Alfred was greatly enjoying looking at all the exhibits. He couldn't believe he hadn't come here soon. This place was great! When they reached the final exhibit, he stared up at it in awe. It was the most amazing thing here. He almost didn't hear Ivan speak, but the words managed to register in his brain. He beamed at him. "Yes!" he exclaimed, pulling the other closer.
Ivan wrapped one arm around Alfred's shoulders and raised up his phone to take a picture of them. That done, he turned to smile at Alfred. "I'm glad you've enjoyed today so much. Do you want to get lunch in the cafeteria? Maybe ride the space simulator before we go home?" It didn't feel like much time passed, but hours had. It seemed impossible not to spend hours in such a big place and some people could probably take days.
Alfred grinned at the camera, leaning slightly against Ivan. He was surprised by the question about lunch. He hadn't even realized how much time had gone past and he hadn't thought about his stomach once! That was a new record for him. He was extremely psyched about the next question. "Ooh! Can we?" he asked. That sounded like it would be an amazing thing to do and sounded like a better idea than food at that second. But then his stomach let out a loud growl. ".... Food first, then simulator.." he muttered to himself.
Ivan smiled at the expected reaction from Alfred. At least he managed to distract him from food for this long. He lead the way into the cafeteria and eyed the couple options there. Sandwiches, gyros, coffee, sodas, popcorn--the little cafeteria didn't have a lot to offer. But then, this wasn't a main part of the Smithsonian where more would surely be offered. "I'm thinking gyro. Would you like one too?"
Alfred followed Ivan to the cafeteria and looked over the options. He was really disappointed by the lack of burgers. How could a place this great not have that? Just some stupid sandwiches that wouldn't compare. "I don't know what that is... Is it good?" he asked, focusing his eyes on the other.
Ivan shrugged one shoulder. The gyros smelled delicious, but he couldn't say he'd eaten one before. "Well it's..." He found himself struggling for an Alfred-level description of the food. "...basically a Greek taco? Looks like they only come in beef here." A taco probably wouldn't be the best description on terms of taste, but it did look like a taco.
"A taco? Sweet! I love tacos! Let's get that!" Alfred exclaimed. While a taco wasn't as good as a burger, it was still pretty good. Sure, he's never had Greek food before. But it wouldn't be completely awful, right? He pulled Ivan over to the stand selling the gyros and stood in line, ready for something to eat so his stomach would stop growling.
Ivan felt bad for deceiving Alfred, but he did let him think it would taste like a taco. Once they made it to the front of the line, he ordered them a gyro each and picked up a bottle of green tea for himself and let Alfred pick out his soda before paying for it all. "There's a table in the corner. Let's go sit over there, kay?"
Alfred picked out a coke for himself and nodded to Ivan's question about where they should sit. He led the way over to the table and took a seat, sipping at his drink. He was excited to try this Greek taco thing. Though he was sure it wouldn't taste exactly like a real taco. He figured it would probably be close though.
Ivan had the two plates with the gryos and sat them down. "Well, we shall both see what a 'Greek taco' tastes like," he murmured as he picked his up. The pita bread didn't have the same flexibility as a tortilla, but the savory meat smell made his mouth water. After taking a bite, he nodded his head. "It's good!"
Alfred watched Ivan take a bite before picking his own up. He sniffed it slightly and it did smell good. And according to the other, it tasted good. That was a good enough sign to try it. He took a bite and chewed slowly, taking in the flavor. "This doesn't taste like a taco." he said, a bit disappointed though he had suspected this. "I guess it's ok though.." he continued eating it, to hungry to really argue about it.
"Ah well..." Ivan winced a little. "I never exactly said that it would. It's just, sorta like a taco, yes?" Honestly, he thought his liked this more than a taco, but he didn't say that. It was good to branch out your horizons and try new things. "Is it not best to eat things you have no eaten before? It's surprising they have such a food option here."
"I guess..." Alfred said, finishing the food. Sure, it sorta looked like a taco. But the taste wasn't even slightly close. That sucked because now he wanted tacos. "I like the foods I have eaten before. That way I always know what if it's going to taste good or not." he said. He had no problem with foreign food. As long as it was made right. He's had bad food like that before. It wasn't a pleasant experience.
"Knowing can be dreadfully boring. Surprises are fun!" Ivan exclaimed. He loved to give surprises to others and that made him think that he needed to give some soon. It'd been a while since he just randomly gave gifts to anyone and everyone loved that. He didn't so much like getting surprised himself, though he liked to think that he did. "Then besides burgers, what are you favorite foods?" he asked as he finished off the rest of his gyro.
"If you say so." Alfred said. He didn't think surprises where always fun. Surprise parties, those were fun. But there were also bad types of surprises. Like getting suddenly jumped. He had to think for a moment about the question Ivan asked him. What else besides burgers? They were pretty hard to compete with. "Well.. I like tacos and spaghetti... Cakes and candy.. Ooh! And pancakes. My brother makes the best ones in the world."
Ivan tilted his head at that list. There wasn't much he could do with it...maybe. He'd have to think. "That sounds like college student food or a bachelor. A diverse and healthy diet is the key to living a very long time. And since I plan to live many many more years, you should do your best to keep up." A hint of challenge flashed in his eyes before he looked away to find the trash can. "Are you done? I'll throw away your trash as well."
That sounded like a challenge to Alfred. One he was more than capable of doing. "I happen to be in excellent shape, just so you know." he told him. Though he knew he probably should eat more vegetables. He just really didn't want to. They were gross. He'd try though, there were no guarantees on how long that would last. He finished the last bit of his soda. "Yeah, I'm done."
"Yes, I imagine so. You seem very healthy from what parts of you I've seen. But we shall see how long that lasts." Ivan gathered up the trash and whirled away, still with an air of challenge. Once he returned, he offered Alfred a hand to help stand. "So, we were planning on ridding the simulator before we left? Unless your tummy is too full." He didn't know how rowdy the ride might get right after they ate.
Alfred couldn't help but pout slightly at that. He was in excellent shape and he knew it. He took Ivan's hand as he stood. "Of course we're going to ride it! And my stomach is never to full for rides!" He exclaimed. He turned and headed off, in the direction he hoped the simulator was. He was excited to ride it.
Ivan raised an eyebrow, but managed a chuckle. It did seem that Alfred's stomach could take just about anything except vegetables. He yanked on the other's hand to correct his course. "I believe it is that way. Where the line is?" he said as they came up to the simulator that sat near the entrance. Although there was a line, it didn't take long to get through since so many could go on the ride at once. Before long, the two of them were climbing up the ladder into the faux rocket shuttle.
Alfred stumbled slightly when Ivan pulled on his hand to correct him. He regained his footing and kept going in the correct direction as if that was the way he intended to go all along. When they reached the line, he was practically bouncing on his feet in excitement. The excitement grew when they finally boarded the simulator. This was going to be great!
It took a minute for the simulator to fill up and the hatch closed before the program started up. It was a bit kitschy and full of unbelievable asteroid evasion, but the simulator did a good job of fooling you that they were flying. Once the rocket finally landed, Ivan loosened his grip from the railing. As silly as the ride seemed, he found himself grinning and very much amazed with any chance to get near space. "Was it fun?" he asked Alfred.
Alfred went through the entire ride in awe. This was even more amazing than he had thought it would be. He was completely relaxed throughout it, unlike Ivan next to him. "This was amazing! Thanks so much for bringing me here!"He exclaimed. Then, without even thinking about it and still feeling high from the ride, he threw his arms around Ivan's neck and kissed him.
Ivan's eyes went wide, but he relaxed a second later and wrapped both of his arms around Alfred as well. He kissed back despite the close quarters and other people around. "You're the one who picked this place," he whispered back. He did try his best to plan a good date, but a part of him thought it wouldn't go well no matter how hard to tried. He led the way out of the ride after everyone else left and shaded his eyes from the lights. He thought he liked be somewhere close and dark with Alfred better.
"I wouldn't have picked it if you hadn't suggested it." Alfred said. He really had enjoyed this day a lot more than he expected he would. He figured since it was a museum, it would be boring. But it hadn't. He had rode and amazing ride, figured out what he wanted to do with his life, and tried foreign food. Ivan had proven a lot better company that he had been expecting, for a Russian.
