Vena was already up, sitting in the kitchen with a cup of coffee.
"You look about how I feel," she commented quietly when Rory came in. |
Rory grunted, going for her own cup of coffee. She didn't speak until she'd taken a few sips.
"Weird dreams last night," she muttered. |
"Me too," Vena murmured. "Weird. And really vivid." She took a few more sips of her coffee.
"Almost too vivid, almost like those weird nightmares that are really memories, or at least based off memories," Rory said, shaking her head. "But those things... I would remember living through all that."
"You too?" Vena asked. She stared into her coffee. "Mine was... harsh. I would remember anything like that happening."
"Yeah." Rory shivered a little. "It's so strange. It's..." She shook her head. "It's like a memory but I would remember something like that."
Vena nodded in agreement. She took a drink of her coffee.
"It wasn't pleasant," she finally said. |
"Exactly." Rory frowned. "Which is unusual, moreso for you and than for me." She was quiet for a moment. "Kind of odd, isn't it? Both of us having these dreams the same night."
"It's really strange," Vena agreed, nodding. She bit her lip a little. "The dream was really unusual in and of itself, and now you had a similar one? Creepy."
"Right." Rory shook her head. "Something's off about this whole situation. And I want to find out what."
"I don't have the faintest idea of where to even start," Vena replied, finishing off her coffee. "I mean, it's not like I've done anything involving Dungeons and Dragons level stuff recently."
Rory shrugged. "The only thing we did was find that whats-it-called. Shire." Which had been a little strange but she hadn't thought that strange.
The word 'Shire' seemed to nudge something in Vena's mind, but whatever it was was still just out of reach.
"Something about that place seemed..." She trailed off. "I don't know. Familiar." She looked at Rory. "Does that seem crazy?" |
"No," Rory answered slowly. "Not crazy. I... kind of understand what you're saying."
"It was right," Vena pressed. "I want to say it was strange, but it was right. Like that's what that place was supposed to be like since forever."
Rory nodded. "That I get, I got the same feeling. It was like nothing had changed there at all."
"But how do we know that?" Vena asked, a bit distressed. She wrung her hands a bit. "I know for a fact the place is the same, but I have no idea how I know it."
Rory shook her head. "I have no idea," she muttered. "It is very, very strange. I can't explain how I know, I just know."
Vena just shook her head, wrapping her arms around herself.
"I don't like how very few answers we have," she said. |
"But how are we supposed to get more answers?" Rory asked with a shrug. "I mean, the only thing I can think of is going back there, but that probably won't even work."
"Might still be worth a try," Vena mused. "I bet I can remember the way back."
"I would be surprised if you didn't find your way back," Rory said with a snort. "But we were only there a few minutes last time before those people descended. What's to say that won't happen again?"
"Maybe that's what we want," Vena said, thinking. "They're the ones who seemed to know what was going on, right? Maybe they can tell us what's going on."
"Maybe," Rory said, rather doubtfully. She clearly didn't trust them, and she wasn't quite willing to purposefully go get herself caught.
Vena, however, had her mind made up.
"I'm going to do it," she said, setting her mug down and getting up. "I'm going to go find them again and see if I can get some answers. It's going to bother me if I don't." |
