Bucky blinked at the text, but left the gym and headed upstairs.
Maya nodded and got up from the table, one hand gently touching her belly when the little one moved around. She glanced at Steve, waiting for any sort of cue from him. |
Steve went ahead and moved into the living room, setting up the TV and making sure everything was comfortable. And also debating what movie to start with.
Colbie kept half her attention on them, puzzling over the idea of movies. |
Maya followed him, curious. She absently rubbed one side of her belly as she settled on the couch, watching what he was doing with rapt attention.
Bucky came into the kitchen in his workout clothes: loose sweatpants, a tank, and his hair pulled back. His metal arm gleamed. "Hey," he said. "Feel like a workout?" |
Steve settled on a fun movie that really shouldn't have any triggers and was harmless, and settled in to watch the movie with a little grin.
Colbie looked at him for a moment before she nodded. "Alright," she agreed. |
Maya settled as comfortably as she could on the couch, just resting her hands on her belly as she was absorbed into watching the movie. It was cutesy and amusing, and she found that she enjoyed it.
Bucky gestured for her to follow him and then headed back down to the gym. "It's rough without a set routine," he said. "I know. But, I mean, I'm down here most mornings, if you want to join me. Beating up punching bags helps, sometimes." |
Steve grinned when he noticed how absorbed she was. Yeah, they were definitely going to watch more movies. Half way through he did get up and get himself a snack, grabbing one of the pre-made smoothies out of the fridge for her.
"Sometimes?" Colbie glanced at him, frowning a little. |
Maya's attention was only pulled from the movie when there was suddenly a smoothie being held out in front of her. She took it automatically, looking at it for a moment before looking at Steve.
"Thank you," she said softly. She took a tiny sip first, habitually checking it for anything that shouldn't be there, and then took a larger sip when she realized how hungry she was. Bucky glanced at Colbie and then away again. "It's hard," he finally said. "Breaking out. It takes a long time. Might be easier for you, how many times did they put you under?" |
Steve grinned a bit at that and settled in again. He'd check after the movie was over and see if she wanted more, but for now that was good enough.
Colbie was quiet for a few moments. "Don't know for sure," she murmured. "I don't remember. More than four, fewer than a dozen, I think." |
Maya sipped the smoothie steadily, though only a little at a time. She didn't want to risk it coming back up again, not when she really needed to keep everything down she could. She smiled a little when the little baby flutters started up again.
Bucky nodded knowingly. "It'll be rough," he said. "But you'll be okay, I think. You're already better than I was." |
Steve relaxed a bit when she seemed to be enjoying herself and drinking her smoothie. That was all good, and he was definitely happy that she was relaxing around him.
Colbie nodded once. "And those mornings that punching the bags doesn't help?" |
Maya reluctantly set the half-finished smoothie aside when her stomach threatened to show her the first half again. She rubbed her belly with both hands, trying to get both breakfast and the baby to settle properly.
"A live opponent," Bucky admitted as they got into the gym itself. |
"You alright?" Steve asked, frowning a little at her. "You're looking a bit... unsettled again."
That made sense. Colbie nodded and followed him, waiting to see what he wanted to do. |
"I'll be fine," Maya replied, settling back on the couch and still rubbing her belly. "I need to give everything time to settle, and the baby isn't helping." She took a few slow, deep breaths. "It moves around and everything threatens to come back up."
Bucky glanced at her. "Would you rather a punching bag, or a live opponent?" he asked. |
Steve nodded sympathetically. "That sounds rough," he said. "Do you know anything yet? About who the father is?"
Colbie considered for a moment. "Live opponent," she said after a few moments. Punching bags could only do so much for her, after all. |
Maya blinked, and then nodded.
"Of course," she replied. "Only the strongest genetics would have been acceptable for offspring of the program. There was only one possible sire." Bucky nodded and gestured to the open floorspace of the gym. "Whenever you're ready." |
Steve blinked at that, because that wasn't really an answer. "Oh," he said, because that was all he could think of right then.
Colbie moved over into the open space, turning to face him and settling into a sparring mindset easily enough. This, at least, was normal. |
Maya hesitated, and then decided it was okay to elaborate a bit.
"I was taken off of field rotation," she said. "They put me onto the breeding rotation instead. They said it was a mission in and of itself, an attempt to create a child superior to either parent." She looked down at her belly, and then back at Steve. "There were eight of us on the rotation. This child was the only successful conception." Bucky settled into the sparring easily, too. Something about her stance was comfortably familiar, even though he couldn't quite put his finger on how. |
Steve frowned. "Breeding rotation?" he asked. Eight women? That was just... He wanted to find another base to burn down, now, because he'd thought Hydra couldn't get any worse. "Sounds like they've done this before, then."
Sparring with him was challenging, enough so that Colbie felt like she was actually getting a good workout for the first time in weeks. |
Maya nodded.
"They have," she said. "I'm not sure if any before me were successful. But there was only ever one sire in the program." Bucky was enjoying the sparring, as well. Colbie was a surprising challenge, and she wasn't pulling her punches. At least, if she was, she didn't pull her punches like Steve tended to, and she was nowhere near as predictable as Steve was. |
"One sire." Steve was starting to get a really Bad Feeling about this. "The same sire, every time?"
It took longer than Colbie expected for Bucky to pin her down, and she couldn't help but grin a bit as she tapped the mat. "Again?" |
Maya nodded.
"His were the desired genetics," she replied. "As long as you're up to it," Bucky replied as he let her up and offered her a hand. |
"Why him?" Steve leaned forward a bit, starting to feel anxious.
Colbie cracked a grin and took his hand, getting up. "I'm hardly even bruised yet," she said, taking a few steps back from him so they could go again. And then both pairs were interrupted by Jarvis. "If I may interrupt, Doctor Banner has finished with the tests, and has some information he believes you need to hear." |
Maya had been about to answer when she was interrupted by Jarvis. She nodded once, and then carefully got up from the couch. She wanted to know if Banner had learned anything about the baby.
That made Bucky pause, and then he glanced at Colbie. "May as well," he said. |
Steve got up as well, walking with her to the elevators. Partially to keep an eye on her, and partially because he was curious.
Colbie nodded, moving back to the elevators silently. |
Bruce waited until everyone relevant was there before he said anything. It was definitely something that Tony, Bucky, and the girls all needed to hear, and it wasn't going to be anywhere near easy.
"Before I say anything else," he said, "I want you to know I ran these tests eight times, because I was sure the first ones were contaminated somehow. But all of them came back exactly the same, so there's really no way to deny the results." |
