"I think I'll let them have a go first," Steve said with a grin. "Give them bonding time. I'll go next time."
Of course, Kenzie said. Anyone who wants to can come, I can carry everyone. |
Bruce just shook his head a little, and even Tony looked a little wary. Thor, however, looked positively eager as he climbed up onto her back, and Clint was right behind him.
Kenzie was clearly pleased with two to start. No one else volunteered, so she carefully stepped away from the rest of the group before leaping into the air.
"I might have to draw this," Steve muttered, shaking his head a bit. |
"Go ahead," Gemma said, grinning a bit. She nudged him. "She won't mind, I know that. She's vain enough to want to be drawn."
Steve snorted at that but found a good spot to settle down. He knew everyone else would settle as well, eventually, so he just kept part of his attention on keeping track of his team. And Gemma.
Gemma ended up settling in the grass as well, just laying back with a sigh and closing her eyes. It felt good to just relax and ground herself again.
Steve sketched Kenzie flying for a bit, but he ended up sketching more of Gemma lounging in the sun. Fortunately no one else saw his sketch books, because this wasn't the first time he'd sketched her.
Just the first time he had her around to sketch directly from, rather than from memory. |
Natasha noticed what he was doing, however, and could make some pretty educated guesses. She caught his eye and raised an eyebrow at him.
Steve grinned a bit and ducked his head, but he didn't look at all apologetic. He did quirk an eyebrow right back at her, to ask if she was going to say anything.
Natasha moved over and settled next to him.
"You're not fooling anyone," she murmured. "Even Clint is noticing." |
"Clint notices a lot, when he's paying attention," Steve said. "Besides, I'm not trying to fool people." He flipped to a clean page in his notebook.
"You're hopelessly taken with her," Natasha observed as he started a fresh sketch.
"Not hopelessly," Steve said with an uncomfortable little shrug. "No moreso than Bucky is with Kenzie, anyway."
"I doubt James wants anything more with Kenzie than they have already," Natasha pointed out, steadfast. "Besides, it's obvious that you're head over heels for Gemma. We can all see it."
Steve shrugged. "Does it matter?" he asked quietly. "It doesn't change anything for the moment."
"Out here, away from the distractions in the city, it might be a good time to say something," Natasha suggested. "Before someone else does it for you."
Steve was quiet for a few moments. "Maybe," he allowed. "We've still got today and all day tomorrow. We'll see how things go."
"Don't take too long," Natasha advised. "You know how the others can be." By 'others,' she really meant 'Stark,' but she knew he knew who she was talking about.
"I can't see him getting too involved with Gemma," Steve said slowly, although it was clear he wasn't disagreeing with her general statements. "But I won't take too long. Learned my lesson on that already."
"I would hope so," Natasha replied, with a faint smile. "In the meantime, let me see those sketches."
Steve huffed a bit but passed over the sketch book. There were sketches of Gemma, of course, but also one of the team sleeping on Kenzie-dragon, and one of Kenzie-dragon with her head nestled protectively around Bucky.
Natasha couldn't help but smile a little.
"You should join us next time," she said, handing the sketchbook back. "Actually on the dragon instead of on the ground. It was comfortable." |
"We'll see," Steve said with a grin. "If Clint and Thor survive this trip, I might go on the next flight. Can't be worse than the Quinjet back from Paris."
"You should go," Natasha said, nodding just a bit. "You need to loosen up a bit."
"You're one to talk," Steve said with a snort. "I'll go if you go." He grinned, because if she didn't say yes he knew how to nudge her into saying yes.
