"She was, yeah," Shay said, nodding. "Indigo lets her play, sometimes. But mostly Ruby stays with Jalia, since she's not as aggressive, and don't try to hold her own against Indy."
"On her own?" Owen blinked, surprised. Because of everyone, Jalia would know better. "That's... surprising."
"Not really," Shay said, blinking. Then it hit her. "Oh, right, okay, you haven't seen her little mismatched herd, have you?"
"No," Owen said, confused. "I haven't seen hers at all yet. I figured once we got back to base I'd bother her for a bit."
"It'll make more sense when you see them, then," Shay said. She paused. "Or less sense, it really depends on what you think you're expecting."
Owen gave her an odd look but didn't actually question her yet. He just shook his head, watching the two raptors go running past again.
Shay rolled her eyes a bit when the two started to wrestle.
"I swear, they're giant puppies," she said. |
"Yeah, they're... calmer than the others, in a way," he said, referring to his previous pack. "They didn't play so much."
"They dialed back the aggression for this clutch," Shay said, nodding. "Indigo is probably the most aggressive of the bunch, even out of all of the females."
Owen nodded. "That makes sense, this was one of the first clutches after the incident, huh? From the beta testing before these were released to the public."
"Yeah," Shay replied, nodding. "First one, actually, and I think they actually used Blue's genetics as a blueprint. I got Indy and Garnet, Jalia got Ruby, and I think Topaz and Emerald ended up somewhere else. They were the most docile, I think they ended up as pets or something."
Owen nodded. "Makes sense," he agreed. "That's not bad, three of them have stayed together." He was quiet for a moment. "They're definitely less aggressive than the raptors I got used to."
"No kidding," Shay replied. "You got the ones that were like 96% pure velociraptor." She grinned a bit, teasing.
"Of course," Owen said with a snort. "Rather than 95% raptor but with the edges smoothed over." He shook his head.
"Hey, no dissing Indigo and Garnet, they're lean, mean, hunting machines," Shay said, grinning. She pointed when Indigo broke away from Garnet to pounce on one of the pigs. "See? Little porkchop never stood a chance."
"If it did, I would have been much more concerned," Owen said, shaking his head. "Come on, let's get back to base. I want to see what all is still intact." And he was planning on exploring more thoroughly, because it looked like all the buildings were still intact.
"Most of the park is," Shay said as she walked away from the viewing glass. "I took a look around when we got here. "There were some pterodons nesting in the visitor center that I had to have Indy and Garnet chase out. The mosasaurus is dead, though, so that's going to need to be taken care of."
"No great shame there, thing was a monster," Owen muttered. "They made that one way bigger than it needed to be." He was quiet for a few moments. "If we open that up the fish'll come in and clean that up for us without a problem."
"We just need to figure out how," Shay pointed out. "They had to make it so the mosasaur didn't escape."
"I remember, I was staff already by then," Owen said. "I'll go take another look at it and see what I can figure out."
"Nab one of the engineers," Shay suggested. "See what they say."
"They're useless, unless you want explosives," Owen said with a grin. "Which I might, so, we'll see."
Shay snickered at that.
"People like them designed the raptor cage," she pointed out. |
"With input," Owen said. "I helped, because they're useless when it comes to actual, live animals."
"Well, credit where it's due, they know enough about living animals to design enclosures for them," Shay pointed out. "Extinct ones, not so much."
