"I'm sure they'll be fine," Gemma said. She grinned a bit. "So, how long do you think before someone has to rescue Tony from Caspian?" She paused. "Or Sam, Sam might need the rescuing too."
Steve snickered. "I'll give it an hour or two," he said casually. "Tony will almost definitely need rescuing, Sam is a little more cautious. He might not need rescuing so much as an excuse."
"Sam also isn't as used to dragons," Gemma pointed out. "He's good at rolling with things, but even he's got to have a limit on how much weird he can handle at once."
"Very true," Steve agreed. "He is good at speaking up, so he won't be shy about saying when he needs to escape."
"Think it'll be before or after Tony?" Gemma asked, grinning a bit.
"Hard to say, Tony's gotten pretty used to dragon strangeness from Kenzie," Steve said consideringly.
"But he has a bizarre aversion to kids," Gemma pointed out. "So it could go either way."
"Caspian is more like a teenager, which might make a difference," Steve pointed out. "It's hard to say."
"He really could go either way," Gemma said. She gave a small sigh and cuddled closer to him.
Steve smiled and settled in there with her for now. He'd rescue Sam and Tony a little later.
They ended up not having to look after Caspian for as long as anticipated. The next day, late in the morning, a man about Kenzie's age approached the clearing.
Everyone tensed up when they noticed him, especially Bucky, but the man didn't get too close. He nodded in greeting to Kenzie, and then looked at Caspian. "Caspian," he called, sending the boy a meaningful look. "Time to leave." Caspian sighed. "Yes, Father," he said. |
Kenzie had shifted so she was between Bucky and the other dragon. Sure, they'd left off on perfectly friendly terms, but that didn't always guarantee anything.
"Bring around more often," she said. "It's good to see him doing well." It was a request and subtle praise. |
"Perhaps," the other dragon said, nodding once. "So long as he doesn't run off again first." He shot Caspian a Look.
Kenzie smirked faintly at Caspian's largely unrepentant look. "Go on," she murmured to him. "I'll see you again soon."
Caspian gave her one last hug. Then he turned and followed his father out of the clearing and away from the group.
Kenzie waited until they were both gone before she sighed, the line of her shoulders drooping a bit. Then she turned to the group and flapped her hands at them.
"Go on, go get settled, I promised you all roaming time." Steve snorted at her choice of words there but eyed her a bit worriedly. |
Bucky wasn't so easy to wave off.
"You okay?" he asked quietly, touching her arm. |
"I'm alright," Kenzie assured him quietly. "Just didn't expect him to be leaving so soon." She shrugged.
"You sure?" Bucky asked. He put an arm around her gently. He gave her a teasing grin. "Not gonna go out and have another just to keep around, are you?"
Kenzie snorted. "No," she said, shaking her head. "I enjoy them more when I can have conversations with them and they aren't as messy. Or at least the mess is self-contained."
"Hey, had to ask," Bucky said, grinning a bit. "Wasn't sure if you'd actually have said yes or not."
Kenzie snorted quietly. "I have very little desire to actually keep one," she said, looking at him. "What about you? Any desire for little ones?"
"I used to think about it some, way back," Bucky admitted. "Now... I dunno."
Kenzie nodded. "Not something you have to decide right away, regardless," she murmured.
"Right," Bucky replied. He slipped his arm around her waist and pulled her close to him.
