Gemma blinked.
"I've read enough robot apocalypse fiction to know that was probably not a good idea," she said, grinning a bit. |
"Well, Jarvis rides herd on them, and Jarvis is loyal to Tony, so as long as we all stay on Jarvis' good side, we're safe," Steve said with a grin.
|
"Oh yes, put the master computer in charge of the robots, that never ends badly in the movies," Gemma teased, grinning back. "Didn't you ever see I, Robot?"
|
"Jarvis thinks of himself as benevolent," Steve said with a grin. "But he's not above zapping Tony when he needs to get out of the workshop. Besides, if he took over the world, he'd be Skynet, he's even said so."
|
Gemma couldn't help snickering.
"That must be a trip," she said |
"No kidding." Steve shook his head. "You'll meet Jarvis when you come to the tower, and then you'll see."
|
Gemma blinked.
"When I come to the tower?" she asked. "When am I going to the tower?" |
"I'm not sure yet," Steve admitted. "I'm trying to give Buck some time, see if he'll ask Kenzie. If he doesn't within the next week or so, though, I'll just make a date with you to take you."
|
That startled her.
"A date?" she asked, her eyes going a bit wide and her cheeks a little pink. "With me?" |
Steve almost cursed himself for his wording, but she didn't actually seem opposed, just surprised.
"Yeah," he said after a moment. "I mean, if that's okay." |
Gemma's cheeks stayed pink.
"I--I mean--That sounds great," she said. "I'd love to." |
Steve smiled slowly. "Good," he said. Then he paused and glanced over at the door when he heard Kenzie and Bucky approaching.
Kenzie was still quite relaxed as she let herself and Bucky into the shop. "Good afternoon, Captain," she said to Steve. "Ma'am." Steve nodded to her with a very faint smirk. Kenzie snorted at him, a little steam wafting from her in her amusement. |
Gemma glanced over, as well, her expression evening out a bit when she saw them. She'd gotten used to the fact that she had to share Kenzie, but she still didn't necessarily like it.
"Didn't think you'd still be here, Stevie," Bucky commented. "Unless you moseyed." |
"Don't I always?" Steve drawled with a little smirk.
Kenzie moved over to Gemma, smiling. "We have been invited to the tower," she murmured, wanting to share the news. |
"I heard," Gemma murmured back. "Steve spoiled the surprise, I think." She couldn't help but glance at the two men. "I'm surprised I was invited."
|
Kenzie shrugged. "You're mine," she said, as if it were the most perfectly normal thing in the world. "Of course you were invited. Are you going to come?"
|
Gemma bit her lip a little.
"Not sure," she muttered finally. |
Kenzie blinked at that, startled. She'd expected Gemma to say yes.
"Oh." |
Gemma could see that Kenzie hadn't expected her response.
"I'll think about it," she amended. |
"Alright." Kenzie couldn't push, couldn't ask for anything else, so she simply nodded.
She was quiet for a few moments before she said, completely changing the topic, "I think I ate the last of the meat last night, so I will run to the store. Do you want anything?" |
Gemma saw it for what it was and appreciated the space.
"I'm not sure what I want," she admitted. "Get whatever you feel like." |
Kenzie nodded, grabbing a few of her reusable bags from under the counter. "I'll return shortly, then," she said, glancing at Gemma one last time before she headed for the door.
|
Gemma nodded and settled back in. The others had already left, so she was alone again in the shop. After a moment, she decided to close up a bit early, and headed upstairs to the home part of the building. Lighting a candle she knew Kenzie liked the smell of, she settled onto the couch and got comfortable.
|
Kenzie had picked up enough food for them for a few days, as well as some of Gemma's favorite desserts from the really good bakery a block over. When she saw the shop was closed, she just headed upstairs to their apartment to start on food and settle in.
|
Gemma had ended up dozing off on the couch, a book open in her lap. It was nice just relaxing in the quiet apartment, nice enough that she had drifted off.
