Rory headed over to the car, getting in and settling in for the ride back to their place, already thinking what she could cook for dinner.
By the time they had gotten home, Vena had gone over every possible reason why the village had seemed familiar, and none of the reasons she'd come up with felt quite right. It was definitely going to bother her until she figured it out.
Rory, on the other hand, had temporarily put the matter out of her mind, and was now focused on food. Because her priorities were quite clear.
Vena followed Rory into the kitchen and began to rummage around in the fridge. Time to put together a salad for herself. She grinned as she pulled out things like kale and tofu and pine nuts and began to build a meal.
Rory made a face at most of it. Kale was good in soup, pine nuts were awesome, but tofu? No. Just no.
"Rubbish," she muttered, putting her chicken in the toaster oven to cook. |
"Healthy," Vena responded, digging in the fridge for some crumbly cheese and a hard-boiled egg. "It's good for you."
"So is chicken," Rory said, shaking her head. "Lots of good protein." She knew she wouldn't win this argument though; neither of them would.
"Tofu has plenty of protein," Vena responded. She drizzled some oil and vinegar on her salad. "And it doesn't kill an animal to make."
"Chickens are dumb anyway," Rory said with a shrug, leaning back against the counter, waiting for her food to finish cooking.
"That isn't permission to eat them," Vena pointed out as she grabbed a bottle of water and a lemon. She sliced the lemon and dropped the slices into the bottle, letting the water sit and turn lemony.
"Sure it is. If they can't figure out to run or fly or whatever, that means I get to eat them." Rory grinned. She rooted around in the fridge for a few moments before she pulled out a beer, popping the cap and taking a swig.
Vena rolled her eyes. This was an old, old argument between them. In between bites of her salad, she set some water to boil for some tea.
Rory was completely unperturbed, and pulled out her food once it was done, letting it cool a little before she ate. At least her table manners were good.
Vena was content to let the silence stretch for a bit.
"There's an archery competition I'm planning to go see in a couple days," she said after a little while. "Feel like coming with me?" |
"Sure," Rory agreed after a few moments. "I'll just watch the competitors." She grinned unrepentantly.
Vena rolled her eyes.
"You're terrible," she said, grinning. |
"Yes I am." Rory grinned. "And yet you keep putting up with me."
"Somehow," Vena replied, teasing. "It's still a mystery."
"I know," Rory said, grinning. "Such a mystery, never to be solved."
Vena snickered.
"Anyways," she said, "yeah, going to the competition. Maybe they'll have an amateur section I can sign up for." |
"I'll cheer for you," Rory said, chuckling. "Unless somehow there's knife throwing, I'll get involved in that."
"We'll have to see what all is going on," Vena said, nodding. She knew Rory liked knife throwing, and was actually pretty good at it. She stretched and yawned a bit. "I think I'm going to head to bed, I'm exhausted after today."
"Go for it, I'll be up a little longer." Rory stretched and settled in with her tea, just relaxing for the moment.
Finishing her tea, Vena headed back into her room. Definitely time to get some sleep.
Sometime in the middle of the night, she sat up in a cold sweat, trying to shake free of a truly vivid nightmare about some sort of battle that was fantastical and somehow way too real for comfort all at the same time. |
Rory at least managed to sleep through the night, but her sleep was uneasy, plagued with dreams both far too vague and too vivid. She dragged herself out of bed the next morning, looking tired still, and uneasy.
