Steve chuckled. "Sounds like you know her, or at least know who she is," he said casually. "It's always nice to have people you know and like at these things."
"That it is," Aria replied, grinning a little. "They're boring otherwise." She looked at him. "I take it you've been to one of these before."
"One or two," Steve said airily. It was true, if you added dozen onto the end of that statement. "I think this one is more fun than the last one I went to, though."
"What happened at the last one?" Aria asked, curious. "Poor planning?"
"A lot of people," Steve said with a shrug. "Everyone had their own agendas, it was just not fun."
"Those are the worst," Aria agreed, nodding. "It's terrible when everyone is plotting against each other somehow."
"Yeah. It's just not fun." Steve shrugged. "But this one is fun, even if everyone is hoping they're dancing with a princess in disguise."
"Well, I'd say their odds aren't great," Aria mused, looking out over the dance floor. She knew there was only one princess out there dancing, at best, since she wasn't dancing, and even then there was only a fifty-fifty chance that her sister was dancing.
"No, I figured not," Steve agreed. "That's okay. As long as I have some decent conversation, I'm happy. I'm not a big dancer anyway."
"A man after my own heart," Aria said, grinning a bit. "Though I'll admit, I like to dance occasionally."
"Depends on the partner," Steve said. "With the right partner, it's fun." He grinned a bit. Sounded like they actually had a bit in common.
"That's true," Aria agreed, grinning a little. "Sounds like you and I have quite a bit in common."
"It does sound like that," Steve agreed with a grin. "I wouldn't mind talking with you again after this, if we ever meet up again."
"I wouldn't mind, either," Aria replied with a small smile. She hesitated for a moment. "I mean, if we ever see each other again, I'd love to take you up on that."
"Right." Steve grinned. "Well, who knows, maybe we'll get lucky."
"Maybe," Aria said. She knew very well that it was very, very unlikely, but she couldn't bring herself to be that kind of downer.
"And there goes my brother," Steve said with an indulgent grin, watching Bucky dance with yet another girl. "He likes dancing much more than I do."
"Well, maybe he'll be able to entice my sister onto the dance floor," Aria said, grinning. "She doesn't dance often."
"I think he's going to try dancing with every girl here before the night is out," Steve said dryly. "Not in a bad way, he just loves dancing."
Aria grinned a bit.
"Ambitious goals," she said. "There are a lot of women here." |
"He doesn't do things by halves," Steve agreed with a grin. "He can be very ambitious when he puts his mind to it."
"Well, we'll see what happens when he gets to my sister," Aria said, grinning. "Should be interesting."
"It should indeed. Where is your sister?" Steve looked around the room as the song ended. He could see Bucky scouting out his next dance partner.
"Over there," Aria said, nodding towards one side.
Bucky was indeed looking for a new dance partner, and he was looking around for a gown he hadn't already taken around the dance floor. |
Elinor was standing back a bit, content to just watch for now. She'd turned away two or three dance partners already; they'd all felt like they were scheming. So for now she'd watch.
"This could be interesting," Steve said, watching Bucky scan the crowd. |
