeah, it does.
I should ask the farmers back home about it when I visit next.

I reckon it's because farmers tend to try to get most of their work done in the early hours, because they want to do it before it gets too hot. I'm not sure why otherwise

It still seems like an outdated concept since most of the world seems to function just fine without it. And it really is only an hour. :S

I'll have to ask some of my farmer friends what they think also. [lol]

At this point, I'm used to how things are and it's not really that big of a deal for me. But it still seems silly and unnecessary to me.

They've done research on it and people that use it actually like it.

There are even places in America that don't use it; I know Arizona doesn't for one.
